William Marrison★(Edward, Lucy) was born in 1814 in Rotherham,
Yorkshire, England, according to the 1851 UK census, or in 1816, according to
the 1841 UK census. A baptismal record for “Willm.
Morrison” indicated that he was the son of Edward and Lucy Morrison and was
baptized on October 2, 1814 in Rotherham, Yorkshire,
England EN4. Evidence which connects William Marrison
to his parents is lean, and this baptismal record may be the only documented
evidence which included the names of his parents. William’s death record, which
may have recorded his parents’ names, has not been located. The surname
“Marrison” seems to have been unusual in Yorkshire during the eighteenth and
nineteenth centuries, but “Morrison” was more commonplace, and in the baptismal
records of William’s siblings, his father’s surname has been spelled both ways EN4.
Both William and
Edward Marrison were masons; according to the 1841 and 1851 UK census records, William
was a bricklayer, and the death certificate for Edward stated that he also was
a bricklayer. A directory
for Bawtry in the West Riding of Yorkshire which was published in 1837 indicated
that the bricklayers of Bawtry included John Marrison, whose business was on
Church Street, Jonathan Marrison, whose business was on South Parade, and
William Marrison, whose business was on Scott Lane WH19. It is possible that he was related to
one of these individuals or that he was in fact the William Marrison who worked
on Scott Lane in Bawtry. On
August 27, 1838, he married Mary Ann Grey in Harworth,
Nottinghamshire, England EN6, which
is less than two miles away from Serlby, the location
of his father’s death the following year.
The family of
William and Mary Marrison, which included Edward, age fifteen, Charlotte, age
thirteen, Elizabeth, age eleven, John, age nine, George, age seven, and Amelia,
age four, sailed from Liverpool, England on the Emerald Isle and landed
in New York on November 15, 1854 NE17.
They settled in Ashtabula County, Ohio. The 1860 and 1870 US census enumerators
recorded the surname as “Morrison” although in 1870, William was not enumerated
with Mary UN11,
UN12.
William died
sometime before February 6, 1863 when the “Declination of Widow” was filed: “Mary
Marrison Widow of William Marrison late of New Lyme deceased Hereby decline
acting as administratrix upon said Estate and request the appointment of George
Guest as admr [administrator] upon said Estate” OH6. The estate of William Marrison was
exceedingly small. He had a debt for apple trees of $13.85 and another debt of
$4.12 which may have been for logs OH6.
The final line on this account was a payment of $37.07 with a description “Paid
on debt for land” OH6.
His credits included “Price of Yoke of steer sold” for $55.00 and an amount of
$18.94 received as a rate against Alexander Smith OH6. The estate of William Marrison indicated that on February 19,
1863 “The widow declining on her petition George Guest is appointed admor
of the Estate of William Marrison late of New Lyme deceased. Bonds $200 with
George Holcomb and Alfred Marrison sureties filed & accepted _ Letters
issued” OH8. His probate record included a document
dated December 14, 1864 OH6:

Mary Ann
Gray★ was born in 1819 in Harworth,
Nottinghamshire, England according to the 1851 UK census, about 1818 UN12, UN13 or 1820 UN11, or about 1821, according to the 1841 UK
census. Assuming her age was correctly recorded on her death record, she was
born on or about May 18, 1818 in England. Her full name, Mary Ann Gray, was
stated on the death certificate MI5
and the second marriage record MI8
of her son, John Marrison. She might have been the child of John and Charlotte
Gray, who was baptized on August 23, 1818 in Harworth
EN4. John Gray was, according to the 1841 UK
Census, a day laborer born circa 1797 in England with three daughters living
with him: Charlotte, Sarah, and Elizabeth. In 1841, he resided in the Parish of
Harworth in the borough of Bassetlaw,
Nottinghamshire, England. Because this census occurred after the marriage of
Mary and William, and because it was the first census in the United Kingdom,
Mary Gray and her parents did not appear on a census together.
Mary was the mother
of seven children: Edward, born about 1840, Charlotte, born about 1841,
Elizabeth, born about 1843, John, born about 1845, George, born about 1847 or
1848, Amelia, born about 1849 or 1851, and Augustus, born about 1858 UN11, UN12. Note that the names Edward, Charlotte,
Elizabeth, and John were most likely family names. Her first six children were
born in England, but Augustus was born in Ohio.
Edward Marrison may have been the Edward Marrison whose birth was registered in
the last quarter (months October, November, and December) of the year 1839 in Worksop, Nottinghamshire, England EN12. Edward Marrison married Charlotte
Guest on March 23, 1865 in Jefferson Township, Ashtabula County, Ohio OH3. Edward Marrison died as a widower at
age sixty-four years, two months, and twenty-three days on December 10, 1903 in
New Lyme, Ashtabula County, Ohio, and the record of his death stated that he
was born in England OH2.
The stated cause of his death was erysipelas, a bacterial infection of the skin
which produces a rash, but this is not known to be fatal OH2. His age at the time of his death
indicates that his birth occurred on September 17, 1839 OH2.
Charlotte Marrison may
have been the Charlotte Marrison whose birth was registered in the last quarter
(months October, November, and December) of the year 1841 in Worksop, Nottinghamshire, England EN12. Charlotte Marrison married William Labounty
on September 24, 1861 in New Lyme Township, Ashtabula County, Ohio OH3. A deed dated June 28, 1881 for a parcel of land which was part
of Lot Twenty from William LaBounty and his wife,
Charlotte, to Sarah Taylor contained a description of the boundaries which was
quite similar to the same parcel of land owned by Mary
Marrison AS2:
Beginning
on the East line of said lot at the North East corner
part of lands owned by J S Peck. Thence North ¾° East 43.42 chains to the North East corner of said lot. Thence North 89 ¼° West along
the North line of the lot 11.59 chains. Thence South ¼° West 43.42 chains to
the North line of said J S Pecks land Thence South 89
¼° East along said North line 11.57 chains to the place of beginning.
Containing fifty acres of land (The courses given being magnetic.)
At the time of the
1900 US Census, the widowed “Charlott LaBounty” stated that she was born in October 1841 in
England to parents who were born in England, and that she immigrated to America
in 1854 UN14. Charlotte La Bounty died at the
approximate age of seventy-two on March 2, 1913 in Ashtabula, Ashtabula County,
Ohio from “chronic congestion of liver with dropsy”, although the word “liver”
is questionable OH4. Dropsy is another word for edema. Her
death certificate indicated that she was born in England to Charles Marrison,
but her mother’s name was unknown OH4.
Because her father’s name was listed as “Charles”, it is possible that this
Charlotte was not the daughter of William and Mary Marrison, but the
immigration year, 1854, was the same year that William, Mary, and their
children immigrated.
The birth record
for Elizabeth Marrison was
registered in the third quarter (months July, August, and September) of the
year 1843 in Worksop, Nottinghamshire, England EN12. Elizabeth Marrison, the daughter of
William and Mary Marrison, was christened on August 6, 1843 in Harworth, Nottinghamshire, England EN4. Elizabeth “Marison”
married Charles E. Griffin on September 22, 1861 in New Lyme Township,
Ashtabula County, Ohio OH3.
She may have been the Elizabeth Griffin who married Benjamin F. Brown in White
Pigeon, St. Joseph County, Michigan on May 8, 1871; this marriage record stated
that Elizabeth was born in England MI23. If Elizabeth did marry Benjamin Brown, then it is also
possible that she died in 1886, because the death record for “Mrs. B.F. Brown”
stated that she was born in 1844 in Nottinghamshire, England and died at the
age of forty-two in Burlington, Des Moines County, Iowa on December 31, 1886 IO6. A photograph of her gravestone (which
can be located on the Find a Grave
website) was carved with an inscription which read “Mary E wife of B. F. Brown
died Dec 31, 1886 aged 42 years”. The gravestone is situated in Aspen Grove
Cemetery in Burlington, Des Moines County, Iowa.
John Marrison was
born on September 5, 1845 FE1, MI5 in Oldcotes, Nottinghamshire, England FE1. George “Morrison” was born on October 13, 1847 in England to “Wm
Morrison” and Mary Gray MI5. He
may have been the George Marrison
whose birth was registered in the last quarter (months October, November, and
December) of the year 1847 in Worksop,
Nottinghamshire, England EN12. George Marrison, the son of William Marrison and Mary
Gray, married Mrs. Nellie A. (Hutch) Hammond on May 22, 1888 in Ludington,
Mason County, Michigan MI23. His marriage record
indicated that George was born England and had previously been married MI23. He died
at age seventy-five on June 1, 1923 in Eden Township, Mason County, Michigan MI5. His
Mason County, Michigan death certificate indicated that he was born on October
13, 1847 in England to William Marrison (who was born in England) and Mary Gray
(who was born in Bleigh, England) MI21. This was likely an error, as several of
his Marrison relatives were born or lived in Blyth, Nottinghamshire. He died of
stomach cancer at age seventy-five on June 1, 1923 MI21.
The birth of Amelia Marrison was registered in the
last quarter (months October, November, and December) of the year 1850 in Worksop, Nottinghamshire, England EN12. Amelia Marrison married Alpheus W. Carr on July 29, 1876 in Ashtabula County, Ohio OH5. Augustus
Marrison was born about 1858 in Ohio UN11, UN12. According to the 1900 US Census, in which Augustus and his
wife, Nellie, were enumerated in Willoughby, Lake County, Ohio, he was born in
March 1858 in Ohio UN14.
Augustus Marrison and Nellie Wilkinson were married by G.E. Hatch in Cherry
Valley, Ashtabula County, Ohio on August 4, 1879 OH3.
Mary
and Edward Marrison (presumably her son) were granted a tract of sixty-seven
acres which was part of Lot Number Twenty in Township Nine (New Lyme Township),
Ashtabula County, Ohio on June 10, 1865 from Elisha B. Pratt and his wife, Lovina C. Pratt and from Hiram Canfield and his wife Ursula
Z. Canfield for the sum of $480 AS2.
This parcel of land was “formerly owned by Perkins & Osborn” and was
“Subject to the Rights of the owner of a certain Contract for the Sale of Said
premises made the 9th day
of Feb 1858 by and between THC Kingsbury and William Marrison” AS2. This land was divided in half on July 16, 1866 when Mary,
Edward, and Charlotte Marrison granted thirty-three and one-half acres of land
to John Marrison, and in a separate transaction, Mary Marrison also granted a
Quit Claim Deed for a parcel of land of the same size to Edward Marrison for
the sum of $200 AS2. The boundaries of
this parcel to Edward were as follows AS2:
beginning
on the north line of said lot No 20 at the north west corner of lands belonging
to George Guest & also 34 33 ½/100 chains from the north east corner of
said lot Thence N 89 ¼° W 7 chains & 73 ½ links to a stake thence S ¾° W 43 42/100 chains to the north line of
lands owned by J S Peck Thence S 89 ¼° S 7 73 ½/100 chains to the lands of the
said George Guest thence N ¾° E 43 42/100 chains to the place of beginning
& containing thirty three & one half 33 ½ acres of land the courses
given being magnetic To have & to hold said premises with the appurtenances
unto the said Edward Marrison his heirs & assigns forever In Testimony
whereof I have hereunto set my hand & seal this Sixteenth day of July in
the year One Thousand Eight hundred and Sixty six
George
Guest and his wife, Delphi Guest, granted a warranty deed for a parcel of land
which was part of Lot Nineteen in New Lyme to Mary Marrison of the Township of
New Lyme for the sum of $172.20 on May 30, 1868 AS2. The boundaries of this land were as follows AS2:
On
the North by land of Jacob Fisch. On the East by land deeded by Eugene May to
the said George Guest. On the South by a line parallel with the North line and
so far herefrom [the
preceding word is uncertain] on to certain Thirty Four acres and Forty Four
hundredths of an acre 34 44/100 and on the West by the highway on the West line
of said Lot.
The 1870 census
recorded that Mary “Morrison” was the head of the household UN12, but at the time of the 1880 census, she
was listed as a widow, living with her son, Augustus, and his new wife, Nellie UN13. Augustus may have been her youngest
child, as he was two years old in 1860, and she was about forty-two at that
time. The certified copy of her death record, provided by the Probate Division
of the Court of Common Pleas for Ashtabula County, Ohio, stated that Mary Marrison died
as a widow on August 7, 1884 in New Lyme, Ashtabula County, Ohio. She was
sixty-six years, two months, and twenty days old at the time of her death,
which was caused by “Disease of Throat”.
