Thomas Shapley (David, Hepsibah),
the son of David, was baptized on May 3, 1724 at the Putnam Congregational Church
(formerly called North Killingly), located east of the Quinebaug River in
Windham County, Connecticut, by Reverend J. Fisk CO29, LA17, BE5. Thomas was mentioned in the will of his father, dated August 11,
1737, in which he was given “all my second Division of land lying ajoyning to my aforesd first
Division of land at oake Plain so Caled
he paying unto his sister lydia
Shapley three years after he shall arive to ye age of twenty one years
ye sume of
twenty Pounds” CO31. Thomas Shapley married Joanna Utter on
November 9, 1749 at the Congregational Church of Thompson in Thompson, Windham
County, Connecticut BA45, BA5. Thomas Shapley was called Joanna Utter’s
“well beloved Son in Law” and she named him as the
sole executor of her will, dated September 8, 1756 CO31. On February 1, 1757, Thomas and Sarah Bulfinton (their surname may have been Buffington BE5, but each instance
of their written surname in this deed stated “Bulfinton”),
Thomas and Joanna Shapley, Mary Utter, and Ruth Utter, all of “Kellingley in ye County of Windham”
sold four ninths of a parcel of land in Killingly which was eleven and one half
acres “in the Land that was Set of to our Hond Mother
Joanna Utter” to Joseph Brown of Killingly for the sum of eight pounds LA8.
Thomas was a private
in the French and Indian War BA44, BA36.
He was
served in Captain John Carpenter’s militia company in August 1757, but he and
two other men deserted, while
the remainder of the company served for sixteen days BA36. He was admitted as a freeman in Killingly,
Windham County, Connecticut on April 7, 1760 WH13, BE7. Thomas sold 120
acres of land in Killingly to Joseph Town, Jr. on June 5, 1767 for the sum of £80
LA8, and additional land to Consider Jones in 1769 BE5. He was taxed twelve
shillings and four pence in Plainfield, New Hampshire on a rate which was dated
January 16, 1787, which was meant to be paid by March 10, 1787 NE11, BE5. Thomas died before 1804, when in that year Johannah remarried to Thomas Applin,
and he probably died before 1800, because according to the census record, at that time Johannah
was living with Thomas Shapley, Jr., her son.

years old and three females (their age range was not noted).
Johannah Utter (Samuel, Johannah), the daughter of Samuel and Johannah, was born on September 17, 1727 in Killingly,
Windham County, Connecticut WH13.
Joanna Utter, the daughter of Samuell and “Joan”, was
baptized on November 10, 1728 at the Putnam Congregational Church (formerly
called North Killingly) in Windham County, Connecticut by Reverend J. Fisk CO29. In 1750, she joined the Thompson Ecclesiastical Society BE7. Joanna was called the third daughter of Samuel
Utter on December 12, 1754 when she was allotted the remainder of the
fifty-acre lot, the eight-acre lot by the “great pond”, one ninth of the flood
meadow, and ₤52, 17 shillings, and 2 pence in her late father’s personal
estate CO31. Joanna,
the wife of Thomas Shapley, was mentioned in the will of her mother, Joanna
Utter, on September 8, 1756 CO31. Johannah may have had eight children, Jabez,
Sarah, Utter, Mary, Richard, David, Joanna, and Thomas WH13, CO29.
Jabez Shapley, the
son of Thomas and Johannah, was born on November 30,
1750 in Killingly, Windham County, Connecticut WH13. Jabez Shapley, the son of Thomas, was baptized on December 2,
1750 at the Thompson Congregational Church in Thompson, Windham County,
Connecticut CO29. Jabez Shapley signed a petition to the Privy Council of
New Hampshire on September 9, 1786 to request that William Deming be appointed
as a Justice of the Peace for the town of Cornish, New Hampshire, and he signed
a similar petition dated February 5, 1793 which requested that Mr. Nath. Hall
be appointed as a Justice of the Peace for Cornish NE24. Jabez Shapley died at age ninety in
September 1836 in Cornish, Washington County, New Hampshire CH22.
Sarah Shapley, the
son of Thomas and Johannah, was born on April 20,
1752 in Killingly, Windham County, Connecticut WH13. Sarah Shapley, the daughter of Thomas, was baptized on April 26,
1752 at the Thompson Congregational Church in Thompson, Windham County,
Connecticut CO29. Sarah Shapley was
said to have married James Walker US12, EL5, DE20 about
the year 1782 US12, with whom she was
the mother of Rachel Walker, who was born on July 1, 1777 BE7, Nathan Walker, who was born on October 27, 1778 BE7, David Shapley Walker, who was born on August 3, 1781 BE7 and married Lois Scovel BE7, EL5, Samuel Walker BE7, EL5, who was born on August 2, 1783 US12, BE7 in Granville, Washington County, New
York and married Clarissa Evans US12, BE7, James
Walker, Jr. EL5, BE7,
who was born on May 30, 1788 BE7 and

said to have died on March 12, 1818 in Chenango County, New York, and James
Walker was said to have died on June 23, 1841, also in Chenango County US12.
Utter Shapley, the
son of Thomas and Johannah, was born on May 28, 1754
in Killingly, Windham County, Connecticut WH13. Utter
Shapley, the son of Thomas, was baptized on June 9, 1754 at the Thompson
Congregational Church in Thompson, Windham County, Connecticut CO29.
Mary Shapley, the daughter
of Thomas and Johannah, was born on March 9, 1756 in
Killingly, Windham County, Connecticut WH13. Mary
Shapley, the daughter of Thomas, was baptized on January 11, 1756 (this date is
likely inaccurate) at the Thompson Congregational Church in Thompson, Windham
County, Connecticut CO29.
Richard
Shapley, the son of Thomas and Johannah, was
born on March 8, 1758 in Killingly, Windham County, Connecticut WH13. Richard Shapley, the son of Thomas and Hannah, was baptized on
April 22, 1758 at the Thompson Congregational Church in Thompson, Windham
County, Connecticut CO29. It
is possible that he may have married an individual named Mahitable and he was likely the father of Royal Urial
Shapley BE7. Richard Chaply and Utter Chaply were among seventy-one men who signed a petition to
the Vermont legislature to establish a new township called South Granville,
which was filed on June 14, 1782 VE6. Richard
Shipley was enumerated in Granville, Washington County, New York in the 1790 US
Census UN4 Richard was said to have died sometime before 1798 BE7.
David Shapley, the
son of Thomas and Johannah, was born on October 6,
1760 in Killingly, Windham County, Connecticut WH13. David Shapley married
Hannah Padgett, the daughter of John and Hannah Padgett BE5, GA2. His name was David “Shaply” in the 1810 US Census UN6 and David “Shapley” in the 1820 US Census UN7, when in those years he was enumerated in Oxford, Chenango
County, New York. David Shapley of Oxford wrote his will on November 27, 1818,
which named his wife, Hannah, and his children, William, John, Nancy, Hannah, Loranda, and Mary Shapley NE34. This will was proved on July 12, 1827
when on that date David Shapley was called deceased NE34. David died at age sixty-six on June 23, 1827 and was buried on
an “old abandoned plot on Bliss Willoughby”, which was
called the Hovey Farm at the time of the survey of that cemetery in 1930 GA5.
Joanna
Shapley, the daughter of Thomas, was baptized on August 14, 1768 at the
Thompson Congregational Church in Thompson, Windham County, Connecticut CO29.
Thomas
Shapley, the son of Thomas, was baptized on April 14, 1771 at the Thompson
Congregational Church in Thompson, Windham County, Connecticut CO29. The town clerk of Alstead, New Hampshire reported that Thomas
Shapley died of “old age” at age ninety-three years, four months
and fifteen days on August 26, 1861 NE23. This
indicates that Thomas was born about April 11, 1768. This town clerk (Lyman
Chandler) stated that Thomas Shapley was the son of Thompson and Hannah
Shapley, both of England, was born in Thompson, Connecticut and was a tailor
who was single NE23. Thomas Shapley died
intestate in Alstead, Cheshire County, New Hampshire; the Judge of the Probate
of Wills for Cheshire County granted the administration of his estate to
Willard Grant, the husband of Joanna M. Grant, who was called the only child of
Thomas Shapley on September 17, 1861 NE25.
Johannah remarried in Keene, New Hampshire on
February 21, 1804 at about age seventy-seven to Deacon Thomas Applin of Swanzey IN1, WH6, and their wedding ceremony was
officiated by Reverend Aaron Hall WH6. She
died at the age of ninety-four years on
December 5, 1821 in Keene, New Hampshire WH6, BE5, BE7.

Cheshire County, New Hampshire with the family of her son, Thomas Shapley, Jr.

1810 US Census: she probably lived in Putney, Windham County, Vermont with
Thomas Aplin, who was enumerated there with two young
men and one young woman of the age of sixteen but under twenty-six, one man of
twenty-six but younger than forty-five, one woman who was older than forty-five
(probably Johannah), and himself, Thomas Aplin, who was older than forty-five.

1820 US Census: she probably lived in Keene, Cheshire County, New Hampshire with
the family of her son, Thomas Shapley, Jr., who was enumerated with one girl
under the age of ten, one young man between sixteen and twenty-five, one woman
between twenty-six and forty-four, two women older than forty-five, and
himself, Thomas Shapley, who was over the age of forty-five.
