Stephen Coats, Jr. and Polly Narramore
were married by Reverend Solomon Williams in Northampton, Hampshire County,
Massachusetts on March 4, 1799 MA26. This marriage record states “Stephen Coates Junr &
Polly Narramore March 4th” MA26, which
indicates that Stephen was the son of an individual whose name was also Stephen
Coates. According to the age range of the head of the household in the 1810 and
1820 US Census records, Stephen Coats was born between 1766 and 1794, but
because his marriage occurred in 1799, he was probably born about 1779. It is
unclear if he was the Stephen Coats who was enumerated in Charlotte, Chittenden
County, Vermont in the 1830 US Census UN8; Charlotte is
forty-four miles north of Benson, Vermont. Stephen Coats was likely related to (or was perhaps the son of)
Stephen Coats, who himself was the son Charles and Hester (Neal) Coats, but no
evidence links Stephen Coats to Stephen Coats, the son of Charles Coats. Information
about Stephen, the son of Charles, and about Charles and Hester (Neal) Coats
has been provided below.
·
1810 US Census: lived in
Benson, Rutland County, Vermont in a household with four girls under ten, one girl
between ten and fifteen, and one woman and one man (himself) between twenty-six
and forty-four. This places his birth year between 1766 and 1784, a range of
eighteen years. The year in the middle of this range is 1775.
·
1820 US Census: lived in
Benson, Rutland County, Vermont in a household with one girl and two boys under
ten, two young women between ten and fifteen, and one woman and one man
(himself) who was between twenty-six and forty-four. This places his birth year
between 1776 and 1794, a range of eighteen years. The year in the middle of
this range is 1785.
·
1830 US Census: may have lived in Charlotte,
Chittenden County, Vermont in a household with two girls under age five, one
woman between twenty and twenty-nine, one woman between thirty and thirty-nine,
and himself (the head of the household), who was between fifty and fifty-nine.
Polly Narramore was very likely
the mother of the Polly Coats who married Levi Hale. She was the mother of Parmele (possibly Parmelia),
Laura, Lucy, Anna Eliza, Polly, Stephen Jr., Emeline, Cyrus, and Elias VE7, VE12.
Parmele Coats was born on October 1, 1799 to Stephen and Polly
Coats in Northampton, Massachusetts VE7, VE12. Parmelia married Joseph Hale SM2, who may have been related to
Levi Hale. “Parma” Hale was born about 1799 UN10. Joseph and Parma Hale lived in Benson, Rutland
County, Vermont in 1850 with Horace, Polly A., Almira, Allen L., and Lucy Hale UN10. Parmelia Hale, the
wife of Joseph Hale, died at age fifty-nine on January 14, 1859 and was buried
at Carter Street Cemetery VE12. Another death record stated that Parmelia Hale, the
daughter of J. and Lucy Coats, died of typhoid fever on January 21, 1859 at age
fifty-nine VE12. Her gravestone at Carter Street Cemetery in
Benson, Rutland County, Vermont appears to state “PERMELIA Wife of JOSEPH
HALE DIED… 14, 185… 59 yrs” (a photo of
which may be located on the Find a Grave
website). Laura Coats was
born on July 28, 1801 in Benson, Rutland County, Vermont to Stephen and Polly
Coats VE7, VE12. Lucy Coats was born
to Stephen and Polly Coats on March 24, 1804 in Benson, Rutland County, Vermont
VE7, VE12.
Anna Eliza Coats was
born on July 19, 1806 in Benson, Rutland County, Vermont to Stephen and Polly
Coats VE7, VE12. She may have married Oliver Hale, and if so, she lived in
Putnam, Washington County, New York from 1850 to 1870 UN10, UN11, UN12, NE29, NE30. Anna was born about
1802 NE29, 1805 UN10, UN12, or
1807 NE30 in New York UN10, UN12 or
Vermont NE29, NE30. In 1855, Oliver and Anna lived next
door to James and Jane Hale NE29, in
1865, they were neighbors with John and Rebecka Hale NE30, and in 1870, Samuel Hale, a fisherman
of the age of seventy-one, lived next door UN12.
Her name was recorded as “Jane” in 1860 UN11.
Their children were John, James, Hawley, Ambers, Samuel, and Levi UN10, UN11, NE29. Polly
Coats was born to Stephen and Polly Coats on June
26, 1809 in Benson, Rutland County, Vermont VE7, VE12.
Stephen Coats, Jr. was
born to Stephen and Polly Coats on February 29, 1812 in Benson, Rutland County,
Vermont VE7, VE12. He was probably the Stephen “Cotes” who lived in Henrietta,
Lorain County, Ohio in 1850 with Caroline (age thirty), Augusta, age eight, and
Albert, who was five UN10.
They lived adjacent to Nathanel and Asenath Bodfish in 1850 and 1860;
Nathanel was a blacksmith who was born about 1774 UN11 or 1775 UN10 and
was born in Vermont UN10 or
Massachusetts UN11. Nathanel
may have been the father or a relative of Caroline, for in 1860 (still in
Henrietta, Lorain County), the household of Stephen and Caroline “Couts” included a man named Bodfish
(age forty-six) UN11. It is unclear if
this was his first name, or his surname. In the year 1860, the children of
Stephen and Caroline included Augusta, Frank, Carrol (a six-year-old boy), and
Herbert UN11. Stephen and Caroline Coates lived with fifteen-year-old Carold and eleven-year-old Herbert in Russia Township (this
is New Russia Township), Lorain County, Ohio in 1870, along with Helen Ackley
and Simeon Bodfish, a seventy-year-old blacksmith UN12. Stephen Coats, age sixty-eight, and Jennie S. Coats, age
thirty-eight, were boarders in the household of Charles Noble in Oberlin,
Lorain County, Ohio in 1880 UN13. Their
relationship was not stated. This Stephen Cotes/Couts/Coats
who was enumerated in Lorain County, Ohio was born about 1812 UN11, UN12, UN13 or 1814 UN10 in Vermont UN10, UN11, UN12, UN13 to
parents who were each born in Massachusetts UN13.
His Lorain County, Ohio death record stated that Stephen Coates of Vermont died
in Oberlin, Lorain County at age seventy-seven years and twenty-three days on
March 23, 1889 from paralysis OH7.
While he had been enumerated as a farmer, his death record stated that he was a
shoemaker OH7. He may be buried at Westwood Cemetery in Oberlin, Lorain
County, Ohio.
Emeline Coats was born to
Stephen and Polly Coats on June 11, 1815 in Benson, Rutland County, Vermont VE7, VE12. She was
probably the Emeline Matson who was enumerated with Aaron Matson (age
thirty-eight), Ellin (age nine), Adelia (age six),
and Aaron (age four) in Brownhelm, Lorain County,
Ohio in 1850 UN10. They were enumerated in Brownhelm again in 1860, but their surname was spelled “Mittison” UN11. At that
time, their children were Ellen, Delia, Eugine (age
fourteen – his name may have been Aaron Eugene), Erskine, and Lucy UN11. Aaron and
Emeline Mattison lived in Walton, Eaton County, Michigan in 1870 and 1880
(their surname was spelled “Molteson” in 1880 UN13) UN12,
UN13. Emeline Mattison was born about 1815 UN10,
UN12, UN13 or 1816 UN11 in Vermont UN10,
UN12 or New York UN11, UN13. The 1884 death record for Emeline N. Mattison indicated that her father
was Stephen Coats and stated that she died of paralysis at age seventy
years, three months, and five days as a married woman on September
16, 1884 in Walton, Eaton County, Michigan MI3, which is about eighty miles east of Bangor, where Levi and Polly Hale
settled. The residence of her parents was listed as “Bronson Vt.”
MI3. If her age at the time of her death was correctly recorded, then her birth
occurred about June 11, 1814.
Cyrus H. Coats was
born on July 22, 1818 in Benson, Rutland County, Vermont to Stephen and Polly
Coats VE7, VE12. He was probably the Cyrus Coats who was enumerated with Marion
(age thirty-four), Josephine (age four), and Henry Coats (age one), and Paul Daimes, age fourteen, in Pierrepont,
St. Lawrence County, New York in 1850 UN10.
Cyrus and Mary probably married about 1845. Cyrus H., Mary A., Josephine,
Henry, and Adella Coats lived in Stockholm, St. Lawrence County, New York in
1870 UN12. By 1880, Cyrus H. and Mary A. had relocated to Leominster,
Worcester County, Massachusetts, where they lived with their daughter, Della,
and her husband, Isaac McGregor UN13.
This Cyrus was born about 1817 UN12 or
1818 UN10, UN13 in Vermont UN10, UN12, UN13, and in 1880 the census enumerator
recorded that his father was born in Connecticut, and his mother was born in
Vermont UN13. The record of his death stated that Cyrus H. Coates, the son
of Stephen Coates, was born in Benson, Vermont and died as a widower at age
eighty-two on June 5, 1901 in Leominster, Worcester County, Massachusetts of
paralytic shock, and was buried at Evergreen Cemetery MA56. The stone marker at Evergreen Cemetery in Leominster is
inscribed with six names: Cyrus H. Coates (1818-1901), his wife, Mary A. Train
(1814-1894), Henry T. Coates (1849-1930), Henry’s wife, Orphene
L. Hatch (1850-1921), Lewis C. Coates (1885-1954), and Lewis’ wife, Genevieve
M. Ladd (1888-1981).
Elias Coats was
born on May 8, 1821 in Benson, Rutland County, Vermont to Stephen and Polly
Coats VE7, VE12. He was probably the Elias Coats who was enumerated in Parishville, St. Lawrence County, New York in 1850 with
Lucetta L., age twenty-four, and Luella, who was three UN10. This Elias was born about 1820 UN11, 1821 UN10, UN12, or
1823 UN13 in Vermont UN10, UN11, UN12, UN13.
Elias and Lucetta (or Aleva Lucetta UN12) lived in Colton, St. Lawrence County, New York in 1860, 1870,
and 1880 with Julia, Luthence (or Luthena),
Eliza, Viola, Warren (his name was probably Edwin Warren, as Warren was two in
1860, but Edwin W was ten in 1870) UN11, UN12, UN13.
The youngest child who was enumerated with them was three-year-old Luella in
1850 UN10. Assuming she was their daughter, this indicates a probable
marriage year of about 1846. A gravestone for Elias Coates in Pleasant Mound
Cemetery in Colton, St. Lawrence County, New York stated that he died at age
sixty-one on May 20, 1882 (a photo of this gravestone can be found on the Find a Grave website).
The probable parents of Stephen Coats, Jr.:
Stephen Coats (Charles, Hester) was born
on November 25, 1713 in Westfield, Hampshire County, Massachusetts to Charles
and Hester Coats MA26. He may have been the Stephen Coats who was described
as “a native of Westfield” who “lived in a small house in the ferry lane” in
the very small community of Hockanum near Hadley in Hampshire County,
Massachusetts JU1. Hockanum lies between the Connecticut River and Mount
Holyole and just south of Hadley JU1. This particular Stephen Coats operated a ferry across the
Connecticut River “before 1755” and he was appointed as a “ferryman” by the
Hampshire county court in 1759 and in subsequent years JU1. He also
may have been the Stephen Coats who received a rattlesnake bite on his toe on
September 5, 1760 at Hockanum, Hampshire County JU1. Stephen
allegedly married Martha Kellogg in 1738 in Westfield, and with her was the
father of Charles, Joseph, Stephen Jr., Reuben, Martha, Mary, Thankful, Hannah,
and Elizabeth, who were allegedly born between 1742 and 1758. He allegedly may
have died in 1758, and if so, he couldn’t be the Stephen Coats in the 1800
census who was enumerated as a man who was older than age forty-five in Northampton,
Hampshire County, Massachusetts whose household included one girl under age ten
and one woman who was older than age forty-five.
The parents of Stephen
Coats:
Charles Coats may have been the “Charles,
son of Charles Cott” who was born in Wenham, Essex County, Massachusetts on
November 29, 1686 MA26.
Charles Coats was of Westfield, Hampshire County, Massachusetts married Esther
Neal of Westfield in Springfield, Hampshire County, Massachusetts on February
6, 1705/6 MA26. Charles allegedly died in October 1729.
Hester Neal (Edward, Martha) was born in Westfield,
Hampshire County, Massachusetts on November 8, 1680; her birth record stated
“Heaster Neal the daughter of Edward Neal and Martha his wife was born November
8th 1680” MA26.
She was called “Esther Neal” in her marriage record, but was called “Hester”,
“Heaster”, and “Easter” in the birth records of her children and in one of her
death records MA26. She was the mother
of Elizabeth, who was her firstborn, a second child who lived less than a week
who may have been named Charles, a third child whose name was Charles, and she
was the mother of Edward, Stephen, Abigail, “Margareet”, and “Eliz” MA26.
Elizabeth Coats was born on September 30, 1707 in
Westfield, Hampshire County, Massachusetts MA26. Charles Coats was born on February
9, 1708 but died on February 14, 1708 MA26. Another older set of birth records
of children born to Charles and Hester did not list his name, but simply stated
“Charls Coats & Hester his wife had a child born febrawary 9 & died
febrewary 14 = 1708” MA26. Charles Coats was born on June 3, 1710 in
Westfield, Hampshire County, Massachusetts MA26. He may have married Thankfull.
Deerfield, Massachusetts records indicate that Charles and Thankfull Coats were
the parents of Miriam, born on February 14, 1748/9, Charles, born on April 20,
1751, Ester, born on March 26, 1753 in Deerfield, Franklin County,
Massachusetts, and Simeon, baptized on February 11, 1759 MA26. Edward Coats was born on December 4, 1711 in
Westfield, Hampshire County, Massachusetts MA26. Edward may have married Joanna.
Birth records for Northampton, Massachusetts indicate that Edward and Joanna
Coats were the parents of Esther, born on March 30, 1754, Elihu, born on
November 8, 1755, Elijah, born on November 25, 1757, Gad, born on May 19, 1760,
and Esther, born on September 8, 1762 MA26. Stephen Coats was born on November
25, 1713 in Westfield, Hampshire County, Massachusetts MA26. Abigail Coats was born on December 20, 1715 in
Westfield, Hampshire County, Massachusetts MA26. “Margareet Coots” was born on
January 1, 1719 in Westfield, Hampshire County, Massachusetts MA26. Her birth record indicated that she was born to
“Charls Coots & Elisa his wife”, but the following line stated “Easter
Coots the wife of Charls Coots Died January 22 17278” MA26. “Eliz Coots the Daughter of Charls
Coots & Easter his Wife” was born on January 17, 1721 in Westfield,
Hampshire County, Massachusetts MA26.
Her birth record also stated “That Mrs
Sacket the Midwife Says So” MA26.
Elizabeth Coats married Benjamin Green, and with him was the mother of Silas,
Eunice, Martha, Anna, Benjamin, Thomas, Jepthah, Sarah, Elizabeth, Esther, and
Samuel MA26. Her children were born in West Springfield, Massachusetts from
August 25, 1745 (when Silas was baptized) until March 21, 1760 (when Samuel was
born) MA26. Elizabeth died on April 11, 1760 MA26.
Hester
died on January 22, 1727/8 in Westfield, Massachusetts; the record of her death
called her “Easter Coots the wife of Charls Coots” MA26.
The parents of Hester Neal:
Edward Neal was also Edward “Nell” and “Neel” MA26. He married Martha and was the father of Deborah, Abigail,
Martha, Mary, Edward, Heaster, and Elizabeth MA26. Edward Neal died on May 7, 1698, probably in Westfield,
Hampshire County, Massachusetts MA26.
Martha was the mother of Abigail, Heaster, and Elizabeth and was probably the mother of Deborah, Martha, Mary, and Edward MA26. Deborah Nell was called the daughter of Edward Nell but her birthdate was not listed in her birth record MA26. She may have been born on May 1, 1670 in Westfield, Hampshire County, Massachusetts, as the record stated: “Edward Nell had a daughter born the first May 1670_ Deborah Nell the daughter of Edward Nell was born_” MA26. Abigail Nell was born to Edward and Martha in Westfield, Hampshire County, Massachusetts on April 23, 1672 MA26. Martha Nell was born in Westfield, Hampshire County, Massachusetts on May 8, 1677 MA26. Mary Nell was born in 1678 in Westfield, Hampshire County, Massachusetts MA26. Edward Neel was born on February 8, 1678 in Westfield, Hampshire County, Massachusetts MA26. Heaster Neal was born in Westfield, Hampshire County, Massachusetts to Edward and Martha on November 8, 1680 MA26. Elizabeth Neal was born to Edward and Martha in Westfield, Hampshire County, Massachusetts on February 25, 1682 MA26.
