Henry Cogan of Taunton was the brother of John Cogan of Taunton WI43. John Cogan called himself a merchant late of Taunton, Somerset when he wrote his will on April 20, 1614 WI43. He stated that he wished to be buried at the Church of Wellington and he made several bequests to local churches and the poor inhabitants of the towns of Taunton Magdalen and Charde WI43. He did not mention a wife or children, but he did make bequests to nieces, kinspeople, and other named individuals WI43. His will stated “I give and bequeath to every of the daughters of Henry Cogan of Taunton my brother fyve poundes to be payed them within one yere next after my deathe that is to saye to soe many of them as shalbe then living fyve poundes apeece” WI43. He also made bequests to the two daughters of Timothie Potts, who was a barber of Chard, Robert Baylie, who was the son of Christian Baylie, whom he referred to as his “kynneswoman”, and Elizabeth Cole, who was the wife of John Cole of Taunton WI43. He also bequeathed ten pounds to John, the son of Henry Cogan of Taunton; the remainder of his goods and chattels he bequeathed to William Cogan of Wellington, who he called his kinsman and whom he named as his sole executor WI43. The will was probated on June 8, 1614 (“Octavo dei mense Junii Anno Domini millesimo sexcentesimo decimo quarto”) WI43.
Henry may have been related to or the brother of Tamsin Coggan, who married “Pet Marler” (probably Peter Marler) on May 16, 1589/90 according to the register of St. Mary Magdalene in Taunton, Somerset, England SO1. Henry’s father may have been Henry Cogan, who on July 1, 1565, married Elizabeth Carye in Chedzoy, Somerset MC2, SP3, which is about fifteen miles from Taunton. The record of their marriage in the Chedzoy, Somerset, England register stated “Henry Coggane and Elizabeth Carye were maryed the first daye of July” in 1565 SO1. The children of Henry and Elizabeth were perhaps Henry, John, Tamsin, Thomas, Elizabeth, and an unnamed daughter MC2, SP3. Henry (the potential father of Henry) may have created a will circa 1577 MC2, SP3. An individual named Elizabeth Coggen (who may have been Henry’s mother) died on April 17, 1615, according to the burial register of St. Mary Magdalene Church in Taunton, Somerset SO1. A possible ancestor of Henry Cogan may have been Sir William Cogan, and perhaps also his wife, Isabel CA13. Isabel’s inquisition post mortem occurred at Taunton, Somerset, on November 16, 1420, and stated that she died on August 21, 1400, and held the manor of Huntspill in Somerset for life, one third of the manor of Wigborough, Somerset as her dower of the king in chief, and the manor of Uffclulme in Devon, aside from four marks of rent from that manor CA13. Huntspill and Chedzoy are less than seven miles apart.
Henry Cogan was married to Joane Boridge on November 30, 1590 at the Church of St. Mary Magdalene in Taunton, Somerset, England PH3, MC2. The record of their marriage indicated that “henrie Cogan” and “Jone Boridge” were married on November 30, 1590 in St. Mary Magdalene Church in Taunton, Somerset SO1. Henry Cogan’s will, in which he was described as a clothier, was dated November 27, 1612 and probated June 29, 1613; a transcript follows WI15:

Henry was buried at the Church of St. Mary Magdalene in Taunton, Somerset, England on December 1, 1612 SO1, MC2, SP3, SH3, and his will was probated on June 29, 1613 (“vicesimo nono die mensis Junii anno Domini millesimo sexcentesimo decimo tertio”) WI15.
Joane Boridge was the mother of Johane or Joan, John, Judeth or Judith, Marie or Mary, Elizabeth, Anne, Grace, Richard, Marian, Frances or Fraunces, and Henery MC2, SP3, SH3. Henry’s 1612 will stated that Joane was the mother of the daughters named within his will, who were Johane, Judith, Mary, Elizabeth, Anne, and Frances (“Item my farther will and meaninge is that yf either of my daughters Doe happen to Marrie withoute the consente of Joane Cogan their mother…”) WI15.
Johane Cogan was named as Henry’s daughter in his 1612 will (“Item I give and bequeath unto Johane Cogan my daughter the somme of tenn poundes of Currannte English money to be paide unto her in one moneth nexte after her marriage by my Executrix”) WI15. According to the marriage register of St. Mary Magdalane in Taunton, Somerset, England, Joan Coggan married William Durston on April 13, 1618, on the same day as her sister’s wedding to William Kinge SO1.
John, the son of Henrie Coggan, was christened on April 16, 1593 according to the baptismal registry of St. Mary Magdalene in Taunton, Somerset, England SO1. John Cogan was named as Henry’s son in his 1612 will (“John Cogan my sonne thee payer [pair] of loambes furnished with flees and such lyke thinges as belonge unto them to be delivered unto him at his Daie of marriage by my saide executrix”) WI15. John Coggen married Margerett Gaspye on June 12, 1615, according to the St. Mary Magdalene of Taunton marriage registry SO1. They were probably the parents of five children whose baptismal and burial records were listed in the St. Mary Magdalane of Taunton records SO1. These children were each referred to as the son or daughter of John Coggen, Coggan, or Cogan in their records. These were John, christened on November 28, 1616, Robert, who was christened on May 7, 1618 and buried on October 14, 1618, another son named Robert, christened on October 28, 1619, Henry, who was christened on January 5, 1622/3 and who was buried four days later on January 9, 1622/3, and a daughter whose name appears to state “Jochan”, who was christened on March 7, 1623/4 SO1. John was probably still alive on December 17, 1643 when “Margarett wife of John Coggan” was buried SO1.
Judeth (or possibly “Judieth”) was called the daughter of Henrie Cogghan in her christening record noted in the St. Mary Magdalene registry of Taunton, Somerset which was dated June 13, 1594 SO1. Judith Cogan was named as Henry’s daughter in his 1612 will (“Item I give and bequeath unto Judith Cogan my daughter the some of tenn poundes of currannte english money to be paide unto her in one moneth nexte after her marriage by my saide executrix”) WI15. According to the St. Mary Magdalene records of Taunton, Somerset, England, Judith Coggan married William Kinge on April 13, 1618 SO1. William and Judith were likely the parents of “Samuell sonne of William Kinge”, who was christened on December 30, 1618 at St. Mary Magdalene in Taunton, Somerset, England SO1. William died shortly after this, as the St. Mary Magdalene registery indicates that he was buried just over one year later on May 15, 1619 SO1. Judeth Kinge married Giles Rickard on January 20, 1623/4, according to the registry for West Hatch, Somerset, England SO1. Judith and Giles Rickard may have been the parents of Giles Rickard, who married Hannah Dunham, and of John Rickard, who married Esther or Hester Barnes TO1. Both Giles Rickard, Jr. and John Rickard resided in Plymouth in the Massachusetts Bay Colony TO1.
Marie, the daughter of “Herrie Coggan”, was christened on November 22, 1694, according to the baptismal registry for St. Mary Magdalene Church in Taunton, Somerset, England SO1. Mary Cogan was named as Henry’s daughter in his 1612 will (“Item I give and bequeath unto Mary Cogan my daughter the some of tenne pounde of currante english money to be paide unto her in one moneth next after her marriage by my Saide Executrix”) WI15. Mary Coggen married James Glass on January 24, 1612/13, according to the marriage register of St. Mary Magdalene in Taunton, Somerset, England SO1. James Glass (or Glasse) was named as the father of nine or ten children whose baptisms and burials were recorded at St. Mary Magdalane in Taunton, Somerset, England SO1. These were Henry, who was christened on August 11, 1614 and buried on March 7, 1623/4, Mary, christened on February 2, 1616/7, Ammy, christened on December 10, 1618, Roger, christened on August 7, 1623, Henry, christened on September 26, 1624, Joan, who was christened on January 28, 1626/7 and buried on July 12, 1627, an unnamed daughter who was buried on October 10, 1628, Joane, christened on April 2, 1629, Peter, christened on August 28, 1631, and Thamazen, christened on January 26, 1633/4 SO1. The St. Mary Magdalene register indicated that James Glass was buried on February 22, 1637/8 SO1. Mary Glass may have been the “mary glas” whose burial on August 26, 1649 was noted in the register of St. James Church in Taunton, Somerset, England SO1.
Elizabeth, the daughter of Henrie Coggan, was christened on March 13, 1596/7 in St. Mary Magdalene in Taunton, Somerset, England SO1. Elizabeth Cogan was named as Henry’s daughter in his 1612 will (“Item I give unto Elizabeth Cogan my daughter the some of tenne poundes of Currante english money to be paide unto her in one moneth nexte after her marriage by my saide Executrix”) WI15. An Elizabeth Coggen was buried on April 17, 1615 SO1, but it is unclear if this Elizabeth was the daughter of Henry and Joan Cogan. As mentioned above, this Elizabeth might have been Henry’s mother.
Anne, the daughter of “Henr Coggan”, was christened on March 25, 1598/9 in St. Mary Magdalene in Taunton, Somerset, England SO1. Anne Cogan was named as Henry’s daughter in his 1612 will (“Item I give and bequeath to Anne Cogan my daughter the some of tenne pounds of Currannte english money to be paide unto her in one moneth nexte after her mariage by my saide executrix”) WI15. Anne, the daughter of Henry Coggan, was buried on September 6, 1614, according to the St. Mary Magdalene register SO1.
Grace, the daughter of “Henr Coggan”, was christened on October 9, 1600 in St. Mary Magdalene in Taunton, Somerset, England SO1. She was not mentioned in Henry’s will, which indicates that she may have died prior to 1612. Richard, the son of “Henr Cogan”, was christened on January 17, 1601/2 at St. Mary Magdalene in Taunton, Somerset; Richard, the son of Henry Coggan, was buried on September 6, 1620 SO1. Although he died after his father, he was not mentioned in his father’s will. Marian, the daughter of “Henr Cogan” was christened on August 10, 1603 at St. Mary Magdalene in Taunton, Somerset, England SO1. Fraunces, the daughter of “Henry Coggen” was christened on February 24, 1604 at St. Mary Magdalene in Taunton, Somerset, England SO1.
Henrey, the son of “Henerey Cogon” was christened on April 26, 1607 at St. Mary Magdalene in Taunton, Somerset, England SO1. He was not mentioned in his father’s 1612 will. He may have been the “Henry Coging” who married “Abegall Byshop” on March 14, 1636/7 in Bridport, Dorsetshire, England DO26. Henry and Abigail Coggan were the parents of Abigail, who was baptized in Dorchester, England in 1638, and four additional children whose baptisms were recorded in Barnstable, Massachusetts: Thomas, who was baptized on March 2, 1639/40 and died or was buried on January or February 26, 1658/9, John, baptized on February 12, 1642/3, Mary, baptized on April 20, 1645 and buried on May 3, 1645, and Henry, who was baptized on October 11, 1646 AN7. Henry Coggen had returned from Barnstable, Massachusetts to England, where he died about June 16, 1649, according to the inventory of his possessions, which stated “henery Coggen late of Barnstable now Deceased in England about the 16th of June last” BO37. Abigaill Coggen testified at the General Court held at New Plymouth on October 29, 1649 that the inventory was true BO37.
Joane died sometime after her husband’s will was probated WI15.
