William Everett was born circa 1781 in New Jersey UN10, or perhaps in about
1787, as he was reportedly seventy years old at the time of his death MI4. He was the father of three known
children, Richard B. Everett, Sarah M. Easton, and Prudence Williamson, who was
a schoolteacher HI8,
TH8. There is a
possibility that he may have been the William Everett who was between
twenty-six and forty-four, with a wife of the same age bracket, who lived in
Farmington, Ontario County, New York with one boy and three girls under the age
of ten at the time of the 1820 census UN7.
His son, Richard,
was called “of Livingston County, New York” GE4.
There is a chance that William may have been the William Everett who lived in
Geneseo, Livingston County, New York in 1830 with one girl under age five, one girl
between ten and fourteen, one young man between fifteen and nineteen, one man
between twenty and twenty-nine, and one woman between forty and forty-nine;
this William was between fifty and fifty-nine. The age bracket for the eldest
man in that household does not quite match the estimated age of William as
recorded in the 1850 US Census, or the age at the time of his death. Geneseo,
Livingston County is about thirty-six miles southwest of Farmington, Ontario
County.
William moved to the Hartford, Michigan area in
the autumn of 1837, and settled on Section 26 in the southwest quarter HI8. The 1840 US Census of Hartford, Van
Buren County, Michigan did not record the name of William Everett, but did
record the name of Richard B. Everett, whose household included one boy and one
girl, each under the age of five, one man and one woman of twenty, but younger
than thirty, and one man of fifty, but younger than sixty UN9. At that time, the population of Hartford
totaled just seventy-six individuals, and of those, only two were men of the
age of fifty, yet under the age of sixty. Because an older woman did not reside
in the household of Richard B. Everett in 1840, this may have indicated that at
that time, William lived with his son, yet his wife lived elsewhere; this would
explain why it was Richard, and not William, who was listed as the head of the
household. William, his wife, and Justus and Emily Hill created a new branch of
the Lawrence Baptist Church in Keeler, Michigan in 1843 HI8.
In
1850, William, who was a farmer, and Sarah, his wife, lived next to Richard
Everett and his family. William was said to have died on August 25, 1857 at the
age of seventy, and was buried in Keeler Township, Van Buren County, Michigan MI4. The gravestone for William
“Everitt” is adjacent to Sarah’s in Keeler Cemetery in Van Buren County,
Michigan, and stated that he died at the age of seventy years and eight months on
August 25 (a photo of this gravestone can be found on the Find a Grave website). The year of his death on his gravestone
appears to state “1851”, and not “1857”. A representative from
the Van Buren County Clerk’s office was unable to locate a probate record for
William Everett.

Sarah was born about 1789 MI4, 1790 UN10, or
1791 UN11 in New Jersey UN10, UN11. She was the mother of Richard B., Prudence J., and Sarah
M. Everett. Richard B. Everett was born about 1812 UN11 or 1813 UN12, UN13 in New Jersey UN11, UN12, UN13, or July 1812 in New
York to William and Sarah “Everitt” MI3. Richard Everett of Livingston County,
New York purchased land in Keeler Township, which was later Hartford Township,
in Van Buren County, Michigan on March 10, 1837 CO39. This may have been the same land
transaction which was recorded by the General Land Office when Richard Everett
of Livingston County, New York purchased 160 acres of land in Section 26,
Township 3 South in Van Buren County, Michigan in a land patent dated May 1,
1839 GE4.
Richard B. Everett of Hartford married Nancy F. Dyer of Lawrence on
February 26, 1852 in the home of Peter V. Dyer in Lawrence, Van Buren County,
Michigan VA12.
Richard had been most likely previously married, as the 1850 US Census for
Hartford, Van Buren County recorded six children ranging from age two to
fourteen, but no wife was listed in his family at that time UN10. Richard and Nancy Everet
lived in Hartford, Van Buren County with their children and with Sarah Everet during the time of the 1860 census UN11. R.B. and Nancy “Everetts”
lived in Keeler, Van Buren County in 1870 with Arilla
Dyer, whose occupation was “lives with her daughter” (she was Richard’s
mother-in-law) UN12.
Richard and Nancy continued to live in Keeler in 1880, at which time the census
enumerator noted that Richard was ill with rheumatism UN13. He died at age seventy-seven years and
four months in Keeler, Van Buren County, Michigan on November 22, 1889 MI3.
Prudence J. Everett was born about 1815
in New Jersey UN10. She married Peter Williamson on
September 2, 1837 in Hunterdon County, New Jersey HU23. Prudence J. and Peter Williamson lived in Hartford, Van
Buren County, in 1850; Peter
was born about 1808 UN10. A gravestone for Prudence J., the wife of
Peter Williamson, is located in Keeler Cemetery in
Keeler, Van Buren County, Michigan, and indicated that she died at age
forty-eight on October 10, 1855 (a photo of which can be located on the Find a Grave website). This gravestone
is adjacent to Sarah Everitt’s gravestone, which is next to William Everitt’s
gravestone. Peter A. Williamson, age forty-nine,
married Phebe C. Chersey in Van Buren County, Michigan on July 3, 1856 MI2. Phoebe, and not
Prudence, was
not enumerated with Peter in Hartford in 1860 or 1870 UN11, UN12. Sarah M. Everett (William, Sarah) was born circa 1828 in New
York UN10, UN12, UN13 or about 1829 in New York UN11.
Sarah died at the age
of seventy-three on September 24, 1862 in Keeler Township MI4. Her gravestone is between those of her
daughter, Prudence, and her husband, William, in Keeler Cemetery in Van Buren
County, Michigan. A photo of her gravestone can be located on the Find a Grave website, and it states that
Sarah was the wife of William “Everitt”, and she died on September 24, 1862.
