Samuel Preston, Sr. (Roger, Martha) was born in 1651 in Ipswich, Essex County, Massachusetts TH17, AN9, DO14. At the age of about fifteen on June 19, 1666, he was deposed by Simon Bradstreete, and testified that his brother, Thomas, bought one red heifer of his father one and a half years previously DO14. On June 26, 1666, the Salem Quarterly Court ruled in favor of Thomas Preston, the plaintiff, who had stated that John Newman had removed the heifer from his possession DO13, PR4. Samuel was a carpenter and yeoman BE7, PR4, and he married Susanna Gutterson on May 27, 1672 in Andover, Essex County, Massachusetts VI3, DO16, TO1, AN9, PR4. He received land grants on January 1, 1677 and March 1, 1680 in Andover PR4.
He was most likely the same Samuel Preston who testified against Martha Carrier sometime in July 1692; during his deposition, he stated that he was forty-one years old, and that two years beforehand in the month of June, he had a disagreement or a difference with Martha (he added that these disputes had occurred several times previously), and very soon after this, one of his cows died in a strange manner, on her back with her heels pointing upward FR16. He stated that within one month, he and Martha had another difference, and then she reminded him of his deceased cow, and predicted that he would soon lose another cow FR16. Samuel said that this did happen; a cow which he kept well fed with English hay quickly laid down and died FR16. Samuel Preston’s testimony was one of several witnesses, and ultimately Martha Carrier was executed for the crime of witchcraft, on August 19, 1692 FR16. The transcript of Samuel’s testimony stated FR16:
Samuel Preston aged about 41: years Saith that about 2 yeares since I had some difference w'th Martha Carrier w'ch also had hapened sever'll times before and soon after I lost a Cow in a strange manner being Cast upon her back w'th her heels up in firm ground when she was very Lusty it being in June & within abo't month after this the s'd Martha & I had some difference again at which Time she told me I had lost a Cow lately & it Would not or should not be long before I should loose Another w'ch accordingly came to pass. for I had a Cow that was well kept w'th English Hay & I could not p'rceive that she aild any thing & yet she pined & quickley lay downe as if she was asleep & dyed
