Mathew
Osborn II (Mathew) was born about 1697 OS1. He was a Quaker, and he declared his
intention to marry Isabella Dobson on August 21, 1723 at the Duck Creek Monthly
Meeting in Delaware, and they were married between September 18 and October 15 in
1723 OS1. The record of the second publication of their intent to marry, in the
Duck Creek Monthly Minutes on September 18, 1723, logged their names as Matthew
“Ozbourn” and “Issabel” Dobson WR2. Mathew was mentioned in his father’s
will dated December 10, 1733 SU6.
Mathew, Isabel, and their family relocated in 1748 from
Delaware to Warrington Township, York County, Pennsylvania, where they attended the
Warrington Monthly Meeting OS1.
According to the records of the Warrington Monthly Meeting, on June 17, 1749,
Mathew “Ozbun” produced a Certificate to the Warrington Meeting from the Duck
Creek Monthly Meeting for himself and his wife, which was dated July 18, 1748,
which recommended that the Warrington Meeting receive them CO14. Mathew was still in the Warrington area on February 15, 1752,
when the records of that monthly meeting stated, “Warrington complains of
Henery Clark for drinking to access: Mathew Ozbun to desire him to be at next
meeting” CO14. In the latter part of 1752, Mathew and his family traveled south
to Virginia, where they resided only temporarily, because allegedly they
discerned that the residents there who followed the doctrines of the Church of
England were unable to accept the Osborns’ Quaker beliefs OS1, LA1.
They continued on a
southerly path toward North Carolina, built their log home about twelve to
fifteen miles south of Greensboro OS1, LA1, and Mathew was received at the Cane Creek Monthly Meeting on
February 3, 1753, with a certificate from the Warrington Monthly Meeting which
had been issued on September 10, 1752 HI4.
A Warrington Monthly Meeting record, which was dated August 18, 1753, stated
that Mathew “Ozburn” had requested a certificate for himself and his family to
“Cain Creek”, North Carolina CO14.
In
addition to his work as a gunsmith, Mathew ran the mill on Cane Creek OS1. Because the Osborn family lived roughly equidistant between the
Cane Creek Monthly Meeting and the New Garden meeting location, each about
fifteen miles from his home, the local families decided to form a new meeting,
and they initially gathered in their own cabins OS1. After their small community attracted more Quaker families,
Mathew, John Beals, Isaac Beeson, Peter Dix, and William Hocket OS1 acquired a parcel of seven acres of land to construct a
meetinghouse OS1, LA1. The
New Garden Meeting permitted them to hold their own meetings in 1757, and their
meetinghouse, named Center Monthly Meeting, for it was between New Garden and
Cane Creek, was built in 1763 OS1. The
monthly meeting was established in 1772 OS1.
Seth Hinshaw claimed
that because Mathew was known as a gunsmith who created hunting rifles, he was
solicited to craft rifles for the Continental Army, but he refused HI3. Further, he attempted to re-purchase the
guns he had previously sold to his clients, and these he rendered inoperable
when he thrust each gun barrel into the heat and twisted it backward onto
itself HI3. Purportedly, one of the deer rifles he
had created was appropriated by an unnamed man and used in the Battle of
Guilford Courthouse on March 15, 1781, but after this individual returned the
rifle, Mathew dashed it against a tree stump to make it inoperative, because it
had become a tool of violence against humanity, which violated his core
principle of pacifism OS1.
Mathew
was said to have died at the age of eighty-six on June 5, 1783 LA1. The records of the Center Monthly Meeting in Guilford County,
North Carolina state that Matthew Ozbun, Sr. died on the 22nd day of the 6th
month, 1783 and was buried the following day at the Center Friends’ Burying
Ground US11. A memorial marker at Centre Friends Cemetery was unveiled in
October 1926 LA1. According to Dr.
Elwood C. Perisho of Guilford College, “The base of this monument is an old
mill stone. The second part is an old rock wheel used to crush gold ore in the
early mining experiences of the North Carolinians. Then on top of the two
stones is a beautiful granite monument brought from the quarries of South
Carolina” LA1.
