John Wheeler ★ (Dominick, Mercye) was called the son of Dominicke Wheeler in his christening record on November 4, 1591 in the registry of St. Edmund’s Church in Salisbury, Wiltshire, England WI40, EN4, DA13, which also recorded that John Whelyer married Agnes Yeoman on December 1, 1611 WI40, EN6, SA1. John was described as “of Salisbury” in Wiltshire, England, but “now in New England” in a General Court Record dated October 16, 1650 SH20. John was a barber DA13. He and his wife, Annes, and two of his sons, Edward and John, were mentioned in the last will and testament of his father, Domny Wheller of New Sarum (in Salisbury) which was dated December 12, 1615 WI47.
Walter Goodwin Davis explained how the individual named John “Whelyer” who arrived in New England on the ship Mary and John in March 1634 could not have been the John Wheeler of Salisbury and Newbury, the subject of this biographical sketch DA13. On March 24 or 26, 1633/4, a John “Whelyer” departed from England on the ship Mary and John, whose master was Robert Sayres CU7. This ship had been detained in the Thames on February 14, 1633/4, by an order of the king’s Privy Council, but the passengers took an oath of allegiance to the king, and after this, they were permitted to sail, and they arrived in Boston in May 1634 CU7. Most of these passengers moved to Newbury, Essex County, Massachusetts in the early part of 1635 CU7. John “Wheller” and his wife “Anne” were listed as the parents of a son named Henry, who was baptized on February 8, 1634/5 at St. Edmund’s Church EN4, and in 1678, the son of John Wheeler, Henry, stated that he was forty-three years old, which indicates that he was born in about 1635 DA13. Walter Goodwin Davis pointed out that John “Wheller”, who was in Wiltshire, England in February 1634/5 could not have been the John “Whelyer” who left England in March 1633/4 DA13.
After sailing to New England sometime in or before 1641, John Wheeler and his family first resided in Hampton, New Hampshire, and in 1641 they lived in Salisbury, old Norfolk County (now Essex County), Massachusetts, finally settling in Newbury, Essex County, Massachusetts by the year 1650 DA13. His land in Salisbury was located on the west side of the road to Hampton ME3. John “Wheler” was granted two acres for a house lot “lyng upon ye north side of Mr: Will: Hook’s house lott butting upon ye highway leading to Hampton” in a general meeting of the freemen of Salisbury on July 10, 1641 SA19. His house lot was mentioned in another Salisbury town meeting on May 8, 1645, in which the freemen laid out three acres of upland to Goodman Eaton next to John Wheeler’s house lot SA19.
On March 1, 1651, John and Daniel Wheeler were named as a freeholders of Newbury who had an interest in the common land CU7, but the rate for Salisbury, dated July 18, 1652, indicated that “Jno Wheler” owed one shilling and six pence HO19. He and over two dozen men signed a petition to the court of Massachusetts Bay on May 14, 1654, which requested a reduction of Lieutenant Robert Pike’s fine CU7, CH2, DO12.
John died after the date of his will, March 28, 1668, but before it was proved at the court in Hampton on October 11, 1670 AM1, TH27. John’s will was witnessed by Anthony Somerby, Augustinn Stickney (or Augustinn Stedman; the name “Augustinn Stickney” was written in one hand, but further to the right, the name “Stedman” was written in a different hand), Roger Woodman, Beniamine (Benjamin) Lowle, and Jonathan Woodman AM1. The transcription below is a faithful reproduction of a handwritten copy of the original, and this copy included several words and phrases in brackets AM1. A notation at the foot of the final page of his will stated, “The words & letters in square brackets taken from the record Norfolk Records Book 2 Part 2 folio 192 old numbering or folio 288 in new numbering” AM1.
