Emry Elmer Marrison (John, Esther) was born on April 18, 1880,
according to his obituary EM2, World War I draft card US14, and death certificate,
which was issued by the Michigan Department of Health. His birth location was in
Williamston, Ingham County, Michigan, as the 1880 census which enumerated his
family stated he was just one month old at that time. He moved to Eden Township
when he was four, and he married Hattie Alice Morse on December 11, 1912 in
Hart, Michigan EM2, HA26, MI8. Their marriage record
indicated that “Emery Elmer Morrison” applied for a marriage license the day
before his wedding, and he was thirty-two years of age, had not previously been
married, and was a resident of Mason County, Michigan MI8. His
mother and father were listed as John Morrison and Esther Pierce MI8.
George H. Hancock, a clergyman, performed the marriage ceremony in Hart, Oceana
County, Michigan, which was witnessed by Fred and Inez Morse, Hattie’s siblings
MI8.
Their wedding was very briefly mentioned on page three in The Ludington
Chronicle on December 18, 1912: “Emery Morrison and Miss Hattie Morse
daughter of Rev. William Morse were married last week.” His
World War I draft registration card from September 12, 1918 stated that he was
a farmer who resided in Custer, Mason County, Michigan
and his nearest relative was Hattie A. Marrison US14. He
was described as medium height, medium build, light gray eyes, and he was
partially balding with black hair US14.
The 1930 census recorded that the Marrison
family did not yet have a radio, but both Emry and
Hattie could read and write, and the 1940 census stated that Emry had attended school until the seventh grade. Census records
indicate that he was a farmer, and in particular, the 1940 census stated that
he owned his farm, and during the week of March 24th
through 30th, he stated that he and his son, Howard, each worked about
seventy-five hours, which indicated that they worked over twelve hours per day,
if they chose to rest on Sunday. The 1940 census stated that Emry and Howard, who was seventeen, worked every week of
the previous year, and that Emry’s oldest daughter
who was living with him at the time, Gladys, sorted beans in the canning pantry
for five hours in 1939.
Emry Marrison was
enumerated on a farm in Eden Township, Mason County, Michigan in the 1950 US
Census UN19. He stated that he was born in Michigan and was a farmer who
worked fifty-six hours per week UN19. At
this time, he was seventy years old and was enumerated with his wife, Hattie Marrison, and his son, Howard, who was an unmarried farmer
who was twenty-seven years old UN19. He
was asked additional questions and stated that one year prior (1949) he lived
at this same residence, had been educated to the 7th grade level, and that his father was born in England and his
mother was born in the United States UN19. He
stated that the previous year, he worked every week of the year, and had never
served in any armed forces UN19.
Prior to his death, he had been in ill health for eight years EM2, and
Mildred Fishel stated that he endured frequent bouts
of stomach ulcers. According to his death certificate, Emry
had lived in Eden Township for seventy-nine years, and the cause of his death
was carcinoma of the stomach, from which he had been ill for nine months, in
addition to arteriosclerosis. He passed away at age eighty-three on May 5, 1963
at 11:00am in his home at Eden Township, Mason County, Michigan. Funeral
services were held at Stephens Chapel, and he was buried at Lakeside Cemetery
in Eden Township. An untitled article regarding his death, located on the same
page as his obituary (page three in The Ludington Daily News on May 6,
1963) stated that he was to be buried in Eden Cemetery, and his funeral would
be officiated by Reverend Kenneth Snow.
