Lavoisier Watson Disbrow (Lodowick,
Sarah) was born in Bangor Township, Van Buren County, Michigan RO27, MI4 on October 13, 1865 FE1, RO27 or October 13, 1866 MI4, LA18. The 1900 census stated that he was born
in October 1862. A transcription of his death record stated that the parents of
“Lavoysirr Watson Disbrow” were Lodwick W. Disbrow
and Sarah Jane Whitcomb, and his wife was Cora Alice Disbrow MI4. On Sunday, September 8, 1878, he “fell
from the big beam of the barn to the floor” and broke both the radius and ulna
in his right arm, but Dr. M.F. Palmer set his arm TH2. The newspaper article stated, “The
family think broken bones are their fate, as this is their third case” TH2.
The 1900 census
indicated that he and Cora were married about the year 1886, because in 1900, Lavoisier and
Cora had been married for fourteen years. Lavoisier chose to celebrate his
birthday by marrying Cora Alice Easton on October 13, 1886 in Van Buren County,
Michigan LA18, RO27. At age twenty-one, he bought forty acres of
land and began farming, and he eventually purchased a total of 100 acres RO27. While Lavoisier was
a Republican, he was not active in the Republican Party, but he had a keen
interest in public affairs and national policy, and he was a member of the society of Gleaners RO27, Chapter Number 933 LW1, LA18.
Lavoisier may have
been a veteran of either the Spanish-American War or World War I, because in
the 1940 census, Cora was asked supplemental questions; she stated that she was
a widow of a veteran, and “SW” was written in cell 41 of that census record, which
was the abbreviation for the Spanish-American War and World War I. If Lavoisier
was a veteran of either of those wars, the more likely
choice would have been the Spanish-American War, as he was much younger at that
time. He would have been thirty-two when that war occurred in 1898, but in his
early fifties during World War I. No record of his military service has been
located, and spelling
variations of the name “Lavoisier Disbrow” were not noted in the
Spanish-American War Service Record Index GE11.
He was involved in at least four real estate transactions in
1902. “L W Disbrow to L W Disbrow, e ½ n w ¼ n w ¼ 28 Bangor; $100” and “L W
Disbrow to A A Disbrow, w ½
n w ¼ n w ¼ 28 Bangor; $100” were recorded on November 26, 1902 in Hartford
Day Spring HA20. The same newspaper, one week later,
recorded two more real estate transfers: “L W Disbrow to A A Disbrow; s e ¼ s e ¼ 20 Bangor; $100” and “L W
Disbrow to A A Disbrow; s w ¼ s w ¼ 21 Bangor; $10”
(there may have been another zero, but it seems to have been marred) HA21. In 1910, he owned a grain farm. The 100-acre plot of land owned by L.W.
Disbrow was mapped in 1912, and was positioned north
of 42nd Avenue and east of 66th Street, just north of Van Auken Lake OG1.
A storm drain ran through the northwest corner of his lot OG1. One of two forty acre lots which belonged to A.A. Disbrow was adjacent to this, on
the northwest edge of L.W. Disbrow’s land OG1.
Two additional twenty-acre plots were owned by E. Disbrow and H. Disbrow, and
these were situated southwest of the plot owned by L.W. Disbrow OG1.
At the time of the 1930
census, he and Cora were living with their son, Albert. Lavoisier died at almost
the age of sixty-eight LW1, FU1
on September 26, 1934 LA18 in
Bangor, Van Buren County, and was buried in Maple Hill Cemetery, Hartford, Van
Buren, Michigan LW1,
LA18, but his death
record stated that he died at the age of sixty-seven on September 21, 1934 in
St. Joseph, Berrien County, Michigan MI4.
His death was caused by “heart trouble” which presented in the last year of his
life LW1. His obituary and an article of his life
were printed in the local newspaper, Hartford Day Spring, on October 3,
1934 FU1, LA18. Both have been reproduced below FU1, LA18:
Funeral services were held Friday
afternoon at the Albert Disbrow home in North Watervliet for Lavoiser W. Disbrow, 68, who passed away at the son’s home
at an early hour Wednesday, September 28 [sic].
Burial was in Maple Hill cemetery, Hartford. Deceased is survived by the widow,
five sons and two daughters as follows: Albert, Merwin and Mrs.
George Krieger of Watervliet; Warren, of Lawton; Irwin of Hammond, Ind.; Mrs.
Viola Watkins of Bangor and Donald of Marcellus. Mr. Disbrow and family moved
to Watervliet from near Bangor about 15 years ago and built a home on South Main street where he resided until a few years ago
when he and Mrs. Disbrow went to reside with the son. He had been in ill health
for some time and a few weeks ago his condition became
critical.
Lavoysier W. Disbrow was born Oct. 13, 1866, in
Bangor township and departed this life Sept. 26, 1934, at the home of his son,
Albert L., north of Watervliet, at the age of 67 years, 11 months and 13 days.
He was the elder son of Mr. and Mrs. L.W. Disbrow, pioneers of Van Buren county. He was united in marriage Oct. 13, 1886,
to Cora A. Easton. To this union nine children were born, two of whom died in
infancy. For several
years he owned and operated a farm within a mile of his parents. During this time he became a charter member of the Toquin
Arbor No. 933, Ancient Order of Gleaners. In later life after disposing of his
farm he built a home in Watervliet, where he lived until his health failed. He
then took up his residence with his son. Mr. Disbrow
is survived by the wife, Cora A., seven children, Leta Krieger of Watervliet,
Warren of Lawton, Albert of north Watervliet, Viola Watkins of Lawrence
township, Erwin of Hammond, Ind., Merwin of Watervliet, Donald of Marcellus and
15 grandchildren, also one brother, Alberto A. Disbrow of South Haven, besides several nephews and nieces and a number of friends. Funeral
services were held at the home of Albert L. Disbrow in north Watervliet Friday,
Sept. 28, 1934 at 2 o’clock, Rev. Scott MacDonald of Bangor officiating, and
interment was at Maple Hill cemetery in Hartford. The pallbearers were
Gleaners.

Cora
Alice Easton (Sylvester, Sarah) was born on August 13, 1864
in Hartford, Michigan MR3, MI5, and
had five siblings, including Albert, Delbert, Wilbur, Warren, and Annie RO27. According to the 1940 census, she was born in Michigan
and she attended school through the seventh grade.
Cora and her younger brother, Warren, were minors when their mother died
sometime between June 1881 and January 1883 TH8, PR10. On
January 29, 1883, their guardian, A.N. Spaulding, petitioned the Probate Court
of Van Buren County to sell the property owned by Cora
and Warren Easton MI26:
the South east quarter of section No. twenty one (21) in town
three (3) south – of Range sixteen (16) west in the county of Van Buren and
state of Michigan, each of said minors owning an undivided one fifth thereof
subject however to the dower interest of Sarah M. Easton widow of said
Sylvester G. Easton:
Your
petitioner further shows unto the court that the said real estate has been
leased ever since the death of said Sylvester G. Easton in 1868 with the
exception of a very brief period, that it has been illy managed by the lessees
and is constantly depreciating in value and that as your petitioner verily
believe it would be for the best interest of his said wards that their interest
in said real estate should be sold and the proceeds thereof p?? out on interest
Your
petitioner further shoes that the interest of said minors in said real estate
is of the value of Twelve Hundred Dollars as near as he can estimate the same
Wherefore,
Your Petitioner prays that he may be empowered and license to sell the Real
Estate hereinbefore described…
The same day, the Probate
Court agreed “that it would be for the best interests of said minors that said
real estate be sold and the proceeds arising therefrom be otherwise invested
for the use and benefit of said minors”, and that the property was to be sold
by A.N. Spaulding MI26. A
probate order was issued on January 29, 1883 by Judge Orrin N. Hilton in the
village of Paw Paw, Michigan, which stated, “… in the
matter of the Estate of Cora Easton and Warren Easton, minors… the petition… of
A.N. Spaulding, guardian of said minors… that he may be licensed to sell
certain real estate belonging to said minors” PR10. A hearing for the petition was ordered on March 5, 1883 PR10. An advertisement dated March 9, 1883 appeared in several consecutive weekly editions of The Hartford Day
Spring newspaper which alerted the public that A.N. Spaulding planned to
sell GU1:
to the highest bidder, at the front door
of the Court House in the village of Paw Paw… on the
twenty-first day of April, eighteen hundred and eighty-three at one o’clock in
the afternoon, all the right, title, and interest of the said Cora Easton and
Warren Easton, minors, in and to the following described real estate… The
south-east quarter of section twenty-one (21) in town three (3) south of range
sixteen (16) west in the county of Van Buren… subject to the dower interest of
Sarah M. Easton, widow of Sylvester G. Easton.
Acting as auctioneer, A.N.
Spaulding sold “all the estate right and interest of said minors Cora Easton
and Warren Easton of in and to the south east quarter of section twenty-one
(21) in town three (3) south of Range sixteen (16) west in the County of Van
Buren and state of Michigan to Adelbert W. Easton and
Wilber A. Easton for the sum of twelve hundred and eighty dollars ($1280)” on
April 21, 1883 MI26. On July 9, 1883,
A.N. Spaulding tendered his resignation as guardian of
the Easton minors MI26.
Cora
was twenty-two when she married, and she was the mother of nine children UN18. The oldest, Pearle, died as an infant, and the other seven
children were Leta, Warren Easton, Albert L., Viola Ruth, twin boys Merwin
Cephas and Erwin S., and Donald A. Disbrow. The gravestone for Pearle E. Disbrow, located in Thomas
Cemetery in Bangor, Van Buren County, Michigan, stated that she was the
daughter of Lavoysier and Cora Disbrow, and died on
May 14, 1890 at the age of one year, two months, and twenty days, which
indicates that she was born on February 24, 1889. A photo of her gravestone can
be located on the Find a Grave website. Leta
(Disbrow) Krieger was born on
February 15, 1891 MI20, MR10 in Bangor, Michigan MR10. Leta
Disbrow (whose parents’ names were listed in her marriage record as “L.W.” and
“Easton”) and George Krieger were married by A.H. Stoneman in St. Joseph,
Berrien County, Michigan on March 12, 1912 MI23.
She died just before
her eighty-second birthday on February 12, 1973 MI20, MR10 in Watervliet, Berrien County,
Michigan MI20.
Warren Easton Disbrow was born on June 4, 1893 MI6, US14 in Bangor, Van Buren County, Michigan
US14. Warren, the son of L. Disbrow and
Cora “Caston”, and Marjorie M. Conklin were married
by J.C. Mathews on June 24, 1919 in Hartford, Van Buren County, Michigan MI23. Their marriage record
also stated “In War Service against Germany, Berrien County, Michigan” MI23. Warren died at age ninety-five on
December 1, 1988 MI6. Albert
L. Disbrow, the son of Lavoysier Disbrow and Cora
Easton, was born on September 28, 1895 in Bangor Township, Michigan MI4. The record of his birth stated “L.A.
Disbrow”, a male child, was born to Lovoisier and
Cora Disbrow on September 28, 1895 MI1. Albert and Hazel Weston were married
by D.J. Good in Hartford, Van Buren County, Michigan on December 15, 1919 MI23. He died at age sixty-four on January
11, 1960 in Covert Township, Van Buren County, Michigan MI4.
Viola (Disbrow) Watkins was born on February 7, 1898 MI20, VI11 in Bangor, Michigan VI11. Viola Ruth Disbrow, the daughter of
L.W. Disbrow and Cora Easton, married Otto J. Watkins in a ceremony officiated
by Charles H. Kelsey on March 3, 1918 in Bangor, Van Buren County, Michigan MI23. She died on July 14, 1977 MI20, VI11 in Watervliet, Berrien County,
Michigan MI20. The
local newspaper noted on June 25, 1902 “Twin boys were born to Mr. and Mrs.
L.W. Disbrow, north of town, last week” HA18.
Merwin
Cephas Disbrow was born on June 16, 1902 MI6, WO1. Erwin S. Disbrow, the son of Lavoysier
Disbrow and Cora Easton, was born on June 16, 1902 IN20, and he
and Marie Petersen were married by Walter F. Lichstinn,
a Lutheran Pastor, on September 7, 1929 in Lake County, Indiana IN21. Erwin
died at St. Margaret Hospital in Hammond, Lake County, Indiana on December 11,
1977 of respiratory arrest due to an undifferentiated carcinoma located in the
lower lobe of his right lung, which had metastasized to his liver IN20.
Donald A. Disbrow was
born on September 24, 1906 MI20, TH12 and
was referred to as an “eight pound boy” who was “born
to Mr. and Mrs. Lovosier Disbrow” TH12. Donald A. Disbrow, the son of Lavoysier
W. Disbrow and Cora Easton, married Noriene E. Smith
on December 8, 1929 in a ceremony officiated by D. Stanley Coors in Kalamazoo,
Kalamazoo County, Michigan MI23. He
died on March 4, 1987 in St. Joseph, Berrien County, Michigan MI20.
Cora’s ninth
child has not yet been identified, and was not found in any census record, so
it is probable that this child did not survive infancy. Another child, Montesse Holly, was enumerated in the Disbrow household in
1910, and her relationship to Lavoisier was recorded as a granddaughter; she
was ten years old, and she was born in Ohio to a father who was born in
Michigan and a mother who was born in Pennsylvania. A decade earlier, at the
time of the 1900 census, Monteese Holly, who was born
in November 1899, lived with Henry and Alice Garmon,
and she was described as Henry’s step-granddaughter. The parents of this
individual, Montesse or Monteese
Holly, have not been identified.
Cora transferred
property in Berrien County to Albert Disbrow and his wife, probably during the
last week of July 1935, because it was reported in The News-Palladium of Benton Harbor on July 29, 1935 TH20. The notice has been transcribed below TH20:
Cora A. Disbrow to Albert Disbrow and wife
– Part of the NW¼ of Sec. 26, T3S [Township 3 South], R17W [Range 17 West],
commencing at the point where the E. line of Main St., and the S. line of Bluff
St. intersect, thence Sly [southerly] along the E. line of Main St. 200 feet,

before “200 feet” were illegible] 200 feet to Bluff St. thence Wly [westerly] along the S. line of Bluff St., 125 feet to

She died at age
eighty-two MR3,
MI5 on March 21, 1947 MR3 or March 22, 1947 MI5 in her son Albert’s home near Toquin, Van Buren County, Michigan MR3. Her funeral was held at 2:30pm at Calvin
Chapel, officiated by Reverend William Goltz, and she was buried at Maple Hill
Cemetery, Hartford, Van Buren County, Michigan MR3. An obituary in the Hartford Day
