James
Henry Padgett (Charles, Georgiaetta)
was born on November 1, 1875 in Michigan, according to his death certificate.
The 1880, 1900, and 1910 censuses, and his marriage record MI8 stated that he was born in Illinois, and the 1880 census revealed
his middle name. His 1916 marriage record indicated that he was born in Kewanee,
Illinois MI2, which is in Henry County. At the time of the 1900
census, he lived with the Cone family and worked as a farm laborer. Also
working for the Cone family at that time was a household servant named Hattie
Shapley, who may or may not have been related to him in some
fashion. James H. Padgett, age twenty-six, and Myrtle L. Hale, age
twenty-one, both of Coloma, Michigan, were married by Reverend Josiah N. Boyer
in Coloma, Berrien County, Michigan MI23 on
September 3, 1902 MI23, MI8.
Their marriage record stated that James was born in Illinois, was the son of
Charles Padgett, and his mother’s maiden name was Elzeo, and that Myrtle was born in Coloma, Michigan, was
the daughter of George W. Hale, and her mother’s maiden name was Dobbin MI23. Witnesses to the ceremony were Frank (whose surname may have
been Dum, Dunn, or Dune) and Harriet Boice MI23.
James
and his family moved to a farm he had purchased in Mancelona on November 26,
1909 ST29. James H. Padgett, age forty of Mancelona and the son of
Charles Padgett and Georgia Elzea, married Mrs. Pearl
Messer (who was twenty-three, born in Ohio, and was the daughter of Mr. Covert)
on June 13, 1916 in Mancelona, Antrim County, Michigan; the officiating
minister was Warren W. Lamport MI2. Although the handwriting of the transcriber was very poor, it appeared as though James stated that he was
born in Kewanee, Illinois MI2.
His Antrim
County death certificate stated that at the time of his death, he was married
to Pearl A. Padgett. The death certificate stated that he died at age forty-two
at 4:00pm on February 4, 1918 in Mancelona, Antrim County, Michigan. The cause
of death, while partially illegible or potentially misspelled, seems to have
been tuberculosis, as it may have been spelled “Turberculosis
Lung” or “Tubesculosis Lung”, from which he had been
ill for five and one-half years.

Myrtle L. Hale (George, Jane) was born on December 2,
1880 in Michigan, according to both her death certificate and her father’s
statement, which he wrote on a document for his pension record FE1. Her marriage record stated that she was
born in Coloma, Berrien County, Michigan MI8.
Myrtle was the mother of three known children, Mabel I., George M., and Dora
Elizabeth. Mabel I. (Padgett) Frary was born on April 6, 1904 MI20, WO1. Mabel Padgett, the
daughter of James Padgett and Myrtle Hale, married Marvin E. Frary in Watervliet, Berrien County, Michigan on June 21,
1924 MI8, MI23 in a
ceremony officiated by Arthur E. Gay MI23. She died on April 13, 1978 in Chelsea, Washtenaw County,
Michigan MI20.
George M. Padgett may have been born
on March 3, 1906 WO1,
but the Social Security Death Index stated that he was born on June 2, 1906 US26. His middle name was probably “Morris”,
because the marriage record for his daughter, Beverly Ann, stated that her
parents were George “Moris” Padgett and Vera Tyler MI23. George Padgett and Vera Tyler, both of
Watervliet, Berrien County, Michigan, were married by J.B. Smith, Justice of
the Peace, on July 31, 1925 in Covert, Van Buren County, Michigan MI23. Witnesses to the ceremony included
Raymond Saw and Merwin Disbrow MI23. George (thirty-three) and Vera (thirty) Padgett lived in
Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo County, Michigan in 1940 with their children, Carol,
James, Beverly, Dicky, and Robert UN18, and they lived in Kalamazoo in 1942 and 1960 US17. He died in Kalamazoo in March 1966 US26. Dora Elizabeth Padgett was born on March 17, 1909 US26, MR7, WO1 in Covert Township, Van
Buren County, Michigan MR7, WO1. According to Norine Wolfe, two of her children, George and Mabel, in addition to six of her grandchildren,
died from pulmonary fibrosis WO1.
As
stated on her Antrim County death certificate, she died at age thirty-two of
myocarditis, with typhoid as a
contributing factor. Her death occurred on October 28, 1913 in Mancelona,
Antrim County, Michigan and she was buried in
Mancelona on October 31, 1913. A different version of a death record for Myrtle
L. Padgett, the daughter of George W. Hale and Jane E. Dobbyn, stated that she
died on October 27, 1913 in Antrim County MI4.
