Daniel
Bishop was
born about 1734 VE12 or 1735 RA6, GA3 in Rhode Island RA6. A birth record for Daniel Bishop, who
was the son of Daniel and Elizabeth (Brown) Bishop, stated that this particular Daniel Bishop was born on June 19, 1737 MA26. It is unclear whether Daniel and
Elizabeth (Brown) Bishop were the parents of Daniel, the subject of this
biographical sketch; the marriage of Daniel Bishop and Elizabeth Brown occurred
on January 30, 1734, and in addition to their son, Daniel, they were the
parents of Jemime, born in 1739, Bethiah,
born in 1741, Comfort, born in 1743, and Timothy, born in 1746 MA26. Jemime was probably the Jemima Bishop who
married Abraham Walker on November 12, 1761 in Rehoboth, Massachusetts AR4. The marriage and birth records for Daniel and Elizabeth and their
children were written in the Attleboro, Massachusetts record book, and so this
Bishop family may not have been the family of Daniel Bishop because one source alleged he was from Rhode Island RA6.
Daniel married
Betsey Bowen RA6. A record of intent of marriage for Betty
Bowen and Daniel Bishop, both of whom were of Rehoboth, was dated on March 8,
1759, and they were married by Daniel Carpenter, Esquire, in Rehoboth, Bristol
County, Massachusetts on March 29, 1759 AR4.
Daniel
Bishop was listed on “The Fifth List of The Town Rate” for Rehoboth, Bristol County,
Massachusetts on November 5, 1759; he was eight pence for real estate and
nothing for his personal estate by Nathaniell Bliss,
Samuel Bullock, and Timothy Walker, who were the assessors for Rehoboth BO33. This tax list indicated that he was the only voter in his
household BO33. At the time of the 1790 census, Daniel Bishop and Daniel Bishop,
Jr. lived in Williston, Vermont, the same town as Robert Whitcomb. On December
30, 1793, Daniel Bishop was listed as a member of the Protestant Episcopal
Church in Shelburne, Vermont GA3,
which is about ten miles southwest of Williston. He may have relocated by the
year 1795, for in that year and until 1800, he was a highway surveyor for
Richmond, Vermont, and in 1800, he was a school commissioner for that town GA3. The 1800 census recorded that Daniel Bishop resided in Richmond,
Vermont, the same town that both Benjamin Bishop and Robert Whitcomb called
home in 1800. At some point, Daniel’s namesake, Daniel
Jr., probably moved to the nearby town of Hinesburg, Chittenden County,
Vermont, as a growing family was recorded there in 1800, 1810, and 1820, while
the elder Daniel remained in Richmond.
Daniel was said to
have died in April 1824 RA6, but
the death record for Daniel Bishop, who had been married to “Betty” Bishop,
stated that he died on April 18, 1821 at age eighty-seven, and was buried in
Richmond Village Cemetery VE12. A photograph (located on the Find a
Grave website) of a gravestone for Daniel Bishop, located in Richmond
Village Cemetery in Richmond, Vermont, stated “In memory of Daniel Bishop who
died April 18th D [perhaps AD] 1821 in the 87th year of his age”.

Bettey Bowen (Uriel, Elizabeth) was said to have been born
in 1736 RA6 but the notation of her birth in the Rehoboth, Bristol County, Massachusetts
records stated that Bettey Bowen was born on April
30, 1737 to Uriel and Elizabeth Bowen AR4. She
was of Rehoboth, Massachusetts at the time of her marriage AR4. Betty Bishop was mentioned in her mother’s will, dated August
20, 1778 MA64. Betsey was the mother of ten known children, Berthia,
Betsey, Daniel Jr., Tamer, who died young, Comfort, Mary, Benjamin, Tamer, Abeleana, and Amos RA6.
Berthia Bishop may
have been the Bethiah Bishop of Swanzey,
New Hampshire who married Ezekiel Kellogg of on November 6, 1783 in Swanzey, Cheshire County, New Hampshire SW2. Betsey Bishop may
have been the Betty Bishop of Swanzey, New Hampshire
who married Thomas Whitcomb of Swanzey on September
19, 1781 in Swanzey, Cheshire County, New Hampshire SW2.
Daniel Bowen Bishop, who
was their third child, was born in March 1764 GA3 or about 1764 VE12. Daniel
Bishop, Jr. of Swanzey, New Hampshire married Edith
Steele on December 20, 1787 in Swanzey, Cheshire
County, New Hampshire NE10, SW2.
Daniel Bishop, whose wife was Edith, died at age eighty on April 25, 1844 VE12. His will, dated March 16, 1843, named his wife, Fanny, sons Ephran and Rufus, daughters Dorothy Pelson,
Polly Fay, Roxana Miles, Irena Adams, and his deceased daughter, Betsy McGuing VE13.
His gravestone in Hill Cemetery, Richmond, Chittenden County, Vermont states
that he died on April 25, 1844 (a photo may be viewed on the Find a Grave website). His will was
presented to the Chittenden County Probate court on May 2, 1844 VE13.
Betty
Bishop, the wife of Daniel (elsewhere called Betsey RA6) died at age seventy-nine on June 26, 1815 and was buried in
the Village Cemetery in Richmond, Vermont VE12, RA6. A
gravestone located in Richmond Village Cemetery in Richmond, Chittenden County,
Vermont states “In memory of Betty Bishop wife of Daniel Bishop who died June
26th 1815 in … 79th
year of her age”; a photograph of this gravestone may be viewed on the Find a Grave website.
