Peter Montras (Harmen, Margaret) was said to have been born
in the home of his grandfather, Jan Harmse, near
Irvington, New York TA10, which is less than three miles
south of Tarrytown, Westchester County, New York. Petrus, the
son of Herman Montras and his wife Grietje, was
baptized on March 6, 1715 at the (Old)
Dutch Church of Sleepy Hollow, which was later called the First Reformed Church
of Tarrytown, in Westchester County, New York; sponsors or witnesses to
his baptism were Joseph Hiscock and Margrietje, his
wife CO2. Peter “Matross”
was named as one of the grandchildren of “John Harremse
in West Chester County on the Manor of phillipsborough”
in John Harremse’s will written on November 30, 1739
in which he bequeathed the division of his clothing, gun, and sword amongst his
grandsons NE36. As Pieter Montros,
he married Emmetje Anderzon
on December 30, 1740 in the Dutch Reformed Church in New York PU4. Peter died
sometime before 1790 TA10.
Emmetje Anderzon was the mother of Peter Montross and may have
also been the mother of six additional sons, named John, Scott, Joseph, Isaac,
James, and J.W. Montross TA10. Peter Montross was
probably born on May 27, 1742, perhaps near the village of Roslyn Harbor on
Long Island, New York TA10, MU5.
A gravestone for Scott
Montrose, formerly located at one of the two graveyards for the Brick
Presbyterian Church (which itself was formerly located on Beekman Street
between Nassau Street and Park Row in New York City) was, along with all the
other extant gravestones in those graveyards, relocated to Evergreen Cemetery RO29. This gravestone stated that Scott
Montross died at age twenty-one years and perhaps three months on September 21,
1768 RO29. Joseph Montross died as a
widower of “old age” at age one hundred in July 1849 in Queens, New York US7; death records from Hempstead, Long
Island stated that Joseph Montrose of “Rock.” (probably
Rockland Center, Long Island) died as a single individual at age ninety-nine on
July 21, 1849 CO27. Isaac Montross and Tama Betts had a marriage license issued on July 9, 1772 in
New York TU6. Isaac and Tama
were said to have been the parents of David Montross, who was born about 1780,
an unnamed daughter who was born about 1785 and who married William Treen of
Wallace, Nova Scotia, Benjamin Montross, who was born about 1790, and Martha
Ann Montross, who was born about 1792 TA10. Isaac died sometime after 1817 TA10. James Montross was said to have
died as a Loyalist soldier, perhaps of smallpox, on September 10, 1780 in or
near Bloomindale, New York TA10. J.W.
Montross was between aged sixty and seventy when he was enumerated in the
13th Ward of New York City in 1830 TA10.
