Thomas
Chase (Aquilla, Ann) was born on July 21 (or July 24
MA26), 1654 in Newbury, Essex County,
Massachusetts MA20,
CH2, DO12. Thomas was younger than twenty-one on
December 10, 1670 when his father wrote his will in which he mentioned his son TH27. He was a carpenter CH2, NO10, and he served in Captain Samuel Appleton’s Company BO2, CU7,
CH2
on August 27, 1675 CU7, CH2 during King Philip’s War, for which
he received three pounds and
eighteen shillings on December 10, 1675 BO2, CH2. There is a possibility that he may have been present amongst
Captain Lathrop’s men at the Muddy Brook Bridge conflict on September 18, 1675 CU7. Captain Lathrop and his men traveled to
Deerfield to secure a great quantity of wheat, which they threshed and loaded
into eighteen wagons, and next proceeded to deliver it to Hadley CU7. Along their trek, they noticed a
grapevine, and as they gathered the clusters of grapes, they were ambushed by a
vast number of Native American men, who overpowered the colonists, killing most
of them
and scattering the remainder CU7. On September 24, 1675, Captain Samuel
Appleton took command of one hundred men, a group which included Thomas Chase
and other men from Newbury CU7.
On
June 2, 1677, he purchased fourteen acres of land from Nicholas Woodman, which
had a boundary line of the country highway which led to Amesbury Ferry, in what is now Newburyport CH2. John Carroll Chase stated that this land
was just north of the intersection of Ferry Road and the road which leads to the
cemetery at Sawyer’s Hill, near the Artichoke River and Curzon’s Tide Mill CH2. These topographical features are present
on modern maps, and his land was probably north of Maudslay State Park, and
west or at the current location of Moseley Pines Park. In 1928, when John
Carroll Chase’s book was published, this parcel of land was part of an estate
which belonged to F.S. Moseley CH2.
Thomas married
Rebecca “Follinsby”
on November 22, 1677 in Newbury, Essex County, Massachusetts MA26, SA8, and he was twenty-four
in 1678, when he took the oath of allegiance to the king DO18, CU7,
CH2.
On March 31, 1679, Deacon
Abraham Merrill, who had that very same day been appointed as one of fifteen
tithing men in Newbury, received a notice from the selectmen of the town, which
stated that he was required to “have inspection into and look over these
families that they attend the publick worship of God, and do not break the
Sabbath” CU7. The families he was directed to inspect
were those of Edward Woodman, Jr., Samuel Bartlet, Richard Bartlet, Abel
Pilsbury, John Stevens, Christopher Bartlet, Thomas Chase, Goodman Bailey, and
John Chase CU7.
The tax record of
August 1688 demonstrated that he owned a house, eight acres of ploughland, one
acre of meadow, one horse, three cows, two cows which were two years old, one
cow which was a yearling, eight sheep, and three hogs CU7, CH2. Because he served under Captain Appleton
in 1675 and 1676, in January 1701/2 he petitioned for a land grant; he and ten
other men of Newbury requested what had been promised them when they were about
to march to Narragansett CH2, CU7.
They were told that if they “played the man” and defeated the enemy, they would
“have a gratuity of land, besides their wages”, but unfortunately, the
government for whom they fought was not forthcoming with this land, and both
Thomas and Jonathan Emery, another claimant, died before the land grants were
distributed, which was sometime after February 22, 1733/4, when the plans were
finally approved by the governor CU7.
A tiny section of the commonage along the Merrimack, just seven feet, six
inches, was granted to Thomas “Chace” on March 9, 1707/8 PR11. On November 2, 1711, he bought the
homestead of his father-in-law, Thomas Follansbee, located in Newbury, and on
April 2, 1713, he sold that property to Aquila, his son CH2.
After
the death of Rebecca, he married Elizabeth Moores in Newbury on August 2 SA8, CH2, NO10, 1714 NO10; the intent of their marriage was posted on July 24, 1714 MA26. Thomas and Elizabeth were the parents of Elizabeth Chase. Elisabeth
Chase, the daughter of Thomas and Elisabeth, was born on July 9, 1715
in Newbury, Essex County, Massachusetts VI28.
Lizza Chase was mentioned in her father’s will dated on August 3, 1732 ES6. Lizzee Chase married Benjamin Rogers on August 17, 1732 in
Newbury, Essex County, Massachusetts VI6. Leze
and Benjamin Rogers were the parents of seven children whose births were
recorded in Newbury, Essex County, Massachusetts VI28. These were Mary, born in February 1735 and baptized on
February 8, 1735/6, Benjamin, born on March 31, 1739, Thomas, born on August
14, 1741, Eliphalet, born on October 27, 1745, Leze, born on January 22, 1747,
Sarah, born on January 20, 1750, and Chase, born on May 20, 1752 VI28.
Thomas wrote his
will on August 3, 1732, which was witnessed by Joseph Coffin, William
Goodridge, and Nathanael Coffin, and he died sometime before February 25, 1733,
which was the date his will was proved ES6, CH2, NO10. A transcription of his
