Robert
Hodson (George, Mary) was born on the 11th
day of the 3rd month, 1738 (likely May 11, 1738), according
to the records of the Center Monthly Meeting in Guilford County, North Carolina
US11. Robert Hodson married Rachel HI4. His marriage to
Rachel Mills was not recorded, but occurred about 1758 in Guilford County,
North Carolina BJ2. He was probably the Robert “Hodgson” who received
membership by request at the New Garden Monthly Meeting in Guilford County,
North Carolina on June 26, 1756 HI4. Robert Hodgson was mentioned in the will
of his father, dated June 5, 1764 NO6.
After the death of his wife, Rachel (Mills) Hodson, who died in 1791, Robert
Hodgson remarried to another individual named Rachel Mills on February 6, 1794 US11. Robert Hodgson, the son of George and
Mary Hodgson, deceased of Guilford County, married Rachel Mills, the daughter
of Hur and Rachel Mills, deceased of Guilford County on the 6th day of the 2nd month, 1794 at a meeting held at Dover
in Guilford County, North Carolina US11. Amongst the twelve witnesses to this ceremony was Mary Mills
and Nathan Mills US11.
Nathan,
who was his first son with his first wife, died a few months later
on May 21, 1794, and one year after Nathan’s death, Robert’s second
wife, Rachel, gave birth to their first child, whom they also named Nathan HI4. The records of the Center Monthly
Meeting in Guilford County, North Carolina state that Robert and Rachel Hodson
were the parents of Nathan Hodson, who died on the 10th day of the 4th month, 1801 US11.
With his second wife, Robert was also the father of Hur
Hodson, born on September 18, 1796 HI4. The records of the Center Monthly Meeting in Guilford County,
North Carolina state that Hur Hodson of Guilford County, the son of Robert and
Rachel Hodson (deceased), married Elizabeth Peirson, the daughter of Samuel and
Phebe Peirson of Roan (Rowan) County on the 31st day of the 8th
month, 1814 at the Concord Meetinghouse US11. The
Cherry Grove Monthly Meeting in Randolph County, Indiana recorded the births of
nine children who were born to Hur and Elizabeth Hodson US11. These were Jesse, born on the 30th day of the 6th
month, 1815, Robert, born on the 18th day
of the 12th month, 1816, Sarah, born on the 30th day of the 9th
month, 1818, Matthew, born on the 16th day
of the 1st month, 1821 (who died on the 17th day of the 2nd
month, 1829), Eunice, born on the 6th day
of the 11th month, 1822, Jabez, born on the 29th day of the 12th
month, 1824, Phebe, born on the 13th day
of the 1st month, 1827 (who died on the 2nd day of the 1st
month, 1836), Rachel, born on the 10th day
of the 2nd month, 1828, and Martha, born on the 31st day of the 10th
month, 1830 US11. The records of the Cherry
Grove Monthly Meeting in Randolph County, Indiana state that Hur Hodson died at
age thirty-seven years, ten months, and four days on the 22nd day of the 7th
month, 1834 and was buried at Lynn US11.
The
records of the Center Monthly Meeting in Guilford County, North Carolina state
that Robert and Rachel Hodson were the parents of Sarah Hodson, who was
born on the 10th day of the 3rd month, 1798 US11. Rachel,
his second wife, died on July 24, 1811 HI4. The
records of the Springfield Monthly Meeting in Guilford County, North Carolina
state that Robert Hodson of Guilford County married Sarah Person of Randolph
County on the 3rd day of the 10th month, 1812 at the Springfield Monthly Meeting in a ceremony
witnessed by Nathan Mendenhall, Henry Hayworth, Jesse Hodson, Robert Hodson,
Jr., Thomas Person, and others US11.
He wrote his will on April 7, 1813, which was witnessed
by Thomas Swain and Paul Bears, and proved in May 1813 in court at Guilford
County, North Carolina NO6. Robert Hodson died on the 12th day of
the 4th month,
1813 (April 12, 1813) US11, HI4. A
transcription of his will follows NO6:
I Robert Hodson of the county of Guilford and State
of North Carolina being under indisposition of body but of sound mind &
memory & knowing the uncertainty of time do make and ordain this my last
will and testament in the manner following, to wit.
Item – It is my will that all my just debts be paid as
soon as may be by my Executor hearafter appointed.
Item – I give to my sons namely Richard, Jonathan, David,
Thomas, Robert and Jesse the sum of five shillings
each to their use and benefit.
Item – I give to my five daughters namely Elizabeth,
Rachel, Rebecca, Mary and Martha the sum of five
shillings each for their use & benefit.
Item – I give to my beloved wife Sarah all the property
which I obtained with to be at her disposal forever and while she continues to
live where I now do [the previous word, “do”, was uncertain, because the letter
“o” was unlike the others written in this will, when it was written as the
final letter of the word] she shall be entitled to my house and one third of
the proceeds of my land and stock while she remains to be my widdow – the
remaining two thirds of the increase of my land and stock I give to my son hur
& daughter Sarah for their use & support and should my daughter Sarah
marry it is my will for her to have one third of the stock which there may be
at that periord forever and the ballance I give to my son Hur together with the
land & tenements at the end of my wife’s widdowhood – and I further give to
my son Hur my clock and all my farming utencils and Smith tools and one bed and
furniture and 2 iron pots & an oven and my rifle gunn and I further give to
my daughter Sarah the remainder of my household furniture and one side saddle
And lastly I appoint my wife Sarah & William Harvey
Executors of this my last will & Testament revoking all others heretofore
made signed in the presents of us this 7th of
the 4th mo., 1813.
Rachel Mills (Thomas, Elizabeth) was the mother of Nathan, Richard,
Jonathan, David, Thomas, Robert, Jesse, Elizabeth, Rachel, Rebecca, another
Rebecca, Mary, and Martha HI4. Nathan Hodson was born on March 10, 1759 HI4, US11. The
records of the Center Monthly Meeting in Guilford County, North Carolina state
that Nathan Hodgson, the son of Robert and Rachel Hodgson, died on the 21st day of the 5th
month, 1794 US11; his age at the time
of his death was thirty-five.
Richard Hodson was born on December 30, 1761 HI4, US11. He
may have been the Richard Hodgson who likely married Elizabeth, with whom they
were likely the parents of Reuben, Hannah, Rachel, Rebeckah, Mary, and Levica.
This is indicated by the records of the Springfield Monthly Meeting, which
state that on the 5th of
the 3rd month, 1796, Richard Hodgson and his son, Reuben, as well as
Elizabeth Hodgson and her daughters, Hannah, Rachel, and Rebeckah, were
received at the Springfield Meeting on certificates from the Center Monthly
Meeting which were both dated the 19th day
of the 12th month, 1795 HI4.
Then on the 6th day of the 4th month, 1805, the Springfield Monthly Meeting issued
certificates for the Mount Pleasant Monthly Meeting to both Richard Hodgson and
his family and to Elizabeth Hodgson and her daughters, Hannah, Rachel, Rebekah,
Mary, and Levica HI4.
Jonathan Hodson was born on October 16, 1763 HI4, US11. He
married Mary Frazier, the daughter of Aaron and Sarah (Osborn) Frazier, on
October 1, 1789 US11. Jonathan and Mary
Hodson were the parents of Enos, born on the 23rd day of the 9th
month, 1790, Rachel, born on the 17th day
of the 1st month, 1793 and died on the 30th day of the 7th
month, 1794, and Sarah, born on the 17th day
of the 5th month, 1800 US11.
David Hodson, the son of Robert and Rachel Hodson, married Esther
Lamb, the daughter of Robert and Rachel Lamb, on November 27, 1788 HI4, US11. They were the parents of Rachel, born
on February 21, 1790, Achsah, born on October 8, 1791, Margaret, born on July
30, 1793, David, born on March 23, 1802, Simeon, born on April 27, 1804,
Esther, born on November 2, 1807 and Elizabeth, born on November 22, 1810 US11. There may have been three additional children born during the
years 1793 and 1802. David died at age fifty-one years and three days on March
11, 1816, according to the Center Monthly Meeting records US11; his age at the time of his death implies that he was born
about 1765, and possibly on March 8, 1765.
The
records of the Center Monthly Meeting in Guilford County, North Carolina state
that Thomas Hodson, the son of Robert
and Rachel Hodson, was born on the 26th day
of the 2nd month, 1767 HI4, US11. The Pleasant Plain Monthly Meeting records
stated that Thomas Hodson was born on February 26, 1769 in North Carolina (this
may have been a typographical error) and he married Ruth US21. He may have married Ruth
Montgomery in Guilford County, North Carolina on May 17, 1796 NO15. They were the parents
of Sarah, born on July 13, 1804, and Annual, born on November 26, 1808 US21. Thomas died on April 14, 1847, according to
the Pleasant Plain Monthly Meeting (located in Iowa) records US21.
The
records of the Center Monthly Meeting in Guilford County, North Carolina state
that Robert Hodson, the son of
Robert and Rachel Hodson, was born on the 31st day
of the 3rd month, 1769 HI4, US11.
Robert, the son of Robert and Rachel (Mills) Hodson, married Isabel Frazier,
the daughter of Aaron and Sarah Frazier, on September 1, 1791 US11. Robert Hodson of Guilford County, North Carolina wrote his
will on March 8, 1844, which named his wife, Isabel, his sons, John, Eli,
Jesse, Aaron, Isaac, Robert, Jonathan, and David, and his daughters, Mary Poe
(or Pore), Rebecca Harlen, and Sarah Thompson NO16. Robert died about the
age of seventy-five years on March 16, 1844 US11.
The
records of the Center Monthly Meeting in Guilford County, North Carolina state
that Jesse Hodson, the son of Robert
and Rachel Hodson, was born on the 13th day
of the 9th month, 1771; a different record states his birth occurred on
the 7th day of the 9th month,
1770 US11. Jesse, the son of Robert and Rachel (Mills) Hodson, married
Mary Wilson, the daughter of Jeremiah and Elizabeth Wilson, on January 11, 1794
US11. The records of the Center Monthly Meeting in Guilford County,
North Carolina state that Jesse and Mary Hodson were the parents of Robert, born
on the 7th day of the 1st
month, 1797, and Jesse, born on 1st day
of the 6th month, 1799 US11.
Jesse Hodson, the son of Robert and Rachel Hodson, died at age sixty-five
years, eight months, and twenty-four days on June 7, 1837 in Hendricks County,
Indiana, and was buried in Spring Friends Cemetery in Hendricks County US11. His gravestone, located at Spring Friends Cemetery in
Springtown, Hendricks County, Indiana, states that he died at the age of sixty-seven
years, eight months, and twenty-one days on June 7, 1837 (a photo may be
located on the Find a Grave website).
The
records of the Center Monthly Meeting in Guilford County, North Carolina state
that Elizabeth Hodson, the daughter of Robert and Rachel Hodson,
was born on the 13th day
of the 6th month, 1772 HI4, US11. Elizabeth Hodson, the daughter of Robert and Rachel
(Mills) Hodson, married Jesse Osborn, the son of Samuel and Elizabeth, on
October 10, 1793, according to the Center Monthly Meeting
records US11. Elizabeth
and Jesse may have been the parents of Jesse and Charles Osborn, who were
called sons of Jesse and Elizabeth Osborn; Jesse was born on June 1, 1804 in
Randolph County, North Carolina, and Charles died at age fifty-nine years, nine
months, and fourteen days on July 6, 1871 at Mill Creek, Hendricks County,
Indiana (implying a birth year of 1811) US11.
The records
of the Center Monthly Meeting in Guilford County, North Carolina state that Rachel Hodson, the daughter of Robert and Rachel Hodson, was born on the 13th day of the 5th
month, 1774 HI4, US11.
Rachel, the daughter of Robert and Rachel (Mills) Hodson, married John Williams
on November 26, 1800, according to the Center Monthly Meeting records of
Guilford County, North Carolina US11.
Rachel and John Williams were called the parents of Isaac, Robert, Rachel,
Rebecca, Dinah, and Elizabeth Williams US21. John
Williams, the son of John Williams and Rachel (Hodson) Williams, was said to
have been born in Orange County, Indiana on December 28, 1817 AM4. Rachel Williams, age seventy-six and born in North Carolina,
lived in the household of Robert (age forty-five; born in North Carolina) and
Mary Williams, and next to the household of John (age thirty-three and also born in North Carolina) and Anna Williams in Paoli,
Orange County, Indiana in 1850 UN10. Her
gravestone at Beech Grove Cemetery in Paoli, Orange County, Indiana states that
Rachel, the wife of John Williams, was born on June 18, 1774 and died on July
14, 1855 (a photo can be found on the Find
a Grave website).
The
records of the Center Monthly Meeting in Guilford County, North Carolina state
that Rebecca Hodson, the daughter of Robert and Rachel Hodson,
was born on the 25th day
of the 4th month, 1776 and died at the age of eleven months on the 8th day of the 3rd
month, 1777; she was buried the following day in the Friends’ Burying Ground at
or near the Center Meetinghouse US11, HI4.
The
records of the Center Monthly Meeting in Guilford County, North Carolina state
that Rebecca Hodgson, the daughter of Robert and Rachel Hodgson,
was born on the 11th day
of the 1st month, 1778 US11. Rebecca
(or Rebeccah), the daughter of Robert Hodson and Rachel (Mills) Hodson, married
Abel Frazier (or Fraizer) of Center in Guilford County, the son of Aaron and
Sarah (Osborn) Frazier (or Fraizer, who were both deceased), on the 2nd day of the 12th
month, 1801, according to the records of the Center Monthly Meeting in Guilford
County, North Carolina US11. This
marriage record stated that Rachel, Rebeccah’s mother, was deceased US11.
The
records of the Center Monthly Meeting in Guilford County, North Carolina state
that Mary Hodgson, the daughter of Robert and Rachel Hodgson,
was born on 19th day of the 3rd month, 1780 US11, US21.
Mary, the daughter of Robert and Rachel (Mills) Hodson, married Matthew
Frazier, the son of Aaron and Sarah (Osborn) Frazier, on November 26, 1800,
according to the records of the Center Monthly Meeting in Guilford County,
North Carolina US11. Mary Frazier, age
seventy (born about 1780 in North Carolina) was enumerated in the household of
Jonathan (age forty-eight and born in North Carolina) and Agga Frazier in
Paoli, Orange County, Indiana in 1850 UN10; at
age eighty-one, she was again a member of the household of Jonathan
(fifty-nine) and Aggie Frazier in Paoli in 1860 UN11. Mary Frazier died at age eighty-eight years and eleven months
on February 19, 1869 and was buried in the Newberry Friends Cemetery US21.
The
records of the Center Monthly Meeting in Guilford County, North Carolina state
that Martha Hodgson, the daughter of Robert and Rachel Hodgson,
was born on the 23rd day
of the 4th month, 1785 US11. The December 1803 marriage record of Martha Hodson and
Abraham Osborn stated that Martha’s parents were Robert and Rachel (Mills)
Hodson US11.
Rachel
died on April 24, 1791, and she was buried on April 26, 1791, according to the
Center Monthly Meeting records HI4.
