Daniel
Curtis was
born circa 1813 in Illinois UN11 or
about 1814 in Indiana UN10. He
may have been the Daniel Curtis who resided in Wabash County, Illinois at the
time of the 1840 census, with one girl under the age of five, two girls of five
but younger than ten, and one woman of twenty but younger than thirty UN9. In 1850, Daniel was a planter who lived
next door to a man named Augustus Curtis and his family, who was probably a
relative or brother (Augustus was born one year after Daniel). By 1860, Daniel
had changed professions, and was a house carpenter. He probably died sometime between
June 21, 1860, when he was enumerated in Bollinger County, and July 22, 1870,
the date of the enumeration of his wife and daughters during the 1870 census,
in which his name was absent.
·
1850 US Census: lived in Pulaski County, Illinois.
·
1860 US Census: lived in Liberty Township, Bollinger County,
Missouri.
Mary was
born in January 1812 in Indiana UN14,
or about 1813 in Illinois UN11, UN12
or 1813 or 1814 in Indiana UN10, UN13
to parents who were both born in Indiana UN13, UN14. Mary was the mother
of Jane, Catharene, Jacob, Augustus, Rebecca A.,
Narcissa, Sarah, and Stephen. At the time of the 1900 census, she stated that
she was the mother of eleven children, of whom six were alive UN14.
Jane
Curtis was
born in Illinois about 1837 UN10. She
may have been “Nancy Jane”, the twenty-four-year-old wife of Willis B.
Williams, who lived with their two-year-old son, Daniel M. Williams, in Pulaski
County, Illinois in 1860 UN11.
This Nancy was born about 1836 in Illinois UN11, UN13. Nancy and “Willice”
Williams lived in Pulaski County, Illinois in 1870 UN12, but in Unity Township, Alexander
County, Illinois in 1880 UN13. If
Jane Curtis was the same person as Nancy Jane Williams, then she was also
probably the Mrs. Nancy J. Williams who married Jerry
M. Whitlock on February 6, 1886 in Alexander County, Illinois AL7. Mrs. Nancy J.
Williams was forty-one and was of Hodges Park in Alexander County, and Jerry M.
Whitlock was forty-seven and was of Elco, Alexander
County AL7.
This Jerry Whitlock may have been Jeremiah M. Whitlock, who was probably
related to Sabrina (Whitlock) Sims (see above). J.M. and N.J. Whitlock lived in
Elco, Alexander County in 1900; J.M was born in
December 1838, and N.J. was born in July 1834 UN14.
Catharene Curtis was born in Illinois about 1838 UN10. Jacob
Curtis was born in Illinois about 1840 UN10 or 1841 UN11. Jacob may have been the Jacob Curtis,
age twenty-four, who married Mary “Sents”, age
twenty-two, on February 20, 1865 in Saint Louis, Missouri MI15. The 1870 US Census recorded that Jacob
and Mary Curtis lived in St. Francois County, Missouri with their children, Henry and Lilly; this Jacob was born about 1841 in Illinois UN12. In 1880, Jacob and Mary’s children
included Henry, Lillie, Nancy, William, Edward, and Helen M., and they lived with
two of Mary’s sisters UN13.
The recorded name of Jacob’s sister-in-law, Helen Suits, indicates that his
wife’s maiden name was perhaps “Suits”, rather than “Sents” UN13.
This Jacob Curtis was born in September 1846 in Illinois (as recorded in the
1900 US Census when he lived in Lamont, Grant County, Oklahoma) UN14, and he died on October 7, 1927 in
Blackwell, Kay County, Oklahoma KA6. His gravestone at Blackwell Cemetery in Blackwell, Kay
County (a photo of which can be found on the Find a Grave website) stated that he was born on September 10,
1840. It is unclear if the Jacob Curtis who married Mary Suits/Sents and died in Kay County in 1927 is the same Jacob
Curtis who was the son of Daniel and Mary Curtis.
Augustus
Curtis was
born about 1842 in Illinois UN10, or
about 1843 in Missouri UN11, UN14
(December 1843 UN14),
or about 1844 in Missouri UN12.
Augustus Curtis married Martha A. Smith on March 8, 1866 in Madison County,
Missouri MI15.
Augustus, Martha, and their children lived in Ozark Township, Texas County,
Missouri in 1870 UN12 and
in 1876, they lived in Texas County next to his mother, Mary Curtis, his
sisters, Rebeca Curtis, Margret Curtis, and Sarah Sims, and his brother-in-law,
F.M. Sims MI34. They
remained in Ozark Township in 1880 UN13,
but by 1900 they lived in Prairie Township, Washington County, Arkansas UN14. This census recorded simply that A.
Curtis was born in December 1843 in Missouri to parents who were born in
Illinois, and that he had been married to his wife, Mrs.
M.A. Curtis, for thirty-four years UN14.
Augustus and Martha A. Curtis lived in Fayetteville, Washington County,
Arkansas in 1910 UN15,
but he was a widower who lived with his daughter and her husband, Della and John Danner, in Prairie Township, Washington
County, Arkansas, in 1920 UN16. A
Texas County, Missouri death certificate for “Gus Curtis” stated that he died
of mitral insufficiency on April 7, 1928 in Cabool, Texas County at the age of
“about 85”; his date of birth was unknown, as was his birthplace and the names
of his parents. The death certificate stated that he was buried at Hamilton
Cemetery. Cabool is about twenty-two miles southwest of Ozark Township.
Rebecca
A. Curtis was
born in Missouri UN10, UN11, UN13 or Illinois UN12, UN14 in September
1843 UN14, about
1844 UN10,
1845 UN12, 1846
UN13, or
1847 UN11. Rebecca A. Curtis married Joseph W.
Patterson on January 2, 1880 in Texas County, Missouri MI15, and the 1880 census enumerator for Ozark Township, Texas County
recorded Joseph and Beckey A. Patterson just before
the names of Augustus Curtis and his wife, Martha Curtis UN13. In 1880, Joseph and Beckey lived with Angeline Curtis, who was described at
Joseph’s eight-year-old stepdaughter UN13. In
1900, Joseph and Rebecca A. Patterson lived in Big Creek Township, Fulton
County, Arkansas with Mary Curtis, who was called Joseph’s mother-in-law UN14.
Narcissa was born about 1847 UN12 or 1848 UN10, UN11, UN13 in Illinois UN10, UN12, UN13 or Missouri UN11. Narcissa’s full name was Narcissa Amanda Curtis. Amanda Curtis married James Richard Skaggs
on September 1, 1867 in Madison County, Missouri MI15. In 1870, James and Narcissa A. Skaggs
resided with their one-year-old son, Thomas J. Skaggs, next to Mary, Rebecca,
and Sarah Curtis in Twelvemile, Missouri UN12. James Skaggs had died by July 25, 1875, when
on that date, Amanda Skaggs married Hiram Hurst in Madison County, Missouri MI15. Amanda, Hiram, and their three children
lived with Mary Curtis in Texas County, Missouri in 1880 UN13.
Sarah and Stephen were born about 1853 UN12 or 1854 UN11 in Illinois UN12 or Missouri UN11. Sarah and Stephen, who were both six
years old in 1860, were undoubtedly twins. Sarah
L. Curtis was
born about 1851 in Missouri UN17,
1853 in Illinois UN12, UN14, UN16,
or circa 1854 in Missouri UN11.
At the time of the 1876 Missouri census,
Mary was older than forty-five years of age, and her name was written directly
above the names of Rebeca Curtis, who was between the ages of twenty-one and
forty-five, Margret Curtis, who was younger than ten, and F.M. Sims MI34. Mary Curtis was called the widowed
mother-in-law of Hiram Hurst in 1880, when she lived with Hiram and Amanda
Hurst’s family in Cass Township, Texas County, Missouri UN13, and in 1900, she was described as the
widowed mother-in-law of Joseph W. Patterson when she lived with Joseph and
Rebecca A. Patterson in Big Creek Township, Fulton County, Arkansas UN14. In 1900, she stated that she was able to read, but unable
to write. Mary was eighty-eight in 1900, and she probably died soon after that
census occurred.
