Edward Emery, Sr. (Josiah, Abigail) was born in Vermont on April
7, in approximately the year 1790, according to a short autobiography of his
son, Josiah Emery BA8.
Mary and Sarah Emery, his daughters, and Edward Emery, his son, reported on the
1880 census that their father was born in Vermont. The 1850 census reported
that Edward was born circa 1792 in New Hampshire UN10, and his birth record stated that he was
born on April 7, 1792 in Fishersfield, Hillsborough
County, New Hampshire (now called Newbury in Merrimack County), and named his parents as Josiah and
Abigail Emery NE9, NE11. Edward’s parents did relocate to Ludlow, Windsor
County, Vermont sometime between 1800 and 1810, when Edward was a boy.
He served for five
years during and after the War of 1812 BA8, WA13,
and sustained an injury to his left arm, for which he received a
pension BA8.
Edward was described as a farmer who was born in Fishersfield,
New Hampshire, who was five feet, ten and a half inches tall, with black hair
and eyes and a dark complexion, when he enlisted as a private in the U.S.
Artillery at the age of twenty-one on June 27, 1812 US1. He was under the command of Captain G.H.
Richards US1.
During his five-year term of service, he also served under Captain Brooks and
Captain S. Churchill; he was appointed as a corporal on March 1, 1816, and then
promoted to the rank of sergeant on June 11, 1817 US1. He was discharged one month later on July 5, 1817 because his term expired, and he had
been wounded in action US1.
His pension record listed the name of his widow, Julia Ann, his service as a
sergeant under Captain S. Churchill in the U.S. Artillery, the bounty land
number, WT 10234-160-12, and the various numbers pertaining to his pension (OWInv File 47359, OWWRej File
13991, WO 17987, and WC 19020) WA10.
He received a monthly allowance of four dollars as his pension US9.
Edward Emery married “Kelia
Freed” on July 27, 1826 in Crawford County,
Indiana IN6, RI7; the name Kelia was probably a
transcription error. He was not enumerated in Crawford County, Indiana during
the 1830 census. Edward purchased forty acres of land in Washington County,
Indiana on September 1, 1838 GE4, located of south of a line of what is
now called East Purlee Road BO17. Between the years of 1844 and 1852,
Edward’s name was found on the Poll Lists for Jackson Township, Washington
County, Indiana CO12.
Edward and Julia may have moved to Pierce Township, Washington County, Indiana
in 1853, as his name was located on the Poll Lists for that township in the
years of 1854 through 1856 CO12.
Edward Emery died on
May 9, 1857 WA13, BA8. According to the Find A
Grave website, Edward Emery, Sr. was buried in Big Spring Church of Christ
Cemetery in Pekin, Indiana.

Julia
Ann Freed was
referred to as “Julie A.” or “Julianna” Emery, depending upon which census
record is examined. She was born about 1807 in Kentucky UN10, UN11 or in 1808, as she was seventy-two in
1880 UN13. In the 1880 census, she stated that her
father was born in Pennsylvania and her mother was born in Virginia. Julia may
have been the sister of Samuel Fred/Fread and Sampson
Freed, two men who were enumerated in 1850 and 1860 and reported that they were
born in Kentucky; Samuel was born about 1795 or 1800, and Sampson was born
about 1803 or 1804. Samuel Fread lived in Highland
Township, Franklin County, Indiana during both census years. Sampson Freed
lived in Johnson County, Arkansas at the time of the 1850 and 1860 censuses,
and he in particular was probably a brother of Julia,
for her first son was named Sampson.
She
was the mother ten children who were born in Indiana: Samson D., John C., Edward,
Mary A., Josiah, Sarah M., Eliza J., Robert B., Amelia E., and Cyrus F. Emery UN10. Sampson
D. Emery was born in Washington County, Indiana in 1827 BO3, UN10. His obituary stated that Sampson
D. Emery was born on June 12, 1827 in Washington County, Indiana, and he died
of paralysis on July 18, 1891 in Longview, Illinois BO21. He was probably twenty-eight-year-old Samson Emery who lived
in Wales, Erie County, New York with his wife, Margret and daughter, Julia, in
1855; this Samson’s stated birthplace was Indiana, and he was a wagon maker NE28. In 1860, Sampson D. Emery (a wagon maker), Margaret, and their
children lived in Pierce Township, Washington County, Indiana near “Juley” A. Emery
UN11. In 1870, Sampson Emery, a
blacksmith born about 1827 in Indiana, lived in Pierce Township,
Washington County, Indiana with his wife, Margaret (born about 1836 in New
York), and children, Julia Ann, John E., and nine-month-old twins, Albert and Alberta UN12.
They lived next door to Juliana Emery, who was born about 1807 in Kentucky UN12. He operated a wagon and blacksmith shop and relocated to
Illinois in 1873, and he was called the oldest brother of Josiah Emery BO21. Sampson D. Emery married Mary L. Shepherd in Champaign County,
Illinois in 1877 IL1. In 1880, “Samuel”
and Mary Emery lived in Raymond, Champaign County, Illinois with John, Alberta,
four-year-old George, one-year-old James, and six-year-old Elmer Blair, who was
Mary’s son UN13. It is probable that Alberta’s twin brother had died, because
he was not listed with the family.
John C. Emery was born about 1829 in Indiana UN10 or in August 1829 WA13. Edward
Emery, Jr. was born in August 1830 in Indiana UN14. Mary
Anna Emery was born about 1834 in Indiana UN10, UN12, UN12, UN13.
She lived with her mother and siblings in 1850, 1860, 1870, and 1880 UN10, UN11, UN12, UN13.
Josiah
Emery was born in Pierce Township
BA8 near Big Springs, Washington County,
Indiana in April 1836 WA13, BO3.
The obituary for Josiah
Emery stated that he was the son of Edward and Julia Fried Emery, and was born
on April 12, 1836 near Big Springs, Washington County, Indiana BO21. He married Mary Ann Overman on
December 13, 1860 and died at age eighty-five on August 29, 1921 BO21. His death certificate stated that he
was born in Indiana on April 12, 1836 to Edward Emery and Julia A. Freed, who
were both born in Pennsylvania, and that he died in Salem, Washington County,
Indiana on August 29, 1921 IN20.
His wife at the time of his death was Molly Emery IN20.
Sarah M. Emery was
born about 1839 UN10, UN11, UN13 or
1840 UN12 in Indiana UN10, UN11, UN12, UN13. She
lived with her mother and siblings in 1850, 1860, 1870, and 1880 UN10, UN11, UN12, UN13. Eliza
J. Emery was
born about 1841 in Indiana UN10, UN11, and she married Noah Pollard on April
20, 1862 in Washington County, Indiana IN21. Robert B. Emery was
born in August 1843 but died in January 1844 WA13. Amelia
E. Emery was born about 1845 in Indiana UN10, UN11, and she married James H. McCoskey on January 23, 1873 in Washington County, Indiana IN21. Syrus F. Emery (or
Cyrus F.) was born about 1850 UN10 or in
September 1849 WA13. He
lived in his mother’s household in 1870 UN12. A
gravestone for Syrus F. Emery located in Big Spring
Church of Christ Cemetery in Pekin, Washington County, Indiana stated that he
was born on September 22, 1849 and died on November 6, 1878 (a photo of the
gravestone can be found on the Find a
Grave website).
“Juley A. Emery”,
age fifty-three, still lived with six of her youngest children in 1860 UN11. “Julianna Emery”
lived with Mary Anna, Sarah, and Cyrus in 1870 UN12, and “Juliann”,
Mary, and Sarah resided together in 1880 UN13.
