Rufus Elzea was born about 1813 in
Connecticut, according to the 1850, 1860, and 1870 US census records, as well
as the 1855 and 1865 New York census records. He was alternately a farmer, a
laborer, or a farm laborer. His surname was spelled “Elsey” in the 1850 US
census, “Elzea” in the 1855 New York and the 1860 US census, and “Elza” in the
1865 New York Census and the 1870 US census. If the young woman named Catherine
Elzea who was enumerated with the Elzea household in 1850 was indeed the
daughter of Rufus, then, based on her estimated birth year, the marriage of
Rufus and Catherine may have occurred in about the year 1832.
The Elzea family lived in Manchester,
Ontario County, New York in 1850, and the 1865 NY census reported that their
home was constructed of logs. Because he resided in Manchester, Rufus was
probably related to William M. Elzea, who was born in June 1847 in Clifton
Springs, New York, and died in Hamlin, Mason County, Michigan in February 1934 WM1. Clifton Springs and Manchester are just
five miles apart, and this William was probably the William R. “Elza” who
was enumerated directly beneath the family of Rufus and Catherine in 1870 UN12.
Rufus died on May 10, 1875 in Michigan at age sixty-two EL4, LU2. According to his
burial card, Rufus died of an “epileptic fit”, and he was buried in Potter’s
Field at Lakeview Cemetery in Ludington, Michigan LU2.

Catherine A. Depew was
born about 1813 in New Jersey UN10, UN11, UN12, NE29, NE30. The 1865 New York census included the
name “(Depew)”, written within parentheses as shown, directly above her
surname. Additionally, this census recorded that she was the mother of nine
children, and had been married twice, while Rufus had only been married once,
to Catherine. It is
possible that her maiden name was Phillips, for the
death certificate for her son, William, stated that his mother’s name was
Kathleen Phillips, who was born in New York MI21.
Catherine was
probably the mother of the children who resided in the Elzea household during
the census years of 1850, 1855, 1860, 1865, and 1870. The names of her children
were Catherine, James P. DePew, Adelaide E. DePew, Lovica, William Rufus Elzea,
and Georgiatta Elzea. “Catharin Elsey”
was born about 1833 in New York UN10. She was not included with her parents in the 1855 New York
State Census. Her surname was probably “DePew”, like her younger siblings, James and Adelaide.
James Elzea was
born about 1837 UN10 or 1838 NE29 in Westchester County NE29, New York UN10, NE29. His surname was probably recorded
incorrectly; he was most likely the child of Catherine and a previous husband
whose surname was Depew or DePew. James
P. DePew was born in Clifton Springs, Ontario County, New York about 1837 JA8 or on November 23, 1837 in New York
(according to his Mason County, Michigan death certificate). James P. Depue, a
house painter who was born about 1838 in New York, and his wife, Clarissa (born
about 1844), were enumerated directly after the Elzea family in Manchester,
Ontario County, New York UN11. The
1865 New York Census recorded that James Depew (born about 1839 in Wayne County,
New York), his wife, Clara (born about 1844), and their infant daughter lived
in Manchester, Ontario County near Rufus and Catherine
(Depew) “Elza” NE30. Wayne County is just north of Ontario
County, and Clifton Springs is near the northern edge of Ontario County. The
name of their three-month-old daughter appeared to read “Frank”, but the ink
has faded and the name is questionable. A
five-year-old boy named James F. Depew lived with Rufus and Katherin Elza in
1870, and James P. Depew, born about 1838 in New York, and Ella Depew, born
about 1847, also lived with Rufus and Katherin UN12. He married Eliza A. Wilson in Kewanee,
Illinois JA8, which is located in
Henry County. A Henry County, Illinois marriage record stated that James P.
Depew, age twenty-seven, married Louisa A. Wilson, age seventeen, on December
10, 1874 HE13. If this is the correct marriage
record, there are errors. James shaved ten years off his age and Louisa added
three years. While his wife was called “Eliza” on census records, a gravestone
for Louisa Depew exists at Lakeview Cemetery in Ludington LU2. James P. Depew (born about 1838 UN13 or 1842 UN15 in New York UN13, UN15) and Eliza Depew (born about 1861 in
Pennsylvania UN13,
UN15) lived in
Ludington, Mason County in 1880 and 1910 UN13, UN15. James was called a painter and a veterinary surgeon UN13 whose father was born in France UN13 or New York UN15 and whose mother was born in New York UN13, UN15. The 1910 US Census stated that James
and Eliza had been married for thirty-five years UN15, which places their marriage in 1875.
The obituary for James P. DePew stated that he died six days before his
birthday on November 17, 1919 from a lung hemorrhage, and was survived by a
half-brother, William Elzea of Big Rapids, and a brother-in-law, DeGrove Padget
of Ludington JA8. His Mason County, Michigan death
certificate is faded; his father’s name is illegible, and his mother’s name
appeared to state “Catherine”, but it is extremely difficult to read, even
after adjusting the contrast and brightness of the image. The death certificate
stated that he died on November 17, 1919.
Adelaide
Elzea NE29 or Adelade Elsey UN10 was
born about 1840 UN10 or 1841 NE29 in Ontario County NE29,
New York UN10, NE29. This surname was incorrect, as she a
later marriage record stated that her maiden name was
“De Pew” MI23. Adelaide Depew was
married to Ambrose Kilmer by 1860, when they had a one-month-old daughter named
Victoria; at that time, they lived in Arcadia, Wayne County, New York UN11. Adelaide (or Adalade E. NE30)
Kilmer was born about 1840 NE30 or
1841 UN11 in Ontario County NE30,
New York UN11. Ambrose and Adalade E. Kilmer lived in Barrington, Yates
County, New York in 1865 with their two children, Flora D., age five, and
William H., age three NE30.
Adelaide was simply called “Depugh” Kilmer when she was enumerated in Kewanee,
Henry County, Illinois with Ambrose, Della, and William Kilmer UN12. “Depugh” Kilmer was born about 1842 in New York UN12. The family seems to have relocated to Elm Creek, Morris
County, Kansas by 1875, when they were enumerated simply by their initials KA5. A. Kilmer was born about 1828, A.E. Kilmer was born about
1839, D.F. was born about 1861, and W.H. was born about 1862 KA5. They may have lived in Beat 1, Clay County, Mississippi in
1880; that census record stated that A. Kilmer, age fifty-one, and his wife, A.
Kilmer, age thirty-nine, lived with their eighteen-year-old son, W.H.; all were
born in New York UN13. Adelaide E. (De
Pew) Kilmer of Ludington, age forty-two and born in New York, married Adolphus
D. Padgett, age twenty-nine, on April 20, 1883 in Ludington, Mason County,
Michigan MI23. A.D. and Adelaide Padgett lived in Ludington, Mason County in
1900 and 1910 UN14, UN15.
The 1900 US Census stated that Adelaide was born in July 1843 in New York to a
father who was born “at sea France” and a mother who was born in New Jersey UN14. They had been married for seventeen years and had a son,
Bertie Padgett, born in June 1884 UN14.
Adelaide reported that she was a mother of three children, of whom all three
were alive UN14. This suggests that Adelaide and Ambrose Kilmer changed the
name of their first child from Victoria to Flora Della. The Mason County,
Michigan death certificate for Adelaide E. Padgett stated that she was born on
July 9 in an unknown year in New York to unknown parents, and died on June 29,
1916 in Ludington, Mason County from acute gastritis. She was buried at
Lakeview Cemetery in Ludington, according to the photo of her gravestone (which
can be found on the Find a Grave
website). The Mason County, Michigan death certificate for her husband,
Adolphus DeGrove Padgett, stated that he was born to Rufus and Harriet
(Picksley) Padgett in “Shenango County”, New York on April 11, 1851 and died in
Ludington on July 23, 1938 MI21.
Lovica B. Elzea UN11, Lovicey Elsey UN10, or Lovisa Elzea NE29
was born about 1844 UN10 or 1845 UN11, NE29 in Yates County NE29, New York UN10, UN11. Rufus
Elzea, Jr. was born about 1847 UN10 or 1848 UN11, NE29, NE30 in Ontario County NE29, NE30, New York UN11, NE29.
It is probable that Rufus Elzea was the same person as William R. Elzea.
William R. Elzea and his wife, Jennie, lived in Chippewa Township, Mecosta
County, Michigan in the census years of 1900, 1910, 1920, and 1930 UN14, UN15, UN16, UN17. In 1870, William R. Elza, age
twenty-three (born about 1847 in New York) and his wife, “Jane”, lived in the
same house as Rufus and “Katharin Elza” in Manistee Ward 3, Manistee County,
Michigan UN12. In 1880, William and Jennie “Elzer”
lived next door to Charles and “Georgiannetta” Padgett in Ludington, Mason
County, Michigan with Jennie’s sister, Elizabeth Farren UN13. The 1900 US Census recorded that
William was born in June 1847 in New York to a father who was born in
Connecticut and a mother who was born in New York; he had been married to
Jennie for thirty-three years, indicating a marriage year of 1867 UN14. The Mason County, Michigan death
certificate for William Elzea stated that he was born on June 21, 1847 in New
York to Rufus Elzea, who was born in Connecticut, and Kathleen Phillips, who
was born in New York MI21.
William died as a widower at age eighty-six on February 25, 1934 in Hamlin,
Mason County, Michigan from stomach cancer MI21. His obituary stated that William Elzea was born in June 1847
in Clifton Springs, New York WM1,
which is located in Ontario County. Georgiaetta NE30, Georgiaett Elzea UN11, or Georgina Elza UN12 was born about 1856 NE30 or 1857 UN11, UN12 in Ontario County NE30, New York UN11, UN12, NE30.
In
1870, Rufus, Katharin, and Georgina “Elza” shared their home with a five-year-old
boy named James F. Depue, who was born in New York and was blind, as well as
two additional childless couples: William R. Elza and his wife, Jane, and James
Depew and his wife, Ella UN12.
Catherine A. Elzea allegedly died at age sixty-three and was buried at Lakeview
Cemetery in Ludington, Mason County, Michigan in 1878 LU2. Her cemetery plot, located in Block 1, Lot 12, Plot 10, is next
to two individuals with the DePew surname: James P. Depew, who died in 1919,
and Louisa A. DePew, who died in 1923 LU2.
According to a representative at Lakeview Cemetery, James DePew purchased five
plots, including Catherine’s plot. The 1880 US Federal Census Mortality Schedule for Mason County, Michigan recorded the death of sixty-six-year-old
Catherine Elzer, a widow born in New York who had lived in Mason County for
four years, and who died from paralysis at age sixty-six in March 1880 US7. Her death
was also recorded under the name “Catherine E. Ellery”, a widow aged sixty-six
years and two months who was born in New York and who died of paralysis on
March 12, 1880 in Ludington, Mason County MI21.
