Edward Marrison (Thomas) was baptized in Bawtry, Yorkshire,
England on April 9, 1780 as the son of Thomas Marrison NO8. Bawtry is just west of the River Idle
and is ten miles northeast of Worksop and about
twenty-two miles east of Sheffield. He married Lucy Lee on November 17, 1800 in
Rotherham, Yorkshire, England PA9, CH15, GO3; the vicar for this parish at that time
may have been Thomas Bayliffe, as his name was found
on several parish records in 1800 and 1801 CH15. His death certificate, provided by the
General Register Office, confirmed his birth year of 1780, and stated that he was
a bricklayer. The death certificate also stated that he died on January 29,
1839 in Worksop, Nottinghamshire, in the sub-district
of Carlton, but specifically in Serlby Wood, England.
He was fifty-nine years old at the time of his death, and the cause of death
stated, “Being of unsound mind; Hung Himself”. Because he died in a forest,
he may have hung himself from a tree branch.
Lucy Lee (Thomas) was christened on April 6, 1778 in
Silkstone CH16, which is about four miles west of Barnsley, and is roughly
equidistant between Sheffield and Leeds. This birth year is somewhat similar to the birth year inferred from her age in the 1841
and 1851 census records, which indicated that she was born in 1781. Her
father’s name was listed on the christening record as “Thomas Lee” of Dodworth CH16.
According to the 1851 UK census, which stated that she was a widow and a
housekeeper, she was born in Barnsley, Yorkshire, England.
Lucy and Edward
Marrison were the parents of Mary, Thomas, Ann, George, William, John, and Alfred. Mary
Marrison was born on June 27, 1801 and was baptized on July 19, 1801 CH15. Thomas
Marrison was born on December 29, 1803 and was baptized on February 12,
1804 EN4. He may have been the Thomas Marrison who married Eliza Wragg on
January 2, 1832 in Firbeck, Yorkshire, England EN6. Firbeck is
about eight miles north of Worksop, and about five
miles west of Blyth. If he was the Thomas Marrison who married Eliza Wragg,
then he was a cooper who lived in Blyth, Nottinghamshire during the 1841, 1851,
and 1861 England censuses EN19, EN20, EN21. These census records state that Thomas was born about 1804 EN20, EN21 or 1806 EN19 in Rotherham,
Yorkshire EN20,
EN21. Their children
were Elsheba, Christiana, Thomas, George, John,
Henry, Eliza, Isabella, Hariett, Ellen, Fanny,
William, and Edmund EN19, EN20, EN21. This was probably the same Thomas Marrison who died at age
sixty-two in Worksop, Nottinghamshire in January,
February, or March 1866 EN13. Ann
Marrison was born on
October 28, 1806 and was baptized on November 23, 1806 EN4.
George Marrison was
born on March 8, 1812 and was baptized on March 29, 1812 EN4. He may have been the George Marrison who married Ann Webster on
March 9, 1835 in Blyth, Nottinghamshire, England EN6. If he was this George, then he was a mason or bricklayer who
lived in Blyth, Nottinghamshire in 1841 and 1851 EN19, EN20. These censuses recorded that George
was born about 1812 EN19, EN20 in Rotherham, Yorkshire EN20.
Ann was born about 1816 EN19, EN20, EN21 in Budby, Nottinghamshire EN20 or
Rufford, Nottinghamshire EN21.
Their children were Joseph, William, Charles (who was one week old in 1841),
George, Elizabeth, Ann, and John EN19, EN20, EN21.
George may have been the George Marrison who died in April, May, or June 1858
in Worksop, Nottinghamshire EN13. Ann Marrison was called a widow in 1861 when she was
enumerated with her daughter and son, Ann and John EN21. William
Marrison was baptized on October 2, 1814 EN4.
John Marrison,
the son of Edward and Lucy Marrison, was christened on August 17, 1817 in
Blyth, Nottinghamshire, England EN4. Alfred Morrison, the son of Edward and
Lucy Morrison, was christened on October 8, 1821 in Blyth, Nottinghamshire,
England EN4. He lived in his mother’s household in Blyth, Nottinghamshire
in 1841 EN19.
At the time of the
1841 census, she lived with Alfred Marrison, who was twenty years old, as well
as a twenty-five-year-old William Roebuck, who may have been a cobbler, for his
occupation was “shoe m” EN19.
