Henry
Fishel, Jr. (Heinrich) was born about 1810 in North
Carolina UN11, UN12, UN13 or about 1811 UN10. Henry Fishel, Jr. was in Johnson County, Indiana as early as
October 31, 1831 PR18. He
purchased eighty acres of land in Johnson County, Indiana on September 2, 1834,
which was the same date that his father purchased eighty acres in Johnson
County GE4. Honey Creek flowed across this land, which was the west half of
the southwest quarter of Section 14 in Township 13 North GE4. A Johnson County, Indiana marriage record dated February 26,
1838 between Henry Fishel and Trasy E. Hollanback may have been the date of their marriage
application RI12. Henry
married Trasy E. Hollanbuck
on March 6, 1838 in Johnson County, Indiana IN6, RI14, and two years later in 1840, he was
listed on the same page of the census as his father. At the time of the 1850
census, Henry Jr. was thirty-nine years old and farming land in White River
Township, Johnson County, Indiana with his wife, Tracy, who was thirty years
old. Five children were living with them: Solomon, age twelve, Adam, age ten,
Jacob, age eight, a four-year-old daughter whose name appeared to be “Barbary”,
and Christian, age one.
The 1860 census is
peculiar, because it listed Henry, age fifty, then underneath this, clearly
listed a woman named Sarah, age thirty-seven, who was from North
Carolina. It then listed the children living with them at the time: Solomon,
who was then twenty-one, Adam, age twenty, Jacob, age seventeen, Barbara, age
sixteen, Chris, age ten, William, age seven, Sophia, age five, Car (the name is
partially illegible, but was probably Caroline) age three, and a baby boy who
was six months old who didn’t have a name.
At the time of the
1880 census, Henry Jr. was seventy years old and farming land in Jackson
Township, Brown County, Indiana. His wife was “Teresa E.”, and her age was fifty-seven.
The enumerator for the 1880 census remarked that Henry was maimed, crippled,
bedridden, or otherwise disabled. A representative from the Brown County
Department of Health stated that a record of death for Henry Fishel was not
filed in that county.

Teresa
E. Hollanbuck was
born in March 1822 in North Carolina UN14
or 1820, 1822, or 1823 in North Carolina, according to the 1850, 1870, and 1880
censuses. The death certificate for “Theresa” Fishel recorded
that she was born on March 4, 1823 in North Carolina to a father with the
surname of “Holland” IN20.
Her name was recorded as “Eliza Holland” on the death certificate for her
daughter, Elizabeth Catherine Smith, as “Th… Holland” on the death certificate
for her son, Solomon Fishel, and “Tracy Holland” on the death certificate for
her son, Adam Fishel IN20.
Her name may have been Theresa, Teresa, Terracy
or Trasy, which were all variations of the same name,
but were written by different census enumerators at different
times. Her son, Jacob, stated in 1915 that his mother’s name was Tracy
Holland MO5, IN21.
Her full name may have been Theresa Eliza Holland, but
records of her marriage license state that her name was Trasy
E. Hollanback or Hollanbuck
RI12, RI14.
In 1880, she stated that both of her parents were born in
North Carolina UN13,
but in 1900, she stated that they were both born in Germany UN14.
Teresa was the mother
of nine known children who were all born in Indiana: Solomon, Adam, Jacob, Barbary/Barbara,
Christian/Christopher, William, Susan, Caroline, and Elizabeth Catherine. The
death certificate for Solomon Fishel
was in extremely poor condition, but his name, birthdate, birthplace, father’s
and mother’s names, approximate death date, and cause of death were legible IN20. Solomon was born on April 4, 1939 in
Indiana to Henery or Henry Fishel and Th… Holland,
and he died at age seventy years and eleven months in March 1910 due to
“Hiccough” IN20.
The contributing factors to his death were illegible. The death date may state
March 10 or March 16, and the place of his death may state Jackson Township,
Boone County IN20.
His death certificate was filed among others from Boone County, but according
to the 1900 US Census, in which his recorded birth month and year was April
1839, he lived in Jackson Township, Brown County at that time UN14.
According to his death certificate, Adam Fishel was born about 1836 in Indiana
to Henry Fishel and Tracy Holland, who were both said to have been born in
North Carolina, and died at age ninety-two on December 9, 1928 in Tremont,
Tazewell County, Illinois IL2.
Adam was listed after Solomon in the 1850 US Census,
at which time his stated age was ten years old UN10. Adam Fishel was an unmarried farmer
who was born in Indiana, resided in Jackson Township, Brown County, Indiana in
June 1863, and was twenty-three years old as of July 1, 1863 US3. Teresa’s next son, Jacob Fishel, was born on November 9,
1842 MO5, IN2, IN20.
Barbary
Fishel
married Thomas Beech on January 16, 1870 in Brown County, Indiana IN21. The death certificate for Barbra Ellen
Beech stated that she was born on December 1, but did not state her birth year,
and this may be because her stated age at the time of her death did not add up
properly. The death certificate stated that she was eighty-two years, seven
months, and ten days old at the time of her death on August 10, 1929, but that
would mean she was born on December 31, 1846 IN20. It is doubtful that the informant,
Joshua Beech, who was her son, would have incorrectly stated her birthdate, and
so her birthdate was probably December 1, 1846. The death certificate stated
that her father was George Fishel and did not record her mother’s name IN20. She died from laryngeal paralysis in
German Township, Bartholomew County, Indiana IN20. Because her father’s name was not
listed as Henry Fishel, there is a possibility that this Barbara Fishel was not
the Barbara who was born to Henry and Theresa.
Christopher
Fishel was
born on December 30, 1848 in Indiana to Henry Fishel, whose birthplace was
North Carolina, and died at age sixty-seven on April 26, 1916 from cerebral
congestion in Trevlac, Brown County, Indiana IN20. His wife’s name was Sarah E. Fishel IN20. His name was “Christian” on the 1850
and 1870 US census records UN10, UN12 and
“Chris.” on the 1860 US Census UN11. Christian
Fishel and Elizabeth Winkler were married on December 29, 1872 in Brown County,
Indiana IN21.
The marriage record of their son, Wilson Fishel, stated that his father’s name
was Christopher Fishel, and his mother was Sarah E. Winkler IN21.
William
Fishel was
born on March 4, 1852 in Indiana to “Henery” Fishel
of Pennsylvania and Sarah Mermian, and died at age
seventy-nine on May 26, 1931 in Morgantown, Morgan County, Indiana IN20. The informant for the death
certificate was Edith Fishel IN20. This
William Fishel would appear to be a different individual than the William who
was born to Henry and Teresa, but a Morgan County marriage record stated that William
Fishel married Sarah Edith Merriman on February 5, 1901 IN21, and a death notice printed on May 28,
1931 in The
Edinburg Daily Courier stated BR25:
Jacob Fishel, age
eighty-eight, a resident of Martinsville and a veteran of the civil war, and
his brother, William Fishel, age seventy-six, Morgantown, died within
twenty-four hours. Jacob Fishel is survived by the widow and nine children.
William Fishel is survived by a daughter Edith. Both are also survived by a
sister, Mrs. Harry Smith, Indianapolis, and a brother, Henry Fishel,
Martinsville.
Susan
Fishel
married Joshua J. Whittaker on November 18, 1875 in Brown County, Indiana IN21. She was called Sophia on the 1860 US
Census UN11,
which may have been her middle name or a nickname. A gravestone at East Hill
Cemetery in Morgantown, Morgan County, Indiana indicated that Susie, the wife
of Joshua J. Whitaker, was born on December 9, 1855 and died at age forty on
March 13, 1896; the photo of the gravestone can be located on the Find a
Grave website. Teresa’s next daughter, Caroline
Fishel was born about 1857 UN11 or
1858 UN12 and
married Andrew J. Swisher on September 14, 1879 in Brown County, Indiana IN21.
Elizabeth
Catherine (Fishel) Smith was
born on April 1, 1863 in Brown County, Indiana to Henry Fishel and Eliza
Holland IN20.
She may have been the unnamed six-month-old infant in the 1860 US Census who
was marked “male” UN11, for
in the 1870 US Census, Elizabeth C. was ten years old UN12. If Elizabeth was actually
ten years old in 1870, then her birth year on her death certificate was
incorrect. Elizabeth Catherine Fishel married Cashas
M. Collins on December 25, 1879 in Brown County, Indiana IN21. They lived in Jackson Township, Morgan
County, Indiana at the time of the 1880 US Census, in which Elizabeth’s husband
was recorded as “Casius M.” Collins. By the time of the 1900 US Census, Casius
was not listed with Elizabeth. Elizabeth Collins was the head of the household
in Jackson Township, Morgan County, Indiana with her children, William, Anna,
Harry, and John, and she stated that she was born in April 1860 in Indiana to
parents who were both born in North Carolina. She also stated that she was
married. Elizabeth K. Collins, the daughter of Henry Fishel and a mother with
the maiden name of Holland, next married Seth R.
Goodwin on January 27, 1901 in Morgan County, Indiana IN21. The 1910 US Census found Elizabeth
Smith as the wife of Harry S. Smith, and they resided in the same house as
Harry’s three stepsons, William, Harry, and John Collins, in Indianapolis,
Marion County, Indiana. She died at age eighty-four on June 6, 1947 from
cerebral apoplexy due to arteriosclerosis in Indianapolis, Indiana, and her
husband’s name at the time of her death was Harry S. Smith IN20.
Teresa lived with the family of her widowed
son-in-law, Joshua Whitaker, at the time of the 1900 census UN14; Joshua had married her daughter, Susan
Fishel, in 1875 IN7, IN21. She
stated in 1900 that she was able to read and write, and that she was the mother
of eleven children, but at that time, just six were alive. Her name was spelled “Theresa” Fishel on
her death certificate IN20.
She died at age eighty as a widow on September 4, 1903 in Morgantown, Morgan
County, Indiana, and the cause of her death was “old age” due to a cerebral
hemorrhage and paralysis IN20.
Henry Fishel was named as her husband IN20.
She was buried at what appeared to be “Towry Cem” in Morgantown, and the informant to the death
certificate was William Fishell IN20.
Teresa may have been related
to George
Hollenback, who lived in Johnson County, Indiana as
early as June
19, 1821 PR18. On April 20, 1825 as George “Hollandback”, he purchased two parcels of eighty acres of
land apiece GE4.
These lots were the west half of the southeast quarter of Section 19 in
Township 11 North, and the west half of the northeast quarter of Section 30 in
Township 11 North GE4. George
was selected to serve on the Grand Jury for Johnson County in 1827 BA16, and at the time of the 1830 census,
George Hollenback was enumerated in Ninevah, Johnson County, Indiana UN8. His age was of fifty but younger than
sixty, and he was enumerated with one girls between
five and nine, one boy and one girl of fifteen but younger than twenty, and one
woman of forty but under fifty. The girl who was of five years old, but younger
than ten, could have been Teresa. George
Hollenbeck purchased forty acres in the southeast quarter of the northeast
quarter of Section 30 in Township 11 North in Johnson County on October 16,
1835 GE4.
William P. Hollandbeck purchased 71.35 acres in the east
half of the southwest quarter of Section 19 in Township 11 North in Johnson
County on September 30, 1835 GE4.
In 1840, there were two households with
the Hollenback surname in Johnson County, Indiana,
and the heads of these households were George and William P. Hollenback; George’s family consisted of just himself and
his wife, who were both of sixty, but younger than sixty-nine, and William P. Hollenback was of twenty but younger than twenty-nine. According to the Johnson County, Indiana
Probate Order Book C, page 442,
William P. Hollanback died sometime before August 12,
1840, when the court appointed James Ware as the administrator of his estate HO25. The 1850 census recorded two households with the Hollenback surname in Johnson County. The family of W.P. Hollenback, who was born in Virginia about the year 1811,
lived in Franklin Township, Johnson County. The other household, in Ninevah, Johnson County, was comprised of several individuals who did not share the same surname, and
it included Susanna Hollenback, who was born about
1780 in South Carolina.
According to records written in a Bible
which was owned by George and Susannah Hollandbeck,
and later by Edna Hollandbeck, several
Hollandbeck individuals were recorded, but the name
“Tracy” or “Teresa” did not appear JO11.
The absence of her name in this Bible is a strong indication that Tracy/Teresa
was not a child of George Hollandbeck JO11. The names which were mentioned were
John Hollandbeck, the son of George and Susannah, who
was born on August 31, 179? and died on October 23, 1799, Myrtilla
B. Hollandbeck, born on December 11, 1800 and died as
Myrtilla B. Shaffer on October 26, 1826, George
Washington Hollandbeck, born on March 7, 1808 and
died on September 13, 1823, William Powell, born on February 17, 1811 and died
on July 10, 1850, Benjamin Guy Hollandbeck, born on
April 28, 1816 and died on July 23, 1823, and Mary Ann Hollandbeck,
born on October 28, 1820 JO11.
Mary Ann Hollandbeck married Phillip Jones on April
20, 1837 in Johnson County, Indiana RI14.
George Hollandbeck, the father of these individuals,
died on March 28, 1849, and his wife, Susannah, died on November 9, 1852 JO11.
