Charles Morris Padgett, Jr. (Charles, Mary) was born about 1849 NE29 or 1850 NE30, UN11 in Chenango County, New York NE29, NE30, or on January 12, 1850 in Oxford, Chenango
County, New York, according to his death certificate. The 1870 census reported
that he lived with the Bradley household and worked on their farm as a laborer.
Charles Padgett and Georgia
N. Elsa, both of Grant Township, Mason County, were married by Goit Brown,
Justice of the Peace (his first name was also spelled “Goyt” in other marriage
records) on October 10, 1871 in Grant Township, Mason County, Michigan MI23. William R. Elsea and Jennie Elsea were
witnesses to the ceremony MI23.
Charles stated that he was twenty-one and was born in New York, while Georgia
was just fifteen years old, and was born in New Hampshire MI23.
It is possible
that Charles and his family resided in Kewanee, Henry County, Illinois in about
1875, as this appeared to be the stated birth location of his son, James H.
Padgett, on his marriage record MI2.
At the time of the 1880
census, Charles worked in a sawmill. Charles W. Padgett and Dora Chambers, both of Freesoil, Mason
County, were married by E.F. Newell, an elder of the M.E. Church, on August 17,
1884 in Freesoil, Mason County, Michigan MI23. A son of
Charles Padgett broke his leg in two places in January 1906, and at that time,
the Padgett family lived west of the Stickney schoolhouse TH11. This son may have been Glen or Milton.
Charles and Dora
were the parents of Chester Morrison, Willie Calvin, Wallace Delbert, Florence
M., Glen Russel, Milton Reese, and Elmer T. Padgett. Chester
Morrison Padgett was
born on May 24, 1883 US27, US14
in Freewater (this may have been a typographical error; his parents resided in
Freesoil in 1884), Michigan to Charles M. Padgett and Dora Chambers US27. He and Mattie B. Rhyme, who were both
of Multnomah County, Oregon, were married by Thomas F. May on November 1, 1913
in Vancouver, Clark County, Washington WA33. Mattie’s middle name was Belle US14. William Calven (Willie Calvin) Padgett was born on February 21, 1889 US20, US28 in Scottville, Michigan US28. Willie Calvin Padgett, the son of
Charles M. Padgett and Dora Chambers, married Pearl (Covert) Padgett on April
12, 1919 in Walloon Lake, Charlevoix County, Michigan in a ceremony officiated
by Reverend Anna Shultz MI23.
He died on October 13, 1962 US20. Wallace
Delbert Padgett was born on August
21, 1890 in Watervliet, Berrien County, Michigan US14, US28, US26. Wallace, the son of
Chas. M. Padgett and Dora F. Chambers, and Elizabeth P. Geyer, both of Clarion,
Michigan, were married by W.E. Young on November 11, 1917 in Clarion,
Charlevoix County, Michigan MI23.
He died in August 1971 US26.
Florence M. Padgett was born in January 1893 UN14 in Mancelona, Michigan MI23. Florence Padgett of Mancelona, Michigan, the
daughter of Chas. Padgett, and Harry Huston of Clarion were married by Reverend
Peter Humphry in “Waloon Lake”, Charlevoix County, Michigan on August
21, 1913 MI23. Florence
and Harry divorced on February 3, 1922 in Berrien County, Michigan MI22. Florence was the victim of domestic
assault in 1922 WA24. Florence and Dora were both shot by
James Negeck, a “Pottawattamie Indian” paper mill employee who was infatuated
with Florence WA24,
MU3. Before entering
the Padgett residence on December 26, 1922 at 7:00pm, Mr. Negeck purchased
ammunition for his .32 caliber revolver at Lewis Drug Store WA24, MU3. He first shot Dora in the jaw WA24, and then, according to Florence, he
turned to her and allegedly stated, “If I can’t have you, no other man can” MU3. He fired three shots at Florence - once
in the arm between her elbow and shoulder, and twice in the breasts WA24. He then fired one bullet just below his
heart and another into his abdomen WA24.
He died two days later at Mercy Hospital MU3,
but Florence and Dora were able to give an interview to the local newspaper
slightly over a week after the incident at that same hospital MU3. On December 24, 1925, Florence Huston was described as the
daughter of Charles Padgett and Dora Chambers who was of Watervliet, Michigan
when she married Will Schoonover in Hanover, Montana MO14. Florence Schoonover died on August 30,
1933 MO15.
Glen Russel Padgett was born on May 4, 1895 US14, MI20 in Oxford, New York US14. Glen R. Padgett, the son of Chas. M. Padgett
and Dora Chambers, and Mabel E. Shannon, both of Petoskey, Michigan, were
married by J.W. Sheehan (or Shuhan) on July 16, 1919 in Petoskey, Emmet County,
Michigan MI23. He died at age eighty-five on February
4, 1981 in Petoskey, Emmet County, Michigan MI20. Milton Reese Padgett
was born on August 22, 1898 US14
in Oxford, New York MI23.
Milton Padgett of Grand Rapids, Michigan, the son of Chas. M. Pa… and Dora
Shoemaker [sic] married Sarah W.
Rehloff on December 16, 1922 in Grand Rapids, Kent County, Michigan MI23. Milton
and Sarah divorced on July 17, 1945 in Grand Traverse, Michigan MI22. He later married Viola M. Eldred on
September 1, 1945 in Cadillac, Wexford County, Michigan, where he again stated
that his father’s name was Charles Padgett and his mother’s name was Dora F.
Shumaker MI23. He died on April 11, 1957 IN29. Elmer
T. Padgett was born on July 14, 1904 US26. Elmer married Blanche on
February 21, 1928 in South Bend, Indiana, but they divorced on August 24, 1944
in Kalamazoo, Michigan MI22. He died on January 30, 1990 US26.
The 1900 census
indicated that Dora was born in September 1860, which made her only fifteen
years older than her stepson, James Padgett. Charles’ death certificate
indicated that he died of pericarditis in Chandler, Charlevoix County, Michigan
at age sixty-eight on November 20, 1918, and he was buried in nearby Clarion,
Michigan.

Georgiaetta Elzea (Rufus,
Catherine) was born
circa 1856 in Ontario County, New York NE30
or about 1857 in New York to a father who was born in Connecticut and a mother
who was born in New Jersey UN12, UN13.
Her given name and her maiden surname were spelled variously as “Georgiaett
Elzea” UN11, “Georgiaetta Elza” NE30, “Georgina Elza” UN12, and “Georgiannetta Padgett” UN13. The September 1902 marriage record for
her son, James H. Padgett, stated that her maiden name
was “Elzeo” MI8, but the death record for James Padgett
stated his mother’s name was Georgia Ealsie (or perhaps Ealsic). A typed
certified copy of the marriage record for Charles Padgett and “Georgia Netta
Elrea”, which was provided by the Clerk of Mason County and of the Circuit
Court, stated that she was born in Manchester, New Hampshire. In the
handwritten version of the marriage record, her maiden name
does resemble “Elra”, and the surnames of the witnesses, William A. Elsea and
Jennie Elsea, could be mistaken for “Elrea” MI23.
These two witnesses also dwelled in Grant Township, Mason County, Michigan MI23. In 1880, the fledgling Padgett family,
Charles, Georgiannetta, and James, resided next to William and Jennie “Elzer”
on Charles Street, which was later renamed Rath Avenue UN13. William and Jennie “Elzer” were almost
certainly the same individuals who witnessed the wedding of Charles and
Georgia, but their surname was written incorrectly on the 1880 census, because
according to William’s obituary, his surname was spelled “Elzea” WM1. William was probably closely related to
Georgiaetta, for he was born in about 1847 in New York, and he stated that his
father was born in Connecticut, and his mother was born in New York UN13. He may have been her cousin.
Georgiaetta was the mother of four known sons, James
Henry, Eddie, Robert C., and Robert Chester. James Henry Padgett was born on November 1, 1875 in Michigan to
Chas. Padgett and Georgia “Ealsic”, according to his Antrim County, Michigan
death certificate. Eddie was born
about March 1879 to Charles M. and Georgia Nettie Padgett, and died at the age
of three months of a “spinal complaint” on June 24, 1879 in Ludington, Mason
County, Michigan MI3. Robert C.
Padgett was born on July 25, 1880 MI1, yet he also died of
a “spinal complaint” at the age of three months on October 28, 1880 in
Ludington MI3. On this death record, Robert’s mother was “Georgetta
Padgett” MI3. These spinal cord issues may have been neural tube
defects, a spinal injury suffered from the birthing process, or some other spinal malformation. Almost precisely one year
later, another son was born to Charles and Georgia “Paggeot” on July 24, 1881,
and they named him Robert Chester MI1. He died at seven days old in Mason
County, Michigan on July 21, 1881, and his cause of death was unknown MI3.
Georgiaetta may have
died between July 1881 and 1884, but the Mason County Clerk was unable to locate her
death certificate. Because
Chester Morrison Padgett, the son of
Charles and Dora, was born on May 24, 1883 US27, US14, Georgiaetta’s death may have occurred earlier than August 17,
1884, the wedding date of Chester’s parents MI23.
