Thomas Lee was the father of Lucy Lee, and lived in Dodworth
CH16, a coal mining town just three miles west
of Barnsley, in what is now South Yorkshire. The Silkstone Parish register recorded baptismal, marriage, and
burial records for several individuals with the Lee
surname, and it appears as though there were a few distinct Lee families in the
area around Barnsley, Yorkshire in the mid to late 1700s. Since Thomas lived in
Dodworth, he was probably the Thomas Lee who was
called a laborer of Dodworth who died at age
sixty-eight and was buried on September 25, 1808 in Silkstone in the West
Riding of Yorkshire YO18.
His age at the time of death indicates that he was born about 1740 YO18. There were two baptismal records dated
around that time which may have been his. Thomas Lee, the son of Thomas Lee,
was baptized on December 7, 1735 in Darton YO16. Thomas Lee, the son of William Lee of Stainborough, was baptized on December 12, 1742 in
Silkstone YO16. Darton is a
bit further away from Dodworth than Stainborough, but both villages are within walking distance
from Dodworth, so neither baptismal record could be
ruled out in terms of geographic probability. It is entirely possible that
either Thomas Lee relocated from either Stainborough
or Darton to Dodworth at some point.
There were also
two marriage records for someone named Thomas Lee, which could be for the same
individual or for two different individuals. The banns for Thomas Lee of Darton, a husbandman, and Mary Hinchliffe of Silkstone, a
spinster, were published on November 11, 18, and 25, 1759 WE27. They were married by J. Purslove, a curate, in Silkstone in the West Riding of
Yorkshire, England on November 26, 1759 WE27, YO17. This Thomas was most likely the Thomas who was baptized in
1735. The banns of marriage for Thomas Lee of Silkstone, husbandman, and Mary
Winter of Silkstone, spinster, were published on November 20 and 27 and on
December 4, 1768 WE27. They were married by J. Purslove, a curate for the Silkstone Parish, on December 8,
1768 WE27, YO17. If both marriage records were for the
same Thomas Lee, then his first wife must have died sometime before November
1768, and he must have moved to Silkstone. In both marriage records, Thomas Lee
was called a husbandman, which was a term for a farmer.
The
children of Thomas Lee of Dodworth seem to have been
born between 1772 and 1788, and in one record, his wife was called Mary Lee. Hannah
Lee, the daughter of Thomas Lee of Dodworth, was
baptized on June 21, 1772 in Silkstone YO16.
Elizabeth Lee, the daughter of Thomas Lee of Dodworth,
was baptized on February 5, 1775 in Silkstone YO16. Lucy Lee, the daughter of Thomas Lee of Dodworth,
was baptized on April 6, 1778 in Silkstone YO16.
Mary Lee, the daughter of Thomas Lee of Dodworth, was
baptized in Silkstone on February 21, 1781 YO16. Mary
Lee, the daughter of Thomas Lee of Dodworth, was
buried on February 18, 1783 in Silkstone YO18. Rebeccah Lee, the daughter of Thomas and Mary Lee of Dodworth, was baptized on February 17, 1788 in Silkstone YO16.
There was a Lee
family in Stainborough, the village located 1 ½ miles
south of Dodworth. Mary Lee, called a smithy of Stainborough, was buried on February 21, 1766 in Silkstone YO18 and Joseph Lee, the son of Mary Lee of Stainborough (called “illegitimate”) was baptized on August
5, 1787 in Silkstone YO16. Hoylandswaine
is a village four miles west of Dodworth; another Lee
family seems to have resided there in the 1760s because Sarah Lee, the daughter
of Thomas Lee of Hoylandswaine, was baptized in Silkstone on March 24, 1761 YO16. A bit over five miles northeast of Dodworth lies Carlton; Thomas Lee, a cordwainer (this was a
manufacturer of new shoes) of Carlton, was buried in Royston in the West Riding
of Yorkshire on July 2, 1792 YO18. Rawmarsh is north of Rotherham
and about twelve miles southeast of Dodworth. A Lee
family may have lived there in the 1770s because Thomas Lee, the son of Thomas
Lee, a collier (coal miner), and Mary, the daughter of John Lee, was baptized
on May 15, 1779 at St. Mary the Virgin in Rawmarsh in
the West Riding of Yorkshire YO16. Further
south, Thomas Lee of Rotherham was buried on December
7, 1782 at All Saints Church in Rotherham in the West
Riding of Yorkshire YO18.
