Jesse Holiday (Robert, Edith) was a farmer who was born
about the year 1805 in North Carolina UN10 or on March 8, 1805 OS1, US21. Jesse Holliday, the
son of Robert and Edith of Orange County, Indiana, married Abigail Osborn, the
daughter of Abraham and Martha of Orange County, on September 22, 1825 at the
Newberry Meeting House in Paoli, Indiana MA34,
OS1. The record of their marriage
stated US11:
Whereas Jesse Holladay Son of Robert and
Edith Holladay his wife of the County of Orange and State of Indianna and Abigail Osbern
Daughter of Abraham and Martha Osbern of the County
of Orange and State above said having Declared their intention of Marriage with
Each Other before a Monthly Meeting of the Religious Society of friends held at
Lick Creek in the County of Orange and haveing concent of parents their said proposals of Marriage were
allowed of by Said Meeting these are to Certify
whence it May Concern that for the full accomplishment of their Said intentions
this 22nd Day of the 9th Month in the year of our Lord one
thousand Eight hundred and twenty five they the said
Jesse Holladay and Abigail Ozbern appeared in a
public Meeting of the Said people at Newberry Meeting house and Jesse Holladay
taken the said Abigail Ozbern by the hand declared he
took her the Said Abigail Ozbern to be his Wife promiseing to be unto her a loveing
and faithful husband untill Death Seperate
them and then the Said Abigail Ozbern did in like
manner declare that she took him the Said Jesse Holladay to be her husband
promising with Devine assistance to be unto him a loveing
faithful wife untill Death should seperate
them and Moreover the said Jesse Holloday and Abigail
Ozbern She according to the custom of Marriage
adopting the Name of her husband did as a further Confirmation then and their to these presents set their hands
He and his family temporarily relocated to Vermilion
County, Illinois by the year 1830, but within a few
years, they had returned to Orange County, Indiana. A Vermilion Monthly Meeting record dated March 5, 1831 stated that Jesse
Holladay and his sons, William and Abraham, were received on a certificate
dated December 23, 1830 from the Lick Creek Monthly Meeting in Indiana US21. The
records of the Vermilion Monthly Meeting stated that Jesse and Abigail Holiday, along with their children, William, Mary Jane,
Abraham, and John were granted certificates to Lick Creek Monthly Meeting in
Indiana on June 6, 1835 US21. The name of French Lick Township in Orange
County, where Jesse and Abigail resided in 1850, was derived from the salt
licks which predominated in that area, which were a natural draw for animals HI9.
After the death of Abigail, Jesse remarried to “Lyema” (probably Luzena) Holladay,
who had formerly been his sister-in-law, as she was the widow of his brother,
Robert, and with Luzena, Jesse was the father of a
son, Nat Holiday OS1. The marriage record of Jesse Holliday and “Lewzena”
Holliday stated that they were married on January 24, 1858 in Vermilion County,
Illinois by H.H. Ashmore VE10. They relocated to Champaign, Illinois, and it
was in this area, in an unidentified cemetery approximately ten miles east of
Champaign, Illinois, that Jesse was said to have been buried after his death on
December 23, 1858 OS1.

1830 US Census: lived in Vermilion County, Illinois with one girl
and one boy under the age of five and one woman between twenty and twenty-nine.

1840 US Census: lived in the southwest part of Orange County,
Indiana with three boys under the age of five, one girl and one boy between
five and nine, one girl and two boys between ten and fourteen, one woman
between thirty and thirty-nine, and himself, who was also between thirty and
thirty-nine.

1850 US Census: lived in French Lick Township, Orange
County, Indiana.
Abigail Osborn (Abraham, Martha) was born about the year 1803
UN10 or 1805 OS1 in
North Carolina UN10. Her gravestone indicated that she was born on October 20,
1805. A Vermilion Monthly Meeting record dated March 5, 1831 stated
that Abigail Holladay and her daughter, Mary Jane, were received on a
certificate dated December 18, 1830 from the Lick Creek Monthly Meeting in
Indiana US21. As
“Abagail Holody”, she was mentioned in her father’s
will which was dated May 20, 1842 IN4. She
was probably the mother of all ten children enumerated in the Holiday household
in 1850, who were all born in Indiana: William, Mary Jane, Abram, John,
Elizabeth Ellen, Robert, twins Lindis and Lidon, Martha, and Charles UN10, OS1.
William
Holiday was
born about 1826 in Indiana UN10,
and according to the Rush Creek Monthly Meeting records, William “Holiday” was
born on June 27, 1826 US11. William
C. Holladay married Martha A. Thompson on June 3, 1860 in Orange County,
Indiana IN21. He
resided as a widower with his daughter, Mary E. Holliday in Blaine, Garfield
County, Oklahoma in 1900, and he informed the census enumerator that he was
born in June 1826 in Indiana to parents who were born in North Carolina UN14. A gravestone for William C. Holladay,
located at River View Cemetery in Alcorn, Kay County, Oklahoma stated that he
was born on June 27, 1826 and died on November 13, 1902 (a photo of the
gravestone can be found on the Find a
Grave website).
Mary J. (Mary Jane OS1) was born about 1828 UN10. Mary Jane Holliday married James M. Pinnick
on January 7, 1847 in Orange County, Indiana IN21. At the time of the 1900 US Census,
Mary J. Pinnick was a widow who resided in the home
of her brother-in-law and sister, Sinclair and Martha
Watts UN14.
This census recorded that she was born in June 1827 in Indiana UN14. According
to a gravestone located in Memory Cemetery in Page County, Iowa, “Mary J. Wife
of James M. Pinnick” was born on June 24, 1828 and died on October 18, 1905 (a
photo of the gravestone can be found on the Find
a Grave website).
Abram Holiday was born about 1831 in Indiana, according to
the 1850 census UN10. Abram “Haladay” married Malinda Murray on
April 19, 1853 in Orange County, Indiana IN21. He may have been the Abram Holiday who was
enumerated in Richland Township, Miami County, Kansas in 1900; this Abram was
born in June 1830 in Illinois to parents who were born in North Carolina, and
his wife was named Melinda UN14. In 1910, Abraham Holiday was an
eighty-year-old widow who lived in Liberty Township, Elk County, Kansas UN15, and gravestones for Abram
and Malinda A. Holiday are located at Mount Zion Cemetery in Cave Springs, Elk
County, Kansas. The gravestone for Abram states that he was born on June 8,
1830 and died on March 8, 1912 (a
photo of the gravestone can be found on the Find
a Grave website).
John Holiday was born about 1833 UN10 or 1831 OS1. He may have been the John Holliday who married Catharine Emerick
on November 22, 1860 in Taylor County, Iowa IO8. John and Catharine Holladay lived in
Indianola, Warren County, Iowa in 1900; the census enumerator recorded that
John was born in December 1832 in Illinois to parents who were born in North
Carolina UN14.
John Holladay, the son of Jessie Holladay and a mother whose surname was
“Osborn”, died at age eighty-three on March 4, 1916 in Indianola, Warren
County, Iowa IO4. Elizabeth
Ellen Holiday was born
in February 1834 in Indiana UN14 or on
February 5, 1833, according to her gravestone. Robert Holiday was born about 1837 UN10.
Lindis and Lindon were born about 1839 UN10 or 1840 OS1. Corporal Lindus Holliday of Sylvania mustered into Company A of the 85th Indiana Infantry on August 1, 1862 and
died at Nicholasville, Kentucky on December 10, 1862 TE6. A gravestone for Corporal Lindus Holiday of Company A, 85th Indiana Infantry is located at Rush
Creek Cemetery in Tangier, Parke County, Indiana. Lindon Holladay was born on February 4, 1839 and died on April 13,
1922, according to his gravestone, which is
located in Elmwood Cemetery in Woodward County, Oklahoma (a photo of the
gravestone can be found on the Find a
Grave website). Linden Holliday married Rachel Wininger
on December 28, 1865 in Taylor County, Iowa IO8. In
1900, Linden and Rachel Holladay resided in Dallas Township, Taylor County,
Iowa; this census recorded that Linden was born in February 1835 in Indiana to
parents who were born in North Carolina UN14.
Martha Holiday was
born in June 1844 in Indiana UN14 or on
June 25, 1844 OS1. Martha
A. Holliday married Sinclair Watts on January 1, 1867 in Parke County, Indiana IN21. Martha and Sinclair Watts lived with her sister, Mary Jane Pinnick, in Champaign County, Illniois
in 1900 UN14. Her gravestone (a photo of which is located on the Find a Grave website) at Woodlawn
Cemetery in Urbana, Champaign County, Illinois stated that she was born on June
25, 1844 and died on October 31, 1914. Charles Holiday was born about 1847 UN10, OS1 and died at the age of seven OS1.
According to her
headstone at Newberry Friends Cemetery in Orange County, Indiana, Abigail died
at the age of forty-six years and thirteen days on November 2, 1851. The Lost River Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution stated that her
gravestone at Newberry Friends Cemetery indicated that Abigail Holaday was born on October 20, 1805 and died on November
2, 1851 LO12.
