Jacob Merrill, and Stephen Emery, and was proved before Benjamin Greenleaf,
Esquire, Judge of the Probate of Wills in Essex County, on January 3, 1785 ES7. The total value of his estate was appraised at 811 pounds, six

In the Name of
God Amen, August 4th Anno Dom. 1784 I Nathan Chase of
Newbury in the County of Essex in the Commonwealth of the Massachusetts in
America, being weak in Body, but of a sound disposing Mind & Memory, do
make and ordain this to be my last Will & Testament, Principally and first
of I humbly commit my Soul into the hand of God who gave it, and my Body I
commit to the Earth to be buried in decent Christian Burial at the discretion
of my Executors and my worldly Goods I dispose of in following Manner, viz
Impr. My Will is that all my just debts funeral Charges & the Charges of
settling my Estate be first paid by my Executor out of my Estate Item My Will
is that my loving wife Ruth Chase should Peaceably enjoy her Right of Dower
which by law she is entitled to her for her comfortable Subsistance during
Life. Item I give my son Nathan Chase the sum of five Pounds six shillings and
eight pence lawful Money or other Specie equivalent to be paid by my Executor
within one Year after my Decease, and I do confirm to my son Nathan what I have
given him in my Life Time. Item I give to my son John Chase the sum of thirteen
six shillings & Eight pence lawful Money or other Specie equivalent besides
what I have given him in my Life Time to be paid by my Extors in two Years
after my decease. Item I give to the Children of my son Josiah Chase deceased
the Sum of one Dollar each exclusive of what I have given their Father in his
Life Time to be paid by my Executors in one Year after my Decease. Item I give
to my son Moses Chase the sum of six shillings besides what I have given him in
my Life Time to be paid by my Executors in one year after my decease. Item I
give my son Parker Chase the sum of one pound six shillings and eight pence
besides what I have given him in my Life Time to be paid by my Executors in
three years after my Decease. Item I give to my son Stephen Chase the sum of
one pound six shillings and eight pence Lawful money or other Specie equivalent
beside what I have given him in my Life Time to be paid by Executors in three
Years after my Decease. Item I give to my two Daughters Mary Emory & Judith
Robie two thirds of my household Goods & Utensils in the house for
housekeeping to be equally divided between them. Item I give to my two grand
Children the Children of my Daughter Lydia Johnson deceased, viz. Isaac &
Martha six shillings each to be paid by my Executors in one Year after my
Decease. Item I give to my two sons Edmund Chase & Jonathan Chase their
Heirs and Assigns forever, all the Rest of my Estate both real & personal
(including the thirds at my wifes decease) not disposed of in this my will or
conveyed in my Life Time by way of Gift to my other Children. Lastly I do
hereby constitute and appoint my two sons Edmund Chase and Jonathan Chase the
sole Executors of this my last will & Testament to pay all my just Debts,
funeral Charges and the several Legacies given in this my will, renouncing all
other & former Wills by me made, ratifying and confirming this and no other
to be my last will and Testament. In Witness where of I the said Nathan Chase
have hereunto set my hand & seal the year & day above written.
