Franklin Pierce was
born in England and married Rebeca, according to the death certificate for his
son, James E. Pierce. His marriage probably occurred sometime before 1815, as
James was born in January 1816. Neither a baptismal record for James Pierce, or
any sort of record for an individual named Franklin Pierce, who resided in
England at the turn of century and married Rebecca, has been found.
There was a large
Pearce family in Kent, England, with similar names of Francis and Rebecca
Pearce, but it seems rather unlikely that James Pierce was a member of this
family. Francis Pearce married Rebecca Cox on February 22, 1791 or February 22,
1792 in Marden Parish, Kent, England EN6.
They were the parents of twelve children. Their first four
children, Francis, Rebecca, Ann, and Elizabeth, were baptized in Marden
Parish in Kent in the years 1792 through 1797, and their next eight children,
Sarah, Jesse, Thomas, Philadelphia, James, Richard, Hester, and Frances, were
baptized in Maidstone, Kent in the years 1800 through 1815 EN4. Francis and Rebecca did have a son named
James, but this James Pierce was baptized at All Saints Church in Maidstone,
Kent on March 1, 1807, rather than in 1816 EN4.
Further, he died on January 5, 1823 EN5,
which is after the birthdate of James Pierce (the father of Esther Jane
Pierce); while it was a fairly common practice for
parents to reuse the names of their deceased children for their newborns of the
same gender, it was much less common to bestow the identical name of a living
child onto another child. The final baptismal record found for a child of
Francis and Rebecca was for a daughter named Frances Pearce, who was baptized
on June 13, 1815 in Maidstone, Kent EN4,
which precludes another child born in January 1816, unless Frances was baptized
much later than her actual birthdate. Francis and Rebecca Pearce died on August
22, 1828 and June 7, 1820 in Maidstone, Kent EN5, respectively.
Rebeca was born in England, according to the death
certificate for her son, James E. Pierce, and her name was probably spelled
“Rebecca”.
