Samuell Hartwell (William, Jasan) was (as “Samuel”) born on the 26th day of the 1st month, 1645 to William and Jasan Hartwell, according to the records of Concord, Middlesex County, Massachusetts MA26. Samewell Heartwell married Routh Wheeler on October 26, 1665, according to the Concord, Middlesex County, Massachusetts records MA26. A transcription of the land owned by Samuel “Heartwel” in Concord, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, which was dated December 26, 1666, follows CO43:

He may have been the Samuel Hartwell who served under Captain Nicholas Manning during King Philip’s War; this Samuel received one pound and ten shillings on June 24, 1676 BO2. His father mentioned him throughout his will, dated December 19, 1689 MA64:
… having also by ye like deed of gift given an hundred acres to my younger son[n]e Samuel, seventy three of which hundred hee is already possessed of. My will is that hee shall have to make up the said hunded acres twenty seven acres of Upland out of my Land which lyeth neare Mr Ephraim Flynts his [the previous word was smudged and uncertain] great Meadow, which said twenty seven acres shall be of that which lyeth nearest the meeting house…
Also I bequeath to my son[n]e Samuel, & to his heyres & Assignes for ever my prsent dwelling house & house-lot wth ye other Buildings upon it, Two acres & an halfe of broken up land. & the other halfe of ye little swampe before mentioned, wth a little peice of meadow about two acres wth ye Upland adjoyning to it upon ye playne behind ye Hills adjoyning to that of which hee is already possessed. Also six acres of meadow adjoyning to the seven given to my son[n]e John as is before exprssed, & foure acres of Upland adjoyning to it on ye South: Also five acres of upland more or Lesse at ye end of ye Bounds not yet layd out lying towards Mr Lawes [the previous surname is uncertain and may state “Lanes”] farme. Also six acres of Upland more or Lesse upon the old meeting house-frame-swampe adioyning to Deacon Myriams Land on ye North, & to James Taylers on the South, Also three acres in Chesnut feild adioyning to Mr Ephraim Flynts pond on the West. Also ye other third part of my Land in the oxe Pasture adioyning next to John Farewells Land: Also three acres of Upland more or lesse lying behind the Hill bounded by the Land which he had of his father in law George Wheeler on the South, by the Land of my son[n]e John, on the North, [the next two words appear to be crossed out] by the Land of Samuel Jones on ye Southwest, & adjoyning to the Pond which ye East quarter gave him the said Samuel my son[n]e, Also foure acres of Meadow in the great Meadow, adioyning to that acre of which hee is already possessed, so that my Will is that hee have all the five acres, bounded by Eliphalet Foxe on ye South, by William Baker on ye North, & the great River on ye West, & the Upland on the East, Also on Acre in Cedar Swampe, Also I bequeath to him all my right & Interest in the additionall tract of Land given by the Generall Cort to the Towne, com[m]only called the Village: All these Parcells of Land abovesaid not to be enioyed by my said Son[n]es John & Samuel till after the Decease of my beloved wife Jesan, except the twenty seven acres to make up the hundred given to my son[n]e Samuel.
After the death of his first wife, Ruth (who died on December 19, 1713), he may have married an individual named Rebeckah, because a Concord death record indicated that Rebeckah Hartwel, the wife of Samll Hartwell, died on January 23, 1721/2 MA26. Samll Heartwell of Concord and Elisabeth Fletcher of Chelmsford were married by Justice Minott on February 6, 1723/4, according to the records of Concord, Middlesex County, Massachusetts MA26. Samuell Hartwell of Concord wrote his will on February 12, 1721/2 AM1:
In The name of God: amen: The Twelth = = Day of February: Seventeen hundred Twenty and one: Two: I Samuell Hartwell of Concord in ye County of Middlesix within The Province of The Massachusets Bay in Newengland yeoman; being old and yet of Parfect memory thanks be given unto God: Therefore Calling to mind the Mortality of my Body, and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to Dye, do make and ordain This my Last Will and Testament; That is to Say; Principally and first of all; I Give and Recommend my Soul into ye hands of God that Gave it; and my Body I Recommend to the Earth, to be Buried in a Decent Christian Burial, at ye discretion of my Executors; nothing doubting but at ye Generall Resurrection I Shall receive the Same again by the mighty Power of God and as Touching Such worldly Estate where with it hath pleased God to Bless me in this world, I Give Devise and Dispose of the Same in The following manner and form

Ruth Wheeler (George, Katherine) was the daughter of George Wheeler of Concord, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, according to his will which he wrote on January 28, 1684 and which named his children, including Ruth Hartwell AM1, MA60:
I give to my daughter Foxes Children six pounds equall amongst them: I give to my four daughters Elizabeth Fletcher: Sarah Dudly, Ruth Hartwell & Hanah Fletcher: the sume of fifteen pounds A piece in good & Currant Countery pay to be paid to them in Concord Corrant price
She was also acknowledged as his daughter by his deed of land to her on January 23, 1681/2 CO43:

Ruth was the mother of Samewell, Mary, Reuth, William, John, Hanna, and Joseph MA26, and she was also probably the mother of Elizabeth, Sarah, Abigall, Rebecca, Jane, and Jonathan.
Samewell Heartwell, the son of Samewell and Ruth, was born on October 2, 1666, according to the records of Concord, Middlesex County, Massachusetts MA26. Samuell Hartwell was mentioned in his father’s will, dated February 12, 1721/2 AM1. Samuell Hartwell married Abegail Stearnes on November 23, 1692, according to the records of Concord, Middlesex County, Massachusetts MA26. Samll and Abegail (or Abigail) Hartwell were the parents of seven children whose births were recorded in Concord, Middlesex County, Massachusetts MA26. These were Samll, born on November 12, 1693, Abegail, born on November 27, 1695, Joseph, born on August 11, 1698, Mary, born on January 13, 1700/01, Isaac, born on November 22, 1703, Ephraim, born on January 14, 1706/7, and Lydia, born on May 2, 1709 MA26.
On January 4, 1693/4, Samuel Hartwell, Jr. purchased a parcel of eighteen acres of land from Richard Rice of Concord, Middlesex County, Massachusetts for the sum of twenty-five pounds MI29. The first part of the deed which appears in Volume 10 is partially illegible, but a partial transcription states MI29:
To all Christian People to whome this prsent deed of sale shall come… Concord in the County of Middx within the Province of the Massachusetts… Sendeth greeting Know ye that I ye said Richard Rice… moveing, but in particular the Consideration of the Sum of Twenty… [probably twenty-five pounds, which is the amount written in the margin] money of New England to me in hand truly and honestly paid before the Ensealing and Delivery of these prsents by Samuel Hartwell junr of ye said Town and County… Have given granted bargained and Sold Aliened Enfeooffed Conveyed and Confirmed… A Certaine Tract of Land… Containing by Estimation Eighteen Acres be the same more or less, within the Limits and bounds of Concord aforesaid in the East part of the Town…
The next record in Volume 10 pertains to the quit claim to Samuel Hartwell by Abigail Read, the wife of Dr. Phillip Read, and her two sons; Abigail Read was likely the daughter of Richard Rice MI29:
Know all men by these prsents we whose names are under written, namely Abigail Read wife… Phillip Read & also Phillip Read junr and Jacob Read sonnes to sd Dr Read all of Concord Considerations us there unto moveing Have and hereby do for our selves and our heires fully and Absolutely Remise release and for ever quitt Claime unto ye within named Samuell Hartwell in his peaceable possession and seizin, and to his heires and Assignes for ever All our… Right Title Interest Inheritance Claime and Demand Whatsoever. of to and in the within bargained and granted premises, and every part thereof. Abegail (Stearnes) Hartwell likely died sometime after the birth of Lydia. Samll Hartwell of Concord and Rebeca Meads of Weston were married by William Williams, a minister of the Gospel, on May 5, 1714 in Weston, Middlesex County, Massachusetts PE20. This marriage record conflicts with a Concord death record for Rebeckah Hartwell, the wife of Samll Hartwell, which indicates that she died on April 19, 1714 MA26. On May 29, 1717, Samuell Hartwell of Concord married Margaret Tompkins, according to the Salem, Essex County, Massachusetts records VI33. Margarett Heartwell, the wife of Samll Heartwell, died on April 5, 1723, according to the records of Concord, Middlesex County, Massachusetts MA26. At some point after this, Samuell married an individual named Experience. On June 24, 1735, Samuel Hartwell drew lot number seven in Narraganset Township Number 6 on behalf of his father BO2. His Concord death record states that Samuel Hartwell, the husband of Experience, died at age seventy-eight years and two months on November 27, 1744 MA26.
Mary Heartwell, the daughter of Samewell and Ruth, was born on February 16, 1667, according to the records of Concord, Middlesex County, Massachusetts MA26.
Revth (Reuth) Heartwell, the daughter of Samewell and Revth, was born on October 17, 1669, according to the records of Concord, Middlesex County, Massachusetts MA26. Ruth Hartwell was mentioned in her father’s will, dated February 12, 1721/2 AM1. Ruth Hartwell was still alive on on May 14, 1746 when she was mentioned in her brother John Hartwell’s will AM1. The probate record for Ruth Hartwell of Concord indicated that she died intestate as a single woman; an inventory of her estate was conducted by the administrator, Josiah Hartwell, on May 16, 1757 MA64. She died sometime prior to February 19, 1757, when on that date her brother, Jonathan Hartwell, wrote a notice to S. Danforth, the Judge of Probate for Middlesex County, which stated MA64:
Sir. I am an old man and had Reather not administer on ye Estate of my Sister Ruth Hartwell Decasied and Pray that my Son Josiah Hartwell may administer in my Room; if your Honr Doth not allow this I Pray you would Send up a Blank bond to me; and I will Take it my Selfe: but had Reather you would Do it… I am your Honrs most Humble Sarvant
William Heartwell, the son of Samewell and Routh, was born on August 19, 1671, according to the records of Concord, Middlesex County, Massachusetts MA26. William Hartwell, the father of Samuel Hartwell and the grandfather of this William, wrote his will on on December 19, 1689 in which he bequeathed his fowling piece (this was a type of gun used for birds) to Samuel’s second son, William, once he reached the age of twenty-one MA64. William Hartwell and Abegail Hosmer, both of Concord, were married by Reverend Joseph Estabrook on January 18, 1702/3, according to the records of Concord, Middlesex County, Massachusetts MA26. The name of his wife is uncertain because the 1703 marriage record states that her name was Abegail Hosmer, but William’s first child was born later that same year to a mother named Ruth Hartwell MA26. His wife may have been Bridget, also called Ruth, who born on August 28, 1675 to Stiven and Abbegall Hosmer, according to the records of Concord, Middlesex County, Massachusetts MA26. William and Ruth Hartwell (or Heartwell) were the parents of six children whose births were recorded in Concord, Middlesex County, Massachusetts MA26. These were William Hartwell, born on November 5, 1703, Ruth Hartwell, born on May 14, 1705, Dorothy Hartwell, born on March 27, 1707, Danll Hartwell, born on March 20, 1708/9, Timothy Hartwell, born on September 15, 1712, and Joseph Heartwell, born on January 17, 1722/3 MA26. William Hartwell was mentioned in his father’s will, dated February 12, 1721/2 AM1. The records of Bedford, Middlesex County, Massachusetts state that William Hartwel (or Hartwell or Heartwell) died at age seventy-two years on December 11, 1742 and that Ruth Heartwell (or Hartwell), the widow of William, died at age seventy-seven on February 7 or 17, 1751/2 MA26.
John Heartwell, the son of Samewell and Routh, was born on June 18, 1673, according to the records of Concord, Middlesex County, Massachusetts MA26. John Hartwell was mentioned in his father’s will, dated February 12, 1721/2 AM1. John Heartwell married an individual named Deborah; the records of Bedford, Middlesex County, Massachusetts state that Deborah Heartwel (or Heartwell or Hartwell), the wife of John, died at age sixty-eight on June 14 or 15, 1744 MA26. The Billerica, Middlesex County records state that John Hartwell of Bedford remarried to Mrs. Mary Hill on December 3, 1744 MA26. John Hartwell, a husbandman of Bedford, Middlesex County, Massachusetts wrote his will on May 14, 1746 which named his wife, Mary, his brother, William Hartwell, his cousin, Daniel Hartwell (then deceased), and Ruth Bacon, who was the wife of Jonathan Bacon of Sutten (perhaps Sutton, Massachusetts) AM1. He also named Joseph, Samuell, Isaac, and Ephraim, who were the children of his brother, Samuell Hartwell, who was then deceased AM1. He also named his sisters, Ruth and Elizabeth Hartwell of Concord, his former sister-in-law (the sister of his first wife) named Mary Manning of Woodstock, and William and Nicholas Bowes, who were sons of Reverend Bowes of Bedford AM1. He bequeathed thirty pounds and furniture to an individual named Hannah Cary “whom I brought up” AM1. John Heartwell died at age seventy-four on November 16, 1746 or 1747, according to the records of Bedford, Middlesex County, Massachusetts MA26.
Hanna Heartwell, the daughter of Samewell and Reuth, was born on October 8, 1675, according to the records of Concord, Middlesex County, Massachusetts MA26. Hanah Hartwell and Thomas Hosmer, both of Concord, were married by Justice Russell on February 18, 1695/6, according to the records of Concord, Middlesex County, Massachusetts MA26. Hanah (or Hannah) and Thomas Hosmer were the parents of five children whose births were recorded in Concord, Middlesex County, Massachusetts MA26. These were Hanah, born on November 20, 1697, Sarah, born on October 7, 1700, Thomas, born on February 7, 1703, Mary, born on March 9, 1706/7, and James, born on February 26, 1708/9 MA26. Hannah Hosmar was mentioned in her father’s will, dated February 12, 1721/2 AM1. Thomas Hosmer died on November 2, 1754, and Hannah Hosmer, his wife, died on January 5, 1755, according to the records of Concord, Middlesex County, Massachusetts MA26.
Elizab[eth] Hartwell, the daughter of Saml., was born on the 23rd day of the 8th month, 1677, according to the records of Concord, Middlesex County, Massachusetts MA26. Elizabeth Hartwell was mentioned in her father’s will, dated February 12, 1721/2, indicating that she had not married by this time AM1. Elizabeth Hartwell was alive on on May 14, 1746 when she was mentioned in her brother John Hartwell’s will AM1.
Sarah Hartwell, the daughter of Saml., was born on the 10th day of the 5th month, 1679, according to the records of Concord, Middlesex County, Massachusetts MA26. Sarah Hartwell had likely not married by the time she was mentioned in her father’s will, dated February 12, 1721/2 AM1.
Abigall Hartwell, the daughter of Sam, was born on the 1st day of the 3rd month, 1681, according to the records of Concord, Middlesex County, Massachusetts MA26. Abigail Hartwell of Concord and Shubael Childs of Weston were married by Reverend John Whiting on June 24, 1718, according to the records of Weston, Middlesex County, Massachusetts PE20. Abigail and Shubal Child were the parents of Mary, born in Weston on September 23, 1719, and of Shubal, born in Weston on July 16, 1721 PE20. Abigaill Childes was mentioned in her father’s will, dated February 12, 1721/2 AM1. Abigail Child, the “aged widow” of “Shu:” died at about age seventy-five on October 8, 1756, according to the records of Weston, Middlesex County, Massachusetts PE20.
Rebecca Hartwell, the daughter of Samuel, was born on the 14th day of the 12th month, 1682, according to the records of Concord, Middlesex County, Massachusetts MA26. Rebeckah Hartwell and Simeon Hayward, who were both of Concord, were married by Reverend Joseph Estabrook on October 23, 1705, according to the records of Concord, Middlesex County, Massachusetts MA26. Rebeckah (or Rebecca or Rebekah) and Simeon (or Simmeon) Hayward (or Heyward) were the parents of seven children whose births were recorded in Concord, Middlesex County, Massachusetts MA26. These were Josiah Hayward, born on May 29, 1707, Mary Hayward, born on December 6, 1708, Abigail Hayward, born on January 21, 1710/11, Samuel Heyward, born on April 5, 1713, Joseph Hayward, born on April 16, 1715, Simmeon Hayward, born on April 17, 1717, and Ebenezar Hayward, born on July 11, 1719 after the death of his father MA26. Simeon Howard, the husband of Rebekah, died at age thirty-five years and eleven months on May 18, 1719 MA26. Between the death of Simeon and the time her father wrote his will on February 12, 1721/2, Rebeckah likely married an individual with the surname “Temple”, as she was called Rebecah Temple in her father’s will. Mrs. Rebekah Temple was called “formerly the wife of Mr. Simeon Hayward” in her Concord death record, which states that she died at age ninety-four on March 29, 1776 MA26.
Jane Hartwell, the daughter of Sam, was born on the 30th day of the 9th month, 1684, according to the records of Concord, Middlesex County, Massachusetts MA26. She was not mentioned in her father’s will.
Jonathan Hartwell was mentioned in his father’s will, dated February 12, 1721/2 AM1. Jonathan Hartwell and Hannah Blancher were married by Justice Minott on June 11, 1713, according to the records of Concord, Middlesex County, Massachusetts MA26. Jonathan and Hanah (or Hannah) Hartwell were the parents of three children whose births were recorded in Concord, Middlesex County, Massachusetts MA26. These were James, born on July 30, 1715, Josiah, born on September 11, 1717, and Nathan, born on December 4, 1719 MA26. Jonathan and Hannah Hartwell were the parents of four children whose births and deaths were recorded in Littleton, Middlesex County, Massachusetts MA26. These were Simon, born on September 24, 1721, Hannah, born on April 12, 1723, Joseph, who was born on January 27, 1724/5 and died on October 24, 1739, and Benjamin, who was born on June 11, 1734 but died on September 8, 1739 MA26. He also stated (in a letter to the probate judge regarding the administration of the estate of his sister, Ruth Hartwell) that he was the father of Josiah Hartwell MA64. According to the inscriptions of gravestones for Jonathan and Hannah which were located at the Old Burying Ground at Littleton Common, Mrs. Hannah Hartwell, the wife of Mr. Jonathan Hartwell, died at age seventy-three on January 1, 1763, and Mr. Jonathan Hartwell died at age eighty-four on December 19, 1770 SA17.
