Thomas Mills (John) was the son of John Mills BJ1, BJ2, and was born about
the year 1709, likely near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania BJ2. According to the
minutes of the Chester Monthly Meeting, Thomas Mills and Elizabeth Harrold, the
daughter of the widow Mary Harrold of “Monoquisy”
near the Potomac River, declared their intent to marry for the second time on
the 30th day of the 3rd month, 1730 BJ2. The Monocacy River is a tributary of the Potomac, and this
area was the site of a Quaker settlement established in about 1725 BJ2. The records of the New Garden Monthly Meeting
in Chester County, Pennsylvania stated that “Thomas Mills son of John Mills of Manoquisy near ye River Potomack”,
married Elizabeth Harrold, the daughter of Mary Harrold, at the residence of
Josiah Ballengars at Monoquisy
(Monocacy) on the 18th day of the 4th month in 1730 (June
18, 1730) US11,
BJ1, BJ2. As was customary for Quaker weddings,
dozens of witnesses to the ceremony signed their names or made their mark on their name. Family members
who were witnesses included John Mills, Rebeckah
Mills, Hur Mills, John Mills, Jr., Mary Harrold,
William Beals, Liddie Beals, Sarah Beals Sr., Sarah Beals Jr., and Martha Wright BJ1.
Records
from the Chester Quarterly Meeting dated in November 1738 and August 1742
stated that Thomas Mills was a member of the Hopewell Monthly Meeting in
Frederick County, Virginia BJ2, WA26.
He purchased land on Opequon Creek in Virginia from
his father for the sum of five shillings in 1743 BJ2. The Hopewell Monthly Meeting record
dated April 4, 1748 stated that Thomas and Hur Mills
were appointed to speak with John Ross, and ask him to attend the next meeting BJ2, WA26. Thomas was a witness to the wedding of
Evan Rogers and Sarah Ballinger on June 15, 1749 at Hopewell WA26.
He
and his family relocated from Opequon Creek in modern
day Frederick County, Virginia, to the Cane Creek Monthly Meeting in Orange
(Alamance) County in North Carolina, where Thomas, John, Hurr,
and Henry Mills were received on September 1, 1753 with a certificate dated May
7, 1753 from Hopewell Monthly Meeting HI4, WA26. Thomas was an
original member of the New Garden Monthly Meeting in Rowan (now called
Guilford) County, North Carolina HI4, BJ2, as he requested a
certificate from New Garden on September 28, 1754, but he was disowned from New
Garden on March 29, 1760 HI4. Thomas Mills died at age eighty-four on
September 10, 1793, according to the records of the Deep River Monthly Meeting,
located in Guilford County, North Carolina US11, HI4, BJ2.
Elizabeth Harrold (Richard, Mary) was born on May 10, 1711,
according to the records of the New Garden Monthly Meeting in Chester County,
Pennsylvania US11, BJ2. She said to have been the mother of Mary,
Rachel, Richard, Rebeckah, Ruben, Thomas, and Martha BJ2.
The
records of the New Garden Monthly Meeting in Guilford County, North Carolina
state that Mary Mills, the daughter of Thomas Mills, married John
Hodson, the son of George Hodson of Roan County, North Carolina, on the 7th day of the 5th
month, 1754 US11. The records of the
New Garden Monthly Meeting state that John and Mary Hodson were the parents of
ten children, who were Thomas, born on the 21st day of the 2nd
month, 1756, Sarah, born on the 14th day
of the 10th month, 1757, John, born on the 28th day of the 6th
month, 1759, Ruth, born on the 10th day
of the 3rd month, 1761, George, born on the 6th day of the 1st
month, 1763, Jonathan, born on the 10th day
of the 3rd month, 1765, Hur, born on the 16th day of the 5th
month, 1767, Mary, born on the 9th day
of the 5th month, 1769, Solomon, born on the 31st day of the 3rd
month, 1771, and Joseph, born on the 13th day
of the 8th month, 1773 US11.

Richard Mills was born
about 1740, probably in Frederick County, Virginia BJ2. Richard was said to have married Hannah about 1766 BJ2. Richard and Hannah Mills were the parents of thirteen children
whose births were recorded in the register of the Deep River Monthly Meeting in
Guilford County, North Carolina BJ2.
These were Asa, born on January 1, 1767, Jacob, born on April 15, 1768,
Elizabeth, born on September 4, 1769, Hur, born on
August 8, 1771, William, born on June 15, 1773, Thomas, who was born on
December 24, 1774 and died on December 3, 1775,
Richard, born on October 13, 1776, Hannah, who was born on February 11, 1778 and died on August 13, 1778, Joseph, born on
July 6, 1779, Catherine, born on June 30, 1781, Rachel, born on July 1, 1783,
Reuben, born on December 26, 1786, and Jonathan, born on October 21, 1789 BJ2. The records of the Lost Creek Monthly Meeting in Jeffererson County, Tennessee state that Richard Mills died
on October 19, 1813 and that Hannah, the wife of Richard Mills, died at age
eighty-eight on January 21, 1833 US11, BJ2.
Rebeckah Mills was said
to have been born on the 15th day of the 12th month, 1744 BJ2. The records of the Springfield Monthly Meeting
in Wayne County, Indiana state that Rebecca Thornburgh was born on the 30th day of the
4th month,
1744 US11, US21. The
records of the New Garden Monthly Meeting in Guilford County, North Carolina
state that Rebeckah Mills, the daughter of Thos:
Mills of Roan County, North Carolina, married William Morgan of Roan County,
North Carolina, the son of John Morgan (deceased, of Virginia) on the 10th day of the 7th
month, 1760 (July 10, 1760) in New Garden, Roan County in a ceremony witnessed
by Elizabeth Mills, Sarah Mills, John Mills, Hur
Mills, John Hodgson, and others US11, BJ2. Rebeckah and William Morgan were the parents of five
children whose births were recorded in the minutes of the New Garden Monthly
Meeting in Guilford County, North Carolina US11.
These were Ruben, born on the December 18, 1761, John, born on August 26, 1763,
Thos: (Thomas), born on November 7, 1765, Elizabeth,
born on November 13, 1767, and William, born on March 2, 1770 US11. According to the New Garden Monthly Meeting in Guilford
County, William Morgan died on April 7, 1771 US11. The records of the New Garden Monthly Meeting in Guilford
County, North Carolina state that Rebekah Morgan, the widow of William Morgan,
married Joseph Thornburgh, the son of Thomas Thornburgh of Guilford County,
North Carolina on February 5, 1778 US11, BJ2. Rebecah was called the second wife of Joseph Thornbrough in the records of the Deep River Monthly
Meeting in Guilford County, North Carolina, which stated they were the parents
of five children US11. These were Wellmett, born on November 30, 1778, Morgan, born on May 9,
1781, Joseph, born on October 10, 1782, Asahel, who was born on February 5,
1786 and died on March 20, 1790, and Abigail, born on March 30, 1788 US11. The records of the Springfield
Monthly Meeting in Wayne County, Indiana state that Rebecca Thornburgh died at
age seventy-seven years, four months, and twenty days on September 20, 1821 and
that Joseph Thornburgh died at age eighty-one on August 6, 1823 and that both
Rebecca and Joseph were buried at Springfield US11, US21.

daughter of Charles Johnson, deceased, on the 11th day of the 8th month, 1773 (August

and Cicilia Mills were the parents of two children
whose births were recorded in the minutes of the New Garden Monthly Meeting in
Guilford County, North Carolina US11.
These were Sarah, who was born on August 2, 1774 and died on June 21, 1775, and
Elizabeth, born on June 12, 1775 US11. Cicilia Mills died on December 27, 1775 in Guilford County,

Guilford County, North Carolina state that Reuben Mills of Guilford County married
Sarah Overman on the 7th day of the 8th month, 1777 (August 7, 1777) US11. Witnesses

the Concord Monthly Meeting in eastern Ohio on January 19, 1808 from a
certificate from the Deep River Monthly Meeting in North Carolina, dated
September 7, 1807 HI14.

state that Thomas Mills “of Guilford County in North Carolina, son of
Thomas & Eleazabeth Mills (the Latter Deceased)”
married Jemimah Jones, the daughter of Richard and Jemima Jones of Surry
County, North Carolina, on October 11, 1780 in a ceremony which was witnessed
by Thomas Mills, Richard Mills, Rueben Mills, Aron Mills, and others US11. The minutes of the Deep River Monthly Meeting in Guilford
County, North Carolina state that Thomas and Jamima
Mills were the parents of eight children US11.
These were Daniel, born on August 13, 1781, Richard, born on September 13,
1783, Elizabeth, born on June 5, 1785, Jemima, who was born on September 30,
1787 and died on June 24, 1795, Rhoda, born on February 22, 1790, Sarah, born
on February 12, 1792, Thomas, who was born on November 10, 1793 and died on May
15, 1794, and Martha, who was born on May 16, 1795 and died don July 19, 1795 US11. Thomas Mills made a plan to relocate to the Cane Creek Monthly
Meeting of South Carolina on January 7, 1793, and in March 1795 Thomas and his
wife, Jemima, presented a certificate to the Deep River Monthly Meeting for
himself, his wife, and their daughters, Elizabeth, Jemima, and Sarah, from the “Cain
Creek” Monthly Meeting in South Carolina, which was dated January 24, 1795 and
was accepted by the Deep River Monthly Meeting US11. However, the minutes of the Deep River Monthly Meeting in
Guilford County, North Carolina state that Thomas Mills died on June 10, 1795 US11, while Gwen Bjorkman stated that Thomas Mills died in 1801 in
Guilford County, North Carolina BJ2.
The
records of the New Garden Monthly Meeting in Guilford County, North Carolina
state that Martha Mills, the daughter of Thos. Mills of Guilford County, North Carolina married Obadiah
Overman on the 12th day of the 2nd month, 1778 (February 12, 1778) in a ceremony witnessed by
Sarah Mills, Hannah Mills, Mary Hodgson, Thos.
Mills, John Mills, Ruben Mills, and others US11, HI4, BJ2. The
records of the Center Monthly Meeting in Guilford County, North Carolina state
that Martha and Obadiah Overman were the parents of two children, who were
Isaac, born on February 18, 1779, and Elizabeth, born on February 1, 1781 US11. Martha Overman, the wife of Obadiah, died on June 25, 1784 US11.
Elizabeth Mills died at age sixty on the 9th day of the 9th month, 1771 (September
9, 1771) and was buried the following day, according to the records of the New
Garden Monthly Meeting in Guilford County, North Carolina US11, HI4, BJ2.
