William Cook, Sr., the likely father of the William Cook who married Sena
Brotherton, may have been the son of Nathaniel Cook and Katharine Bollinger.
William was born about 1850 UN11 or 1852 UN12 and
married “Orleana M. Hanner” on November 7, 1871 MI15. His
father, Nathaniel Cook, was born
about 1823 UN11 or 1825 in Missouri UN10, UN11 and Catherine (Bollinger MI17) Cook was
born about 1820 UN10,
UN12 or 1822 UN11 in
Missouri UN10, UN11,
UN12. Nathaniel Cook married
Katharine Bollinger on January 25, 1848 in Cape Girardeau County, Missouri MI17. In 1860, Nathaniel and
Catherine lived in Union Township, Bollinger County, Missouri UN11, but in 1870, Kate Cook was the head of
the household in Union Township, and so Nathaniel
may have died between 1863, when Kate’s son Jacob was born, and 1870, when he
was absent from the household UN12. Katharine Cook was the mother of eight
or nine known children who were born in Missouri: Sarah, Mary, William, John
Franklin, Martha, Jane (or James), Allen, and Jacob. Sarah was born about 1848 UN11, 1849 UN10, or
1850 UN12. Mary was born about July 1850 as she was four months old in
November 1850 UN10, but may have died before the 1860 US Census. William Cook was born about 1850 UN11 or 1852 UN12. Kate’s
twins John and Martha (or Patsy) were born about 1851 UN11 or 1853 UN12. According
to his Dunklin County, Missouri death certificate, John Franklin Cook was born on December 2, 1852 in Patton, Missouri
to Nathaniel Cook and Kate Bollinger, who were both born in North Carolina. He
died at age eighty-three in Clay Township, Dunklin County on February 4, 1936.
This birthdate would likely have been the same for his twin sister, Martha. The
census enumerators recorded that Jane Cook
was a female who was born about 1853 UN11, but James
was a male who was born about 1856 UN12. Jane
Cook’s Dunklin County, Missouri death certificate indicated that she died as a
widow (her husband had been Jeff Cook) at age seventy-two on July 25, 1928. The
death certificate stated that her father, “Nathen” Cook, was born in “Sedwickville MO” and her unidentified mother was born in
Patton, Missouri; Jane was born on September 2, 1855 in Marble Hill, Missouri. Allen was born about 1854 UN11 or 1858 UN12 and Jacob was born about 1863 UN12. In 1870, Kate’s youngest sons, John, James, Allen, and
Jacob, were listed in that order, and all but James worked on the farm. The
occupation of her daughters, Sarah and Patsy, as well as James, was “At Home” UN12. Catherine Cook was deceased
by November 9, 1874, when on that day a Guardian and Curator’s Bond was filed
in the Probate Court of Bollinger County, Missouri, and William M. Cook was
appointed as the guardian of Jacob N. Cook, a minor heir of Catherine Cook, and
as the curator of his estate MI35.

Orlena M. Hannah (William, Amanda) was also called “Orleria M.
Hannah” UN11. She was the
probable mother of William J. Cook and she was born about 1852 UN12, 1853 UN11, 1854 UN13, or in July
1854 UN14 in Missouri UN11, UN12, UN13 to William James and Maria Hannah UN11, UN12. “Orleana M. Hanner” married William
Cook in Bollinger County, Missouri on November 7, 1871 MI15. This William probably died after
becoming a father to his son William J. Cook, but before 1877, because “Orleans
M. Cook” married “Ervin T. Russel” on March 4, 1877 in Bollinger County MI15. In 1880, Irvin T. Russel was
enumerated in Whitewater Township, Bollinger County with his wife, Orlena M.
Russel, his stepson, William Cook, who was born about 1873 in Missouri, and his
daughter, Amanda C. Russel, born about 1878 UN13. In
that census, Orlena stated that her father was born in Kentucky, and her mother
was born in Tennessee UN13.
Irvine T. Russle (or Ervin T. Russell) and Orlena M. Russle/Russell were
enumerated in 1900 and 1910 in Whitewater Township, Bollinger County UN14, UN15. It is possible
that Irvin T. and Orlena were the “Tolliver Russell” and “O. Melvina Russell”
who were enumerated in Clay Township, Dunklin County, Missouri in the household
of James C. and Amanda E. Colip in 1920 as James’ father-in-law and mother-in-law
UN16. This is
questionable for two reasons. First, Orlena’s daughter, Amanda Elizabeth
Russell, married James Caleb Long, not James C. Colip. Second, this household
was enumerated on February 10th, 1920, and Clay Township is 120 miles south of Scopus
Township, where just a handful of days earlier on February 5th or 6th, “Arlenia
M. Russell” was enumerated with the family of her son, Jesse M. Russell UN16. The
census enumerator recorded that Arlenia was
sixty-seven (and thus born about 1853) and born in Missouri to a father who was
born in Kentucky and a mother who was born in Tennessee UN16.
With Irvine T. Russle or Ervin T.
Russell, Orlena was the mother of Amanda Elizabeth, Berry Alan, Andrew, Sarah
E., Jesse Marvin, Orlena Susan C., and Myrtle Mary Russell. In 1900, Orlena
stated that she was the mother of nine children, eight of whom were alive UN14, but in 1910, just six children
remained alive UN15. Census records indicate that Amanda
Russell was born in February 1877 UN14 or
about 1878 UN13. According
to her Bollinger County, Missouri death certificate, Amanda Elizabeth Long, the wife of Caleb Long, was born to Irvin
Russell and Arlene Hanners on February 20, 1877, died at age eighty-two on October
10, 1959 in Marble Hill, Bollinger County, and was buried at Plainview
Cemetery. The 1918 World War I draft registration card for James Caleb
Long indicated that he was born in 1880, lived in Hornersville,
Dunklin County, Missouri, and that his wife was Manda Lizzibeth
Long US14. Hornersville is just west of Clay
Township, where James C. and Amanda E. “Colip” were
enumerated two years later UN16. The surname “Colip” may have been written erroneously,
because in 1920, the children of James C. and Amanda E. “Colip” were Olania,
age seven, James, age six, and Elizabeth, age two UN16, but in
1930 in Whitewater Township, Bollinger County, the children of James C. and
Mandy E. Long were Serilda O., age seventeen, James G., age sixteen, and Melia
E., age fourteen UN17. In 1920, the household of James and Amanda and her parents
was adjacent to that of Ignatious and Cordelia Welty, who had in their family
at that time Ignatious, Jesse, and Hurcle (Hersel) UN16. Their
older son, Basil Franklin Welty, had recently married Orlena’s granddaughter, Maggie
Cook, on August 14, 1919 MI17, MR1.
Berry Alan Russell was born on April 17, 1881 in Patton, Missouri to Ervin
Russell and Lena Hanners, and died while married to Effie Harvey at age
seventy-three on September 25, 1954 in Rural Shawnee, Cape Girardeau County,
Missouri, according to his death certificate. He was also buried in Plainview
Cemetery in Bollinger County. It is important to note that the 1900 US Census
recorded that a boarder named Perry A. Russell, born in April 1881 in Missouri,
resided with William H. and Mary J. Cook in their home in Commerce, Scott
County UN14. Berry
married Emma Killian not long after this. Their marriage license
issued on August 20, 1900 stated “B.A. Russell and Emma Killian”, but the
marriage license in the register stated that Emma Killian married “P.A.
Russell”, the son of E.T. Russell MI17.
Andrew Russell was born in February 1885 UN14. He may
have died by the year 1910, as further records for him have not been located,
and Orlena stated that just six of her children were alive in that year UN15. Sarah E. Russell was born in January
1887 UN14. The Cape
Girardeau County, Missouri death certificate for Sarah E. Long indicated that
she was born on January 11, 1887 in Missouri to Ervin Russell and Arlenia
Hanners, and died while married to Robert Long at age eighty-one on October 8,
1968 in Cape Osteopathic Hospital. Jesse M. Russell was born in April 1889 UN14 or about
1890 UN15. The
Bollinger County, Missouri death certificate for Jesse Marvin Russell stated that he was born to Earvin Russell and
an unknown mother on April 25, 1889 in Patton, Missouri, and died while married
to Meallie Long Russell at age sixty-one on February 4, 1951 Crooked Creek
Township, Bollinger County. His death certificate also indicated that he was to
be buried at Plainview Cemetery. According to his gravestone
in Plainview Cemetery in Hurricane, Bollinger County which he shares with Permealie A. Russell, Jesse M. Russell was born on April
25, 1889 and died on February 4, 1951 (a photo of this gravestone may be found
on the Find a Grave website). In 1920, Jesse M. and Permalie
Russell were enumerated in Scopus Township, Bollinger County with Jesse’s
mother, Arlenia M. Russell UN16.
Orlena S.C. Russell, born in August 1891 UN14,
was called Susan C. Russell in 1910
when she was eighteen UN15.
Mary M. Russell was born in October 1895 UN14 or about 1896 UN15. A Social Security claim for Myrtle Mary Key demonstrated that she
was born on October 25, 1895 in Patton, Bollinger County, Missouri to Ervin
Russell and Arlena Hanners and died on July 2, 1990 US27.
