John Marrison
★
(William, Mary) was born in September
1845 in Oldcoats, Nottinghamshire, England, according
to the 1851 UK census and the 1900 census. His death record stated that he was
born to William and Mary Ann (Gray) Marrison in
England MI5 on September 5, 1845 FE1, MI5. Finally, his own statement on June 7,
1915 to the Bureau of Pensions declared that he was born in “England Notingham shire Oldcats Sept 5” FE1. He may have been the John Marrison
whose birth was registered in the third quarter (months July, August, and
September) of the year 1845 in Worksop,
Nottinghamshire, England EN12. At age nine, on November 15, 1854, John arrived
at New York from Liverpool, England with his parents on the ship Emerald
Isle NE17.
John served in the
Civil War as a private in Company C, 177th
Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry FE1, CI3. He enrolled on August 22 or August 23, 1864 in either Rome or
New Lyme, Ohio, depending on which document in his pension file is examined FE1; Rome and New Lyme are less than four
miles apart. At the time of his enlistment, he was five feet, five and three-quarter
inches, and had a fair complexion, blue eyes, and brown hair FE1. He was reported on the rolls as present
on October 31, 1864, but in November and December 1864, he was absent due to illness
at Nashville, Tennessee FE1. He
may have been unwell from November until April, for the wording of his record
indicated that he was reported absent and sick “to” April 30, 1865 FE1.
In his Declaration for Original Invalid Pension,
on February 24, 1888, John swore that he was forty-two years old, he lived in
Eden Township, Mason County, and he had enrolled in Company C of the 177th Regiment of Ohio Volunteers on August 22,
1864 FE1. He served under Captain S.C. Reeves, and
was honorably discharged at Chester, Pennsylvania on June 22, 1865 FE1. He stated that on November 1, 1864,
while on duty at Tallahoma, Tennessee, he “contracted
gravel caused by hardships incident to the service. I also contracted chronic
diarrhea and resulting piles, and, disease of heart” FE1. He was treated at hospitals in Tallahoma, Tennessee, Jeffersonville, Indiana, and
Washington, D.C., and after he left the service, he resided in Ohio and
Michigan as a farmer, but because of his conditions acquired during the war, he
was disabled FE1. This Declaration
for Original Invalid Pension was witnessed by George Marrison,
G.A. Pierce, G.H. Blodgett, and Belle Coburn FE1.

John
Marrison married Josephine Hilliker
on February 18, 1869 in Jefferson, Ashtabula County, Ohio OH5. At the time of the 1870 US Census, John, who
was twenty-four, was married to Josephine, age nineteen, and they had a five-month-old
daughter, Estella Marrison.
John made a declaration to the Bureau of Pensions on June 7, 1915
in response to the question, “Were you previously married?” and “If there was
more than one previous marriage, let your answer include all former wives” FE1. He stated, “Was 3 Wifes one Josephene Hiliker and was Devorced from her her [sic] at Jefferson Ashtabula co I ohio and was married there she had one Girl Estala have not seen her since Divorced she was no wife to
me Just a Girl wife” FE1. A
declaration made on June 4, 1898 by John Marrison to
the Bureau of Pensions stated that he divorced Josie Hilliker
in November 1872 in Jefferson, Ohio FE1.
Estella was never mentioned on another census with John. On
July 22, 1871, John Marrison granted a Quit Claim
Deed for the same parcel of land he had received from his mother to George Marrison for the sum of $300 AS2.
Elder
R.C. Lamning (probably
Lanning) officiated the marriage of John Marrison
and Esther Pierce on May 19, 1873 in Williamston Township FE1, and according to the 1900 census, they had been married for
twenty-seven years. The record of this marriage was not located in the Record of
Marriages in 1873 for Alcona through Ingham Counties, Michigan, and neither was
it in Volume F or Volume G of the Ashtabula County, Ohio Marriage Records. John
divorced Josephine in Jefferson, Ashtabula County, Ohio in November 1872, and
his first son was born in Jefferson in April 1874, so it is more likely that he
married Esther Pierce in Ashtabula County than in Ingham County. On the other
hand, R.C. Lanning was a preacher in Dearborn
Township, Wayne County, Michigan in 1870 FA3 and in Genesee
County, Michigan in 1875 and 1875 HI17. There
was a marriage record with a peculiar similarity to Esther J. Pierce which
occurred on May 10, 1872 in Stockbridge, Ingham County, when Charles H. Wood,
age twenty-three of Williamston, Ingham County married Esther F. Pierce, age
eighteen of Wheatfield, Ingham County; this Esther Pierce was the correct age,
and she stated she was born in New York MI23. A
death record or census record from 1880 has not been located for Charles Wood,
and a marriage record for John Marrison and Esther
Wood has also not been located.
John stated that he lived in
Ashtabula County, Ohio until 1878, when he moved to Williamston Township,
Ingham County, Michigan, and he lived there until 1882, when he moved to Eden
Township, Mason County FE1. A Declaration for Invalid Pension was
filed by John on March 30, 1891 in which he stated that he was forty-four years
old, a resident of Eden Township, and that he was “Partially unable to earn a
support by reason of Heart disease Chronic Diarrhea and Piles” FE1. Witnesses to this document were Foster Hixson and
Lucinda Young FE1.
After
Esther’s death, John Marrison,
the son of William Marrison and Mary Ann Gray, married
Mary Ann (North) Woodhouse on September 22, 1908 in Mason, Ingham County,
Michigan in a ceremony officiated by John Stewart, a Baptist minister FE1, MI8, MI23; the
1910 census recorded they had been married one year UN15. John stated that “Mary ann wood House”
had previously been married to “one William Wood House” of Yorkshire, England FE1. On June 4, 1912, he stated that he was
sixty-six years old before a notary public FE1. The 1920 census stated that he could read and write and that he
owned his farm, which was next door to Emry and
Hattie Marrison’s residence UN16. According to his Mason County death certificate, he died of
Chronic Nephritis on February 9, 1921 in Eden Township, Mason County, Michigan
at age seventy-five years, five months, and four days. The Declaration of a Widow for Accrued Pension, made by Mary Ann Marrison on June 25, 1931, also stated that he died on
February 9, 1921 FE1.

Esther Jane Pierce (James, Susan) was born in December 1853
in New York UN14. Her age at the time of her death,
according to her death certificate, indicated that she was born on November 23,
1853. Esther was the mother
of Floyd Eldon, Myrta, Emry Elmer, Lena May, Adelbert Clifton, and Edward C. Marrison. Floyd Eldon Marrison, the son of John Marrison and Esther
Pierce, was born on April 22, 1874 in Jefferson, Ohio (probably Jefferson,
Ashtabula County, Ohio) MI5, FE1.
He married Lula Morse, the daughter of William F. Morse, on November 24, 1898
in Crystal, Mason County, Michigan in a ceremony officiated by George Shoup MI23.
Floyd died at age seventy-three on April 29, 1947 in Lansing, Ingham County,
Michigan MI5. Myrta was born in 1877, but died on either
March 6 or July 12, 1883, as her father, John, wrote “Myrta Marrison.
Born. 1877. Died. July. 12. 1883 March. 6” FE1.
Emry
Elmer Marrison was born on April 18, 1880 EM2, FE1.
Lena May “Morrison”, the daughter of John and Esther “Morrison”, was born on
June 1, 1882 in Williamston, Michigan IN26, FE1. She married George Woodhead on January 1, 1903 in Eden
Township, Mason County, Michigan in a ceremony officiated by John W. Perkins,
“Elder of the ME Church” MI23.
“ME” was likely an abbreviation for Methodist Episcopal. Lena Woodhead died on
September 11, 1978 in Ludington, Mason County, Michigan MI20. Adelbert Clifton Marrison was born on April 15,
1890 in Eden Township, Mason County, Michigan US28, FE1. Adelbert
died at age sixty-nine on April 24, 1959 at Paulina Stearns Hospital,
Ludington, Mason County, Michigan ED6.
Eddie C. Marrison was born on September 24, 1893 FE1, and Edward C. “Morrison”, the son of John and Esther J. “Morrison”,
died at the age of one year and eleven months in Eden Township, Mason County,
Michigan on August 28, 1895 from “cholera infantum” MI3.
According to Mildred
Fishel, Esther had some
gynecological issues and went to Ann Arbor, Michigan to undergo a hysterectomy.
The operation was considered a success, but according to her death certificate,
she died on January 26, 1901 at the Ann Arbor University Hospital in Washtenaw
County, Michigan, due to “lack of vitality” after the operation. The immediate
cause of death was heart failure. The death certificate stated that she was in
the hospital for eight days, but it also recorded conflicting dates of death,
as one portion stated that she died on January 26, 1901, and another stated
that her death occurred at 10:00am on January 27, 1901. Her age at death was
listed as forty-seven years, two months, and two days. Further, her handwritten
death certificate stated that her father’s name was Richard Pierce, but
“Richard” was crossed out, and James was written over top of this. Her mother’s
name simply had a line through the space for her given name, and listed her
surname as “Wertinburg”, and Esther’s birthplace was
written as “Can”, which also was crossed out, and “N York” was written adjacent
to this.
