Christopher
Sims was born circa 1806 in Tennessee UN10, or about 1806 in Virginia UN11. He
was a farmer, and probably died before 1870, when he was not listed on the
census with Sabrina, and he certainly died before 1880, as Sabrina was a widow
at that time. The Independence County, Arkansas death certificate for his son,
Francis Marrion Sims, dated August 4, 1917, indicated
that his father, Christopher C. Sims, was born in Kentucky. He was very likely the Christopher Sims who married Elizabeth Motsinger (spelled Malsenger) on
or after May 16, 1826 in Wilson County, Tennessee WI39. Christopher Simms and “Miss Sobrina
Whitlock” were married by Hezekiah Ferrell on November 8, 1849 in Williamson
County, Illinois IL1.
Christopher
Sims purchased one plow and coulter for $2.00, one cotton wheel for $5.06, and
one cow which was called a “blaze face” cow for $12.56 and one half from the
sale of the estate of John Motsinger, who died
sometime before June 5, 1840 MU7. He
was mentioned in a settlement of the estate of George Davis on November 6,
1848, and on May 7, 1850 he was mentioned in a list of “heirs at law” in a
record of the estate of J. Eaton MU7. The
Williamson County Court recorded that Christopher C. Sims, Elias Teal, and
James Barker were listed as guardian’s bondsmen for
Elias Teal on May 21, 1862; Elias Teal’s request to be appointed the guardian
of the minor children and heirs of the deceased William Teal (Nancy I., Mary
C., William F., Sarah A., and Elias D. Teal) was granted MO17.
A
gravestone located at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Crab Orchard, Williamson
County, Illinois states that Christopher Columbus Sims died in October 1867 at
the age of seventy-five years. A photograph of this gravestone is located on
the Find a Grave website.
There
appeared to be just two Sims families in Williamson County, Illinois in the
census years of 1850 and 1860 UN10, UN11. It
is likely that the heads of these families, John and
Christopher, were brothers. John J. Sims was born about 1800 UN10, UN12, 1801 UN10, or 1806 UN11 in
Virginia, and his family was actually enumerated twice
in Williamson County, Illinois in the 1850 US Census. His household members
were Elizabeth, another Elizabeth, May or Mary, Jefferson, Cyrus, Martha A.,
Elizabeth J., Mary F., Francis M., Soloman, Nancy, Safronia, William, Marion, and Matthew. His wife,
Elizabeth, was born in 1802 UN10,
1806 UN10, or 1810 UN11, UN12 in
Tennessee UN10, UN11, UN12. John probably married
Elizabeth in 1824, because John Sims and Robert Corley signed a marriage bond
on August 4, 1824 in Wilson County, Tennessee, which stated that John Sims
obtained a license to marry Elizabeth Caplinger WI39.
John
Sims’ Williamson County household in 1850 included individuals who may have
been sister-in-laws or other relatives: another woman
named Elizabeth Sims was born about 1803 or 1805 in Tennessee, and May or Mary,
who was born in 1795 or 1797 in Virginia UN10.
These two women were not included in his Williamson County household in 1860. A
man named Jefferson Sims, who was born about 1828 in Tennessee, was listed on
the second 1850 enumeration of the John Sims family, but not on the first. He
may have been the J.J. Sims who married Elizabeth Glen on January 1, 1851 WI34. Cyrus Sims was born in 1832, 1833, or 1834 in Tennessee UN10, UN11, and he may have been the Cyrus Sims
who married Sarah L. Holderfield on March 10 or March
26, 1852 WI34. Martha A. Sims was born about 1834 in Tennessee UN10. Elizabeth J. was born about 1837 in Tennessee, and her name
may have been Elizabeth Jane, because the second 1850 enumeration of the John
Sims household recorded a fourteen-year-old girl named Jane,
but did not record a thirteen-year-old Elizabeth UN10. She was probably the Elizabeth Jane Sims who married Solomon
F. Motsinger on December 4, 1853 in Williamson
County, Illinois IL5. She may have been
the Elizabeth Sims who was the head of the household in the 1860 US Census; she
appeared to be a widowed mother of three who was born in Illinois about 1832
who lived near the households of John Sims and Cyrus Sims in Williamson County UN11. Mary F. Sims was born about 1838 in Illinois UN10. Francis M. Sims was born about 1840 in Illinois UN10; he may have the individual named Frank (born about 1843 in
Tennessee) who lived with John Sims in 1860 UN11. Soloman was born about 1842 or 1845 in Illinois UN10, UN11. There are two Williamson County
marriages which may pertain to this Soloman Sims: on
October 29, 1871, Soloman Sims married Nancy J. Rich,
and on November 16, 1873, Soloman Sims married Dorthula Mooningham IL5. Solomon Sims died of dropsy (edema) at age thirty-five on
December 10, 1882 in the poor house in Williamson County, Illinois WI33. Nancy, born about 1845 or 1847 in Illinois UN10, UN11, was not included in the second
enumeration of the John Sims household in 1850, but she was listed in the first
UN10. When she was enumerated with John Sims in 1860, she was
thirteen UN11. Safronia or Safrona
was born about 1848 or 1850 in Illinois UN10, UN11.
The
1870 US Census recorded three individuals with John and Elizabeth Sims who had
not previously been recorded with them, who were all born in Illinois: William
was born about 1852, Marion was born about 1856, and Matthew was born about
1865 UN12. The fourteen-year-old boy named Marion was probably Francis
Marion Sims, the son of Christopher and Sabrina Sims, and later the father of
Cordelia Frances Sims. John may have been the father of Horace or Horis Simms, who lived very near
John in Williamson County during the 1850 and 1860 censuses UN10, UN11. Horace was born about 1828 or 1830 in
Tennessee UN10, UN11, and he married Harriett Gower on March
24, 1848 in Williamson County IL5.
The
Williamson County household of Christopher Sims in 1850 included Sobriny, Phebe A., Elizabeth, John J., Sarah A.E., Louiza J., Martha B., Charles C., Jeremiah, William, Louisa
B., Nancy J., and John J. Sims UN10. In
1860, those who lived with Christopher and Sabrina Sims in Williamson County
were Matthew, Cyrus, Louisa, Christopher, F.M., Sameneth,
Thomas B. Whitlock, and Nancy J. Whitlock UN11.
Phebe A. Sims was
born about 1828 in Tennessee UN10. Phebee or Pheba A. Simes married John W.
Hanks on March 26, 1857 in Williamson County, Illinois WI34. She was probably the Phebe A. Hanks, born about 1829 in
Tennessee, who was enumerated with John W. Hanks in Township 10, Range 3,
Williamson County, Illinois in 1860 UN11. She
may have been Phebee or Pheba
Hanks, who was enumerated with William Hanks in Township 9, Range 3, Williamson
County in 1870; in this census record, Phebee Hanks
was still thirty years old, and born about 1840 in Illinois UN12. This particular Phebee
or Pheba Hanks was listed on the same census page as
Sabrina Sims UN12.
Elizabeth Sims was
born about 1830 in Tennessee UN10. Her
name may have been Lucinda Elizabeth Sims, based on a marriage record of a
Lucinda E. Sims to William Gower, and a census record which showed that William
Gower was married to Elizabeth. Lucinda E. Sims married William W. Gower on
December 12, 1850 in Williamson County, Illinois IL1, and in 1860, William and Elizabeth Gower were enumerated in
Township 9, Range 4E, Williamson County UN11.
Elizabeth Gower was born about 1833 in Tennessee UN11. John J. Sims was
born in Illinois about 1835 UN10. John
Sims was appointed as the guardian for six-year-old Elizabeth Motsinger, the heir of Mathew Motsinger,
on October 18, 1864 at the Williamson County Courthouse MO17. Sarah A.E. Sims was
born about 1836 in Illinois UN10. Louiza J. Sims was born about 1837 in
Illinois UN10.
Martha
B. and Charles C. Sims appeared to be twins, as their names were bracketed
together in the census record and they were both eleven in 1850 (born about
1839 in Illinois) UN10,
but in 1860, these names were absent. Instead, Matthew and Cyrus were twenty,
born about 1840 in Illinois UN11.
The gender of Martha B. Sims was said to have been female in 1850, and the
gender of Matthew Sims was said to have been male in 1860. Matthew Willard Sims was born on March 30, 1840 in Illinois to C.
C. Sims and Girtie Motsinger
and died of pneumonia caused by influenza at age seventy-two on February 23,
1913 in Township R4 in Williamson County, Illinois WI33. A gravestone for M.D. Sims, which stated that he was born on
March 30, 1848 and died on February 23, 1913, is located in
Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Crab Orchard, Williamson County, Illinois; the
gravestone was also inscribed with the birth and death information for his
wife, “Elizebeth”, who was born on December 4, 1840
and died on August 15, 1919. A photo of this gravestone can be located on the Find a Grave website.
Cyrus C. Sims
joined Company H of the 81st
Illinois Infantry as a private on August 12, 1862 in Williamson County,
Illinois IL8. Cyrus C. Simes was captured on June
10, 1864 at Guntown, Mississippi and held at Andersonville Prison, but was
released and mustered out on June 17, 1865 PR15, IL8.
Cyrus Sims, age thirty and born in Illinois, resided in Township 9, Range 3,
Williamson County in 1870, with his wife, Mary, but Mary may have died by 1878,
because C.C. Simms married Rebecca Ferrell on January 17, 1878 in Saline
County, Illinois SA16. Cyrus C. Simes, also called C.C. Simms, died on January 7, 1897 and was buried in Carrier Mills, Saline County, Illinois
US20.
Another
set of bracketed names belonged to Jeremiah
and William, who were born about
1841 in Illinois UN10. Louisa B. Sims was born about 1842 in
Illinois UN10, UN11, and Nancy J. Sims was born about 1847 in Illinois UN10. The remainder of the children who were listed on the 1860
census with Christopher and Sabrina in 1860 (Christopher, F.M., and Sameneth) will be discussed in the biographical sketch for
Sabrina.
·
1850 US Census: lived in Williamson County, Illinois.
·
1860 US Census: lived in Township 9, Range 3E, Williamson County, Illinois.
Sabrina Peale was born in June 1816 in Tennessee UN14, circa 1817 in Kentucky UN10, about 1820 in Kentucky UN11, UN13, or about 1821 in Kentucky UN12. In 1900, she said that her father was
born in Virginia and her mother was born in Tennessee, and that she was unable
to read or write, but in the 1880 census she stated that both of her parents
were born in Kentucky. The
death certificate for Francis Marrion Sims stated that
“Sarbrina Peale” was born in Kentucky.
The 1860 census listed the members of the Sims family, and
Sabrina was probably the mother of Christopher, F.M., and Sameneth UN11. Additionally, a
laborer named Tho(mas) B. Whitlock (born
about 1842 in Illinois) and a sixteen-year-old domestic servant
named Nancy J. Whitlock, who was born about 1844 in
Illinois, resided in the Sims household at that
time US4.
Christopher
was born about 1853 in Illinois UN11 and
was probably the Christopher F. Simms
who married Martha Teal on July 18, 1869 in Williamson County, Illinois WI34,
HO22.
They resided in Anna, Union County, Illinois in 1880 UN13. F.M. Sims was Francis Marion Sims, whose Independence County, Arkansas death
certificate stated was born on July 24, 1856 in Illinois to Christopher C. Sims
and “Sarbrina” Peale. Sameneth Sims was born about 1858 in Illinois UN11.
Sabrina was the head of the household in
1870 and resided with “Buntan” and “Benyan” (probably “Benjamin”) Sims, ages twenty-nine and
eleven, respectively UN12.
Francis Marion and Sameneth should have been
enumerated with Sabrina but were omitted. Sameneth
did not reside with the Williamson County families of John Sims (age seventy),
Cyrus Sims (age thirty), or Mathew Sims (age thirty), although a
fourteen-year-old boy named Marion (probably Francis Marion Sims), who was born
in Illinois, did live in the household of John Sims.
In 1880, she was a widow who lived with
just one person, her twenty-one-year-old son, Benjamin Sims. Their
neighbor was T.B. Whitlock, born about 1844, who formerly worked for
Christopher, and with him was listed his brother, J.M. Whitlock, who was born
about 1838 in Illinois UN13. He
may have been “Jerry M. Whitlock” of Elco, who
married Mrs. Nancy J. Williams on February 6, 1886 in
Alexander County, Illinois AL7. Nancy
J. Williams may have been Jane Curtis, the daughter of Daniel and Mary Curtis
(see below). Further, J.M. Whitlock may have been Jeremiah Whitlock, who died
at sixty-four years and ten months on October 20, 1903 from a pulmonary
hemorrhage in Elco Township, Alexander County,
Illinois, and was buried the next day in Whitlock Cemetery AL6. These men (T.B. and J.M. Whitlock) stated
their parents were born in Kentucky. Sabrina’s surname when she married
Christopher Sims was “Whitlock”, so these two men were likely related to her,
and they may have been sons from a previous marriage (Francis Marion Sims’
death certificate stated that his mother’s maiden name
was “Peale” - not “Whitlock”). She
lived in the household of her son, F.M. Sims, in 1900, and at this time she was
eighty-four years old.
According
to the 1868 Williamson County, Illinois tax register, Sabrina Sims owned one
horse which had a value of $40, two neat cattle with a value of $22, eleven
sheep with a value of $11, seven hogs with a value of $7, for a total value of
domesticated animals of $80 DA19.
She did not own a carriage or a wagon, but she owned one clock which was worth $15
DA19. She did not own any money, stocks, or bonds, but she owned
other non-listed property, which was worth $20 DA19. She had five acres of wheat, fifteen acres of corn, and five
acres of land which was used for other purposes DA19.
On
behalf of the minor heirs of the deceased William Teal, who were Mary, Francis,
Sarah Ann, and Eliza [sic] Douglas
Teal, Sabrina Simms filed a petition to the Judge of the Williamson County
Court on October 18, 1869, requesting that John M. Young be appointed their
guardian MO17. This request was granted MO17.
The petition stated that the Teal children had no father or legal guardian who
was in the State of Illinois, which may indicate that Elias Teal, who was
formerly their guardian, had either left the state or had died MO17.
