Burgess Waggoner (Herbert, Nancy) was born
on February 25, 1798 in Culpeper County, Virginia and married Nancy Shipp on
May 1, 1819 in Green County, Kentucky SH6, DO3, TR6, GR7, BE9, NA4. The marriage bond between “Burgis” and
Nancy was recorded on April 29, 1819 GR7. The bondsman was Samuel Harding BE9. Census records indicated that he was born sometime in or between
the years 1797 and 1799 in Virginia UN10, UN11, UN12, UN13. When
enumerated in 1880, he stated that both of his parents were born in Virginia. According
to a record written in a Bible owned by Alexander Waggener, which was then
copied by his great-granddaughter, Delphine Dumas Nicol, and was provided to
the Alexander Hamilton Chapter of the Daughters of the
American Revolution, Herbert Waggener and Elizabeth (Willis) Waggener were the
parents of Alexander Waggener and Burgess Waggener TR6. A different Bible which was owned by Marjorie Miller (who died
in May 1984) recorded the births, marriages, and deaths of Waggener family
members; this Bible record stated that Burgess Waggener was born on February
25, 1798 to Herbert Green Waggener and his wife, Nancy (Willis) Waggener NA4.
He may
have arrived in Jackson Township as early as 1822, when he was said to have
arrived from Kentucky with William Shipp BR2. Burgess
was a farmer, and purchased a little over ninety acres
of land in Shelby County, Indiana on January 6, 1824, as Burges Waggoner GE4. He may have been a resident in Johnson County, Indiana shortly
thereafter, because the Johnson County, Indiana
Civil Order Book A (page 86) recorded that on March 19, 1827, Burgess and
Simeon Waggoner were involved in a debt suit against
Isaac Harvey HO25. He
bought eighty acres of land in Shelby County, Indiana on September 2, 1834, as
Burgess Waggener GE4. These parcels of
extremely level terrain, which were kitty-corner from each other, lay between
the Sugar Creek and the Big Blue River BO16, but
probably did not have direct access to any sort of seasonal stream. According
to the Johnson County, Indiana Record
Book AA, page 48, Burgess Waggoner and William Frady were appointed administrators of the estate of
Charles Frady on September 7, 1835 HO25.
Burgess,
along with members of the Ragsdale, Sturgeon, Clark, and Lee families, were
organized into a new church called Mt. Zion Baptist Church, near Trafalgar in
Johnson County, Indiana, on June 8, 1844 BR2. At
the time of the 1870 census, two of his children, Austin S.
and Amanda C., along with a young boy, Samuel P. Waggoner, lived with Burgess.
In 1880, he was listed as a widower of eighty-two years who suffered from
dropsy and lived with his daughter, Amanda C.
McCausland, a divorcee UN13.
Burgess died October 20, 1880 SH6, TR6 in Bloomington, Monroe County,
Indiana and was buried in October 1880 in Rosehill Cemetery, Indiana SH6, but the sign at the gate of Rose Hill Cemetery in Bloomington
stated that it was established in 1892. According to his information provided
by a Find a Grave contributor, his
burial record at the Rose Hill Cemetery stated that he was born in Culpeper, Virginia, and was buried at Lot 364 in the
Spencer Addition. His will, witnessed by James D. Maxwell and John Waldron, was
written on May 17, 1879, and was proved in Monroe County on November 1, 1880 IN3:
I
Burgess Waggener being of sound mind and memory do make and publish this my
last Will and testament, as follows. to wit:
I will and
bequeath to my daughter Amanda McCausland all my personal property wherever
situate after the payment of my Just debts and funeral expenses.
I hereby revoke all former wills by me
made.
Witness my hand this 17th day of May A.D 1879.
