Ignatius N. Welty (Francis, Mary) was born on July 10, 1867
in Illinois, according to his death certificate and the pension record of his
father FE1; he was the sole child of Francis and
Mary Welty FE1 and was called “I.N. Welty” on the 1900,
1910, and 1930 census records. He married Cordelia Frances Sims on November 16,
1890 in Elco, Alexander County, Illinois IL3, IL1.
According to most census records, he was a farmer, but the 1900 census
indicated that he was a clergyman who could read and write, and it stated that
he was born in July 1867. Mary E. Kelly, his eighteen-year-old half-sister who
was listed as his sister, lived with the Welty family in 1900.
Ignatius and
Cordelia lived in Kennett, Dunklin County, Missouri in April 1935, but at the
time of the 1940 census, they resided at 1707 Park Avenue, St. Louis, Missouri UN18. They shared an address with their son
and his family, Ignatius Jr., Anna, Joseph, and Dolores, and with two
additional families, which indicates that they probably lived in an apartment;
their rent was $7.50, which was paid monthly UN18. He was seventy-two years old on the date
of the census, April 4, 1940, and he stated that he had completed eight years
of schooling, and that he did not work in the previous year because he was
unable to do so UN18.
His death
certificate stated that he was eighty-five years old at the time of his death
at 11pm on March 21, 1953 (which was his grandson Bruce’s third birthday), and
listed his father’s name as William, which is most likely an error. The death
date engraved on his tombstone, March 3, 1953, is also incorrect. He died from
“Hypertension Heart Disease” due to pernicious anemia. His last address was
1919 Hickory Street in St. Louis, Missouri, and he had lived in St. Louis since
about 1938, according to his death certificate. His funeral was located at
McLaughlin’s Funeral Home in St. Louis, and he was buried at Odd Fellows
Cemetery in Bismarck, Missouri. The obituary for Reverend Ignatius Welty stated that his death
occurred on March 21, 1953, and that he was the husband of “Cordellia” Welty,
the father of Hersel, Ignatius, Jess Homer, Basil Franklin, Mary L. Queen, and
Grace E. “Honea”, and the brother of Ed Kelly WE20.

Cordelia Frances Sims (Francis, Sarah) was born in Anna, Union
County, Illinois on June 27, 1875, according to her death certificate.
According to census records, she was born in June 1875 in Illinois UN14, or about 1877 UN16 in Illinois UN17, UN18, to parents whose place of birth was
Missouri UN17. Cordelia’s parents married in 1872 in
Texas County, Missouri, and in 1876, F.M. Sims, Sarah Sims, Mary Sims, and
“Cordalia” Sims resided in Township 29, Texas County, Missouri. This suggests
that F.M. and Sarah did not move to Illinois until after the birth of Cordelia,
although it is somewhat possible that the young family moved to Illinois, then
back to Missouri, and then again to Illinois. On November 14, 1890, her parents
wrote a short note to Mr. Sidney B. Miller, the County
Clerk, which provided written consent to allow her to marry Ignatius, because
she was only fifteen years old IL3, IL1. The
signers of this note were simply “Fm Sims” and “Sl Sims” IL3, IL1.
According to the
1910 census, Cordelia was the mother of nine children, five of whom were alive
in that census year, but she would eventually have ten children. She was the mother of Mary L., Basil
Franklin, Gracy Ethel, Ignatius Francis, Jess Homer, and Hersel L. Welty. Mary (Welty)
Queen was born on March 6, 1894 US26 in Illinois UN14. On February 20, 1914, Mary L. Welty of
Hornersville in Dunklin County, Missouri, who was older than eighteen years of
age, married Mr. A.S. Rodgers of Hornersville in Dunklin County; the marriage
record stated “I.N. Welty father of Mary L. Welty, was present and gave his
consent” MI17. Four years later, Mrs.
Mary L. Rodgers of Hornersville, Dunklin County married T.H. Queen of Paulding,
Dunklin County on February 6, 1918 in Kennett, Dunklin County, Missouri MI17. Mary L. (Welty) Queen died on February
15, 1977 QU2,
US26.
Basil Franklin was born on May 17 or 18, 1898 US14 in Elco, Illinois BA34. Gracy Ethel was born in March 1900 in Illinois UN14. On April 17, 1919, Grace Welty of Senath, Dunklin County, who
was older than eighteen, married Oscar Haire of Hornersville, Dunklin County,
Missouri, and her father gave consent: “I N. Welty, father of Grace Welty, was
present and gave his consent to the marriage, and also stated that J M. Haire
gave his consent to Oscare Haire marriage.” MI17. The December
1971 obituary for Basil F. Welty mentioned his siblings, Mary Queen, Nace
Welty, and Reverend Hersel Welty, but Gracy Ethel was not listed amongst these
siblings BA34.
Cordelia may have
been the mother of William O. Welty,
who at the age of two months, died on August 2, 1902 from spinal meningitis
with a complication of infantile pneumonia in Elco Township, Alexander County;
he was buried at Simes Cemetery AL6.
Ignatius Francis Welty was born on September 18, 1904 US26, SE12 and died on June 16, 1972 WE18. I.F. Welty and Anna May Young, both of
Cardwell, Dunklin County, Missouri were married by Reverend
J.A. Patterson on March 10, 1933 in Cardwell, Missouri MI17. The World War II draft registration
card for Ignatius Francis Welty stated that he was born on September 18, 1904
in Elco, Illinois, and the “name and address of person who will always know
your address” was Anna Mae Welty SE12.
Jess (Jesse) Welty was born on January 9,
1910 and died in July 1968 US26. J.H. Welty and Bernice Hanks, both of Cardwell, Dunklin County, Missouri were married by J.A. Patterson on May 9, 1926 in Cardwell,
Dunklin County MI17. The Texas County, Missouri death
certificate for Berneice Ida Welty stated that her husband’s name was Jess H.
Welty and that her date of death was January 17, 1963. The gravestone for Jess
Homer Welty and Berniece Ida Welty is located in
Trinity Cemetery, Bono, Craighead County, Arkansas, and stated that Jess was
born on January 8, 1910 and died on July 28, 1968 (a photo of the gravestone
can be found on the Find a Grave
website). Reverend Hersel L. Welty
was born on December 11, 1918 US18, US26
and died on May 18, 1976 US18, WE19.
Hersel Welty and Estellene Holsapple were named as the parents of James Hersel
Welty on his St. Louis, Missouri death certificate, who died at the age of
twenty-one days on December 26, 1939.
Cordelia
was sixty-four years of age at the time of the census in 1940, and she stated
that she had received four years of education. Parenthetically, her home
address in that year, 1707 Park Avenue, had previously been the residence of a
certain “L.F. Sims”, who perished at the age of thirty-seven in the tornado
which ravaged St. Louis on May 27, 1896 CU11. Louis
F. Sims, a baker who was originally from Illinois died from shock and injuries
from the cyclone MI32.
After the death of
Ignatius, Cordelia moved down the street from 1919 Hickory to 1020 Hickory, as
this was her address at the time of her death, according to her death
certificate. Her death certificate also indicated that at age eighty-one, she
died in the St. Louis City Hospital at 7:50am on February 28, 1957 from chronic
myocarditis due to generalized arteriosclerosis. Her body was removed to
McLaughlin’s Funeral Home and she was buried at Odd
Fellows Cemetery in Bismarck, Missouri.
