John
Sawyer (Samuel, Mary) was born in Newbury, Essex
County, Massachusetts on March 15, 1675/6 to Samuel Sawyer MA26, AP2. He and Samuel Poore, Sr. were elected as a
fence-viewers for the upper end of Newbury, on March 24, 1679/80 CU7. He was allegedly a blacksmith SI1 who married Mary Merrill on December 5,
1700 in Newbury, Essex County, Massachusetts MA26, VI6, and he was the father of Judith Sawyer CH2. John was assigned ten feet, six inches
of common land along the Merrimack on March 9, 1707/8 PR11. The name of John Sawyer was listed amongst
men who were meant to be impressed into service, dated November 29, 1709, but
it is unclear if he was actually impressed CU7.
After the death of Mary, he married Sarah (Wells) Sibley in 1711, with whom he was the father of Lydia, Eunis, and Loice VI28, AP2. The record of their marriage intent
stated “John Sawyer of Newbury informd me of his
intent of marriage wth Sarah Sybley
of Salem Novr 25. 1710” MA26.
He
may have been the John Sawyer who was one of thirty men, which included Josiah,
Joshua, and Samuel Sawyer, who were probably his brothers, who signed a
contract on January 28, 1711 to construct a church CU8. The contract stated
that they promised to “provide and furnish Workmen and materials to finish and compleat the Church now standing on Mr
Brown’s land, called the Queen’s Chappel, and we do
hereby desire John Bridger, Esqr, to take into his care
and management the entire finishing and compleating
the said Church fit for the preaching the Gospel therein…” CU8. John died on March
27, 1756 in Newbury, Essex County, Massachusetts MA26, AP2.
Mary Browne (Isaac, Rebecca) was born on May 5, 1673 HO20, PE12 in Newbury, Essex County, Massachusetts VI28, although her birth
record did not provide her given name MA26. Instead, under the
heading of “Anno 1673”, it stated, “ye daughter of Isaac Browne was born May
5th” MA26. Mary Brown married Peter Merrill by 1693 in Newbury, Essex
County, Massachusetts TO1, with whom she was the
mother of Mary and Peter Merrill. Mary Merrill, the daughter of Peter
and Mary, was born on January 13, 1692/3 in Newbury, Essex County,
Massachusetts MA26, VI28 or on January 19, 1692/3 HO20. Mary Merrill, the
daughter of Peter, died on December 7, 1712 at Newbury, Essex County,
Massachusetts VI6.
Peter Merrill, the son
of Peter and Mary, was born on March 10, 1695/6 in Newbury, Essex County,
Massachusetts MA26, VI28. Peter Merrill married Sarah Hasletine on September 25, 1717
in Newbury, Essex County, Massachusetts VI6. Peter and Sarah were the parents of two children whose
births were recorded in Newbury, Essex County, Massachusetts VI28. These
were Peter, born on September 16, 1718, and John, born on March 14, 1724 VI28. Peter
and Sarah Merrell were the parents of four children whose births were recorded
in Methuen, Essex County, Massachusetts MA26.
These were Mary, born on June 6, 1732, Sarah, born on March 13, 1734, Moses,
born on January 3, 1738, and Hannah, born on August 31, 1740 MA26.
Mary Merrill was called the widow of Peter Merill, late of
Newbury when she was granted the administration of his estate on April 14,
1697; Joshua Bayley and John Merrill of Newbury were sureties to the bond AM1. She
submitted the account of her administration to Jonathan Corwin, Judge of
Probate of Wills on September 28, 1699 AM1. Peter Merrill’s real estate was worth ₤45 and his
personal estate “Clear of debts and funerall Charges” was worth over ₤65,
one third of which Mary was permitted to claim AM1. His
estate was divided amongst his widow, Mary (who received ₤15 of the real
estate and over ₤21 of the personal estate), his “only son”, Peter (who
received ₤20 of the real estate and over ₤28 of the personal
estate), and his “only Daughter”, Mary
(who received ₤10 of the real estate and over ₤14 of the
personal estate) AM1.
With
John, she was the mother of
Judith and John Sawyer. Judeth Sawyer
(or Judith Sawyer), the daughter of John Sawyer, Sr.
and Mary, was born on October 16, 1701 in Newbury, Essex County, Massachusetts VI28, MA26, AP2. John Sayer, the son of John and
Mary, was born on April 5, 1704 and died at age nineteen years and twelve days
on April 17, 1723 in Newbury, Essex County, Massachusetts VI28, VI6.
Mary
died on February 21, 1707 MA26 or 1708 AP2. According to her
gravestone at Sawyer Hill Burying Ground in Newburyport, Essex County,
Massachusetts, she died at the age of thirty-five on February 21, 1707/8.
