Abraham
Osborn (William, Rebecca) was likely born on August 19, 1751; the records
of the New Garden Monthly Meeting in Guilford County, North Carolina state that
Abraham Ozburn, the son of William and Rebeckah Ozburn, was born on the
19th day of the 6th month, 1751 US11. He was called Abraham “Ozbun” of
Guilford County, North Carolina in his marriage record dated May 25, 1774; he
married Abigail Davies at the meeting house at Rocky River, Chatham County,
North Carolina, according to the records of the Cane Creek Meeting in Orange
County (now Alamance County), North Carolina US11. Hinshaw stated that their wedding occurred on “1774, 5, 5” (May
5, 1774) HI4 but the actual date was probably May
25, 1774 US11. The ceremony was witnessed by
Peter Stout, Jeremiah Piggott, Rachel Piggott, Ann Hobson, Levi Branson,
William Hobson, Sarah Hobson, William Vestal, William Marshill, Ann Hood (or
Hoot), Rachel Vestal, Joseph Davies, Thomas Cox, Sarah Cox, Hannah Moffitt,
Elizabeth Vestal, Daniel Vestal, David Vestal, John Piggott, Thomas Davies,
Thomas Vestal, Richard Ozbun, Thomas Ozbun, Hannah Piggott, Mary Vestal, Jemima
Vestal, John Davies, and Mary Davies US11. The transcription of their marriage record follows US11:
Whereas Abraham Ozbyn son of William Ozbun of the County of
Guilford in the province of North Carolina and Abigail Davies of the County of
Chatham & province afforesaid Daughter of Charles Davies having appeared
before several monthly meettings of the people Calld Quakers and Declared their
intention of marriage with Each other according to the good order used among
them and having Concent of parents and relations Concerned them… they the said
Abraham Ozbun & Abigail Davies apeared at a publick meetting of the said people
held at their meetting house at Rock[y] River in the County of Chatham for the
worship of God this twe…ty fifth [the beginning of this word, “twe” was written
on the far right edge of the page, and was continued on the next line as “ty”,
but the middle “n” was missing] Day of the fifth month 1774 and then there in
the said assembly the sd Abraham Ozbun taking the sd Abigail Davies by the hand
did in a solemn manner openly declare that he took her the said Abigail Davies
to be his wife promising with Divine assistance to be unto her a loving and
faithfull Husband till death should seperate them and then and there in the
same assembly the said Abigail Davies did in like manner openly Declare that
she took the said Abraha[m] to be unto him a loving and faithful wife till
Death shou[ld] seperate them or words to that Effect And more over they the
Said Abraham Ozbun and Abigail Davies She According to the Custom of marriage
asuming the name of her husband did then and there to those presents set them
[or possibly “their”] hand for a further Confirmation therof
Abraham died of “slow fever”, which also
took the lives of most of his siblings, on December 28, 1781 at the young age of thirty, leaving behind Abigail and four
children under the age of seven HI4, OS1. The records
of the Center Monthly Meeting in Guilford County, North Carolina state that
Abraham Ozbun, the son of William and Rebecca Ozbun, died on the 28th
day of the 12th month, 1781 and was buried on the 29th day of the 12th month at the Friends’ Burying Ground at
the Center Meetinghouse US11. This cemetery is located in Greensboro, North Carolina OS1.
Abigail Davies (Charles, Hannah),
the daughter of Charles and Hannah Davies and the wife of Abraham Ozbun, was born on the 14th day of the 5th
month, 1751, according to the records of the Center Monthly Meeting in Guilford
County, North Carolina US11. She
was granted a certificate to the Center Monthly Meeting on July 2, 1774 HI4. A record of the children and grandchildren of Charles Davis
which was written in the register of the Cane Creek Monthly Meeting stated “Abigail daughter of CD [Charles Davis, as referred to
earlier in the record] married Abraham Osborne their children are Wm Abraham Thamer Hannah Abigails second
husband was Owen Williams” US11.
The
records of the Center Monthly Meeting in Guilford County, North Carolina state
that William Ozbun, the son of Abigail and
Abraham Ozbun, was born on the 22nd day of the 3rd
month, 1775 US11
(March 22, 1775) HI4. William Osborn, the son of Abram Osborn of Guilford County,
married Anna Newby, the daughter of Samuel and Rachel Newby at Back Creek
Monthly Meeting in Randolph County, North Carolina, on November 8, 1797 US11. The records of the Fairfield Monthly Meeting in Hendricks
County, Indiana state that William Osborn, his wife, Anna, and their children,
William, Thamar, and Jemima, produced a certificate from the Arba Monthly Meeting dated the 20th day of the 2nd
month, 1833, which was accepted at the Fairfield Meeting on the 18th day of the 4th
month, 1833 US11. The Arba Monthly Meeting is located in
Randolph County, Indiana. The Fairfield Monthly Meeting in Hendricks County,
Indiana recorded the births of those three children who were born to William
and Anna Osborn US11. Their son, William,
was born in Kentucky on the 28th day
of the 2nd month, 1815, but their next two children were born in “Wain
County” (Wayne County), Indiana; Thamer was born on
the 3rd day of the 2nd
month, 1817, and Jemima was born on the 11th day
of the 1st month, 1819 US11.
The records of the
Center Monthly Meeting in Guilford County, North Carolina state that Tamar Ozbun, the daughter of Abigail and Abraham Ozbun, Tamar, born on the 23rd day of the 11th month, 1776 US11 (November 23, 1776) HI4. The records of the Center Monthly
Meeting in Guilford County, North Carolina state that Tamer Ozbun,
the daughter of Abraham and Abigail Ozbun of Guilford
County, married Jerimiah (or Jeremiah) Reynolds, the son of William and Rhoda
(Elliott) Reynolds, on the 2nd day
of the 4th month, 1807 HI4, US11. Tamer Reynolds died at age
seventy-eight years, eight months, and nine days on August 15, 1855 US21. Her gravestone is located at Newberry
Friends Cemetery in Orange County, Indiana (a photo may be viewed on the Find a Grave website).
The
records of the Center Monthly Meeting in Guilford County, North Carolina state
that Hannah Ozbun, the daughter of Abigail and
Abraham Ozbun, was born on the 26th day of the 12th
month, 1778 US11
(December 26, 1778) HI4. The records of the
Deep River Monthly Meeting in Guilford County, North Carolina state that a
certificate from the Center Monthly Meeting which was dated the 19th day of the 1st month, 1793 for Tamar and Hannah Osborn
was read and accepted at their meeting which was held on the 1st day of the 4th month, 1793 US11. The records of the Deep River Monthly
Meeting in Guilford County, North Carolina state that during a meeting held on
the 4th day
of the 12th
month, 1797, Tamar and Hannah Osborn requested a certificate to the Center
Monthly Meeting, and during the subsequent meeting held on the 1st day of the 1st month, 1798, a certificate for Tamar
and Hannah Osborn was produced, read, approved, and signed; during this same
meeting, another certificate for William Osborn was produced US11.
The
records of the Center Monthly Meeting in Guilford County, North Carolina state
that Abraham Ozbun, the son of Abigail and
Abraham Ozbun, was born on the 20th day of the 1st month, 1781 US11 (January 20, 1781) HI4.
After the death of
Abraham, she married Owen Williams US11, OS1, DA9. Owen, who had previously been married and had children, was
disowned on September 3, 1792 by the Deep River Monthly Meeting for getting
“married out of unity” HI4. This
may have been directly related to his marriage to
Abigail. Abigail’s daughters, Tamer and Hannah, were received at the Deep River
Monthly Meeting, located about thirteen miles southwest of Greensboro in
western Guilford County, on April 1, 1793 on a certificate from Center Monthly
Meeting, and her sons, William and Abraham “Ozbon”, were received at Deep River on May 6, 1793 HI4. William and Abraham later went to the
Back Creek Monthly Meeting in Randolph County, North Carolina, and Tamer and
Hannah returned to the Center Monthly Meeting on January 1, 1798 HI4.
Abigail may have
died about the year 1798 in Stokes County, North Carolina DA9. Her death probably occurred sometime
before November 6, 1799, when Owen Williams of Stokes County married Sarah
Willits HI4, and her death did occur sometime before
the December 1803 marriage of her son, Abraham, to Martha Hodson, as their
marriage certificate stated that Abraham Ozbun and
Abigail Ozbun were deceased OS1.
