Robert Padgett (John, Hannah) was born about 1783 in New York
UN10.
Robert married Susannah Shapley BE7 and
was a farmer UN10. There were two men
in Oxford, Chenango County, New York named Robert Padgett; one was the son of
John Padgett, and the other was the son of James Padgett. If one were to
examine just one or two records at a time, it could be challenging or
impossible to determine which Robert Padgett the document was intended for, and
for this reason I have gathered information from multiple sources to
demonstrate that the Robert Padgett who was the son of James Padgett was
associated with the Brooksbanks and Gibson families,
while the Robert Padgett who was the son of John Padgett was associated with
the Shapley family. For clarity, I will underline and italicize information
pertaining to Robert Padgett
who was the son of John and Hannah Padgett, and I will underline using non-italicized font the
pertinent information regarding the Robert
Padgett who was the son of James and Rebekah Padget.
James Padget (likely
the brother of John Padgett and the uncle of the Robert Padgett who married
Susannah Shapley) was born in England in 1746 and was an ensign in the 6th Regiment of the Albany County, New York
Militia NA5, NA6. He married Rebekah Floid,
who was born in 1752 and died in 1842 NA6. Hannah Barstow
stated that her uncle, James Padgett, married Rebekah Crout
BA31. The marriage records state that James
Padgett (or Padget) married Rebecka Floyd (or Rebecca
Floid) on September 7, 1778 in Schaghticoke,
Rensselaer County, New York US19.
James and Rebekah were the parents of
Sarah (Sally) Padget (born in 1780), who married
Ralph Simpson NA5,
NA6. James Padget of the town of Glen, Montgomery County, New York
wrote his will on July 14, 1825, which named his sons, James, Robert, and John, his daughters, Barbary,
Sarah, Anna, Jane, Rebecca, and Mary, and his granddaughter, Sally Clayton; the
will was proved in the Surrogate Court of Montgomery County on October 25, 1830
NE36. James Padget died
in Oxford, New York in 1830 NA5, NA6.
The first-named son in James Padget’s will, also named James Padgett, died
at age sixty-one on August 20, 1860 and was buried at Brooksbanks
Cemetery on Basswood Road in Oxford Township, Chenango County, New York GA5. Elizabeth Padgett, the wife of this James Padgett, died at age
forty-three on March 29, 1842 and was buried at Brooksbanks
Cemetery on Basswood Road in Oxford Township, Chenango County, New York GA5. The second-named son in James Padget’s
will, Robert Padgett, died at age eighty-five
on December 15, 1867 and was buried at Brooksbanks Cemetery on Basswood Road in Oxford
Township, Chenango County, New York GA5.
According to his gravestone (a photo can be found on the Find a Grave website) located in “Brooks Cemetery” in Oxford,
Chenango County, he was eighty-five years old at the time of his death on
December 15, 1867, which implies that he was born in 1782. James’s Padget’s first-named daughter, Barbary, was probably
Barbara Brooksbanks. Hannah Barstow stated that James and Rebekah’s daughter,
Barbara, married into the Brooksbank family BA31. Barbara Brooksbanks
was called a sister of John Padgett of Oxford and the wife of Robert Brooksbanks of Oxford in Robert Brooksbanks
will, dated September 4, 1850; this will also mentioned
Robert Gibson, Jr., who was an executor of the will NE36. James Padget’s
daughter, Rebecca, may have been the Rebecca Padgett who died at age
seventy-nine on July 5, 1868 and was buried at Brooksbanks
Cemetery on Basswood Road in Oxford Township, Chenango County, New York GA5.
In 1850, two men named “Robt Padgett” of a
similar age were enumerated in Oxford, Chenango County, New York UN10. “Robt”
and Susanna Padgett lived with Emily Brown, age thirty, and her two young children,
Edwin, age ten, and Matilda, age four UN10.
They lived next to a household comprised of two women, Maria Wilbur
(thirty-five) and Jane Davis (twenty-three), and their young children, Abigail
Wilbur (age one), twins Sarah and Maria Davis (age five), and Gunthan Davis (age one) UN10.
The next family was that of Charles and Mary E. Padgett UN10. Robert and Susanna also lived next to Richard (age
twenty-eight) and Maria Padgett (twenty-four) with their daughter, Susanna (age
two), and near them lived Maria Padgett (age thirty), who was born in New York
and was a household member of William and Olive West UN10.
The
second man named “Robt” Padgett who lived
in Oxford, Chenango County in 1850 was sixty-eight (born about 1782), and he
lived in the household of “Robt” Gibson (forty-three) and Sarah Gibson
(forty-seven) UN10. In that same
household were Miles Hartwell (age ten), Elizabeth Gleason (age nine), Lewis
Taylor (nineteen), and Mary Padgett (age fifty-seven) UN10. They lived next to Robert Gibson (age sixty-seven) and Nancy
Gibson (age fifty-five) UN10.
This second Robert Padgett was enumerated
in the 1855 New York Census at age seventy-two in Oxford, Chenango County, New
York in the household of Robert Gibson (forty-seven and born in England) and
Sarah Gibson (fifty-two), along with Polly Padgett (age sixty-two); Robert and
Polly were called the uncle and aunt of Robert Gibson NE29. The census enumerator recorded that Robert was born in “Trowey” and Polly was born in Troy NE29. A key point to note in this census record was that there was
no check-mark indicating that this Robert had ever
been married; there were columns to record if the individual was married or was
widowed, and these were left blank for Robert Padgett NE29; this Robert could not have
been the Robert Padgett who married Susannah Shapley. The next household
which was enumerated was Robert Brooksbanks
(seventy-six) and “Borbery” Brooksbanks
(seventy-three), and Rebecca Padgett (sixty-seven) and John Padgett
(sixty-four) lived in this house NE29.
They were called the sister and brother of Robert Brooksbanks (they were his brother- and sister-in-law) NE29. Borbery and Rebecca were born in “Ronsalers maner” (Rensselaerwyck Manor), but John was born in “Trowey” (Troy) NE29. Robert was again enumerated in the household
of Robert Gibson of England in Oxford, Chenango County, New York in 1865;
Robert Gibson lived with his mother-in-law, Barbary Brooksbanks
(age eighty-four) and four boarders, Robert Padgette
(eighty-two), Rebecca Padgette (seventy-seven), John
Padgett (seventy-four), and Polly Padgett (seventy-two), who were all born in “Renslaer” NE30.
Robert Padgett was
not enumerated in the 1855 New York State Census or the 1860 US Census; he
probably died sometime after the 1850 US Census. His wife, “Susanah
Padgette” was called a widow in 1865 when she lived
with their daughter and son-in-law, Maria and Stephen
Wilber, in Oxford, Chenango County, New York NE30. Her gravestone is located in the Shapley Cemetery (the former Bliss
Willoughby Farm), yet a gravestone for Robert Padgett has not been discovered
there. Additionally, there was no record in the Chenango County Probate records
which indicated whether Robert died intestate or if he had left a will; there
was no probate document, whatsoever.
Charles Padgett or his wife seemed to
believe that his father was born in England, for his death certificate stated
that Robert was born in England, as did the 1880 census for Charles Padgett,
but Hannah Barstow’s account of her mother’s family, the Padgetts
of Oxford, New York, stated that Robert’s parents, John and Hannah Padgett,
arrived in America before the Revolutionary War, and Robert was born in America
BA31.

Susannah Shapley (Utter, Sarah) was born circa 1784 UN10 or 1785 NE30 in Vermont
UN10, NE30. Emily Brown, age thirty, and her two young children resided with
Robert and Susanna Padgett in 1850, and they lived next door to a
household comprised of two women, Maria Wilbur (thirty-five) and Jane Davis
(twenty-three), and their young children UN10. The next family was that of Charles and
Mary E. Padgett UN10. “Susanah Padgette” lived
in the household of Stephen and Maria Wilber in Oxford, Chenango County, New
York in 1865 NE30.
Susanah was eighty years old in 1865 and was
born in Vermont NE30.
She was the mother of eleven children and had been married one time, but the
census enumerator noted that she was a widow NE30. This household was in close proximity to a Shapley family which was headed by
fifty-two-year-old Joseph Shapley, who lived with his wife, children, and two
brothers, “…mas W. Shapley” (Thomas, age fifty-eight), and David Shapley (age
fifty-one) NE30. These men were Susannah’s nephews, the sons Thomas Garner
Shapley, her older brother.
As
mentioned earlier, the 1865 New York Census stated that she was the mother of
eleven children NE30. If it can be
assumed that the children who were marked in the Padgett household were the
sons and daughters of Robert and Susannah, in the 1810, 1820, 1830, and 1840 US
Census records, then she was the mother of one son and one daughter who were
born between 1804 and 1810, three sons who were born between 1811 and 1815, one
son and two daughters who were born between 1815 and 1820, one son and one
daughter who were born between 1820 and 1825, and one daughter who was born
between 1825 and 1830.
She may
have been the mother of Rufus Padgett,
who was born about 1813 UN12, UN13 or
1814 UN10 in New York UN10, UN12. He
would have been one of the three sons which were born between 1811 and 1815. Rufus
lived with his wife, Harriet, and their children, Helen (born about 1840),
Charles (born about 1842), William (born about 1844), Caleb (born about 1847),
and Oliver (who was seven months old) in Oxford, Chenango County in 1850 UN10. Rufus and Harriet may have divorced by 1860, because in that
year, Harriet was enumerated in Smithville, Chenango County, New York as
Harriet Haight, who lived with Horace Haight. With Horace and Harriet Haight
lived Helen Padgett, age twenty, along with Charles (eighteen), William
(fifteen), Caleb M. (twelve), Oliver (ten), Legrange
(seven), Cora E. (four), and Delaine (seven months) UN11. Rufus was a farm laborer who lived in the household of Charles
Seymour in Tioga, Tioga County, Pennsylvania in 1870, which was next door to
the family of Charles and Ida Padgett; this Charles was probably the son of
Rufus, as he was born about 1842 in New York UN12. He was not enumerated with Harriet in 1870 or 1880. He lived
with his son, William Padgett, in Tioga, Tioga County, Pennsylvania in 1880 UN13. The Tioga County, Pennsylvania death certificate for his son,
William F. Padgett, stated that he was born in 1844 to Rufus R. Padgett of New
York and Harriett Baxter of New York PE23.
The Mason County, Michigan death certificate for his son, Adolphus DeGrove Padgett, stated that he was born in “Shenango”
County, New York in 1851 to Rufus Padgett of New York and Harriet Picksley of New York, and died on July 23, 1938.
Maria (Padgett) Wilbur was
born about 1815 UN10, 1816 NE30, UN11, or 1818 UN13 in Chenango County NE30,
New York UN10, UN11, UN13. She would have been one of
the daughters who were born between 1815 and 1820. Maria Padgett, age
twenty-nine of Oxford, married Stephen R. Wilbour,
age nineteen, on July 12, 1847 in Oxford, Chenango County, New York SM5. She was enumerated without her husband in Oxford, Chenango
County in 1850; instead, she lived with her daughter, Abigail, who was born
about 1849, along with Jane Davis and Jane’s children UN10. Maria Wilbur lived with Robert
Padgett, John Padgett, Nancy Sherwood, and Sarah Ann Shapley in Oxford,
Chenango County in 1860 UN11. She was not listed with her children or her husband. “Susanah Padgette” was called the
mother-in-law of Stephen R. Wilber when she was enumerated in his household in
1865 NE30. Stephen’s wife was Maria Wilber (age forty-nine); the
census-taker noted that she was the mother of one child (this was
sixteen-year-old Abigail Wilber) NE30.
Stephen and Maria lived in Oxford in 1880 with their daughters, Catharine and
Minnie, and Stephen’s mother, Abagail UN13.
She may have been the “Mariah Wilber” who died on January 2, 1887 in North
Norwich NE27; her gravestone at North Norwich Cemetery in North Norwich,
Chenango County, New York states that she died at age seventy years and nine
months on January 2, 1887 (a photo may be viewed on the Find a Grave website).
Emily (Padgett) Brown was
born about 1817 UN13, 1818 UN12, NE31, 1819 UN11, or 1820 UN10 in
New York UN10, UN11, UN12, UN13. Emily would have been the
other Padgett daughter who was born between 1815 and 1820. Emily Brown, age
thirty, and her two young children, Edwin (age ten) and Matilda (age four),
resided with Robert and Susanna Padgett in Oxford in 1850 UN10. She was enumerated with her husband, William Brown, and her
children, James E. (age twenty), Matilda (age sixteen), and Mary (age two), in
Oxford, Chenango County, New York in 1860 UN11. In
1870, William and Emily lived with Lewis and Matilda Rogers (Matilda was
twenty-four, and was probably her daughter) in Afton, Chenango County, along
with Mary F. Brown and George W. Rogers, who were both twelve years old UN12. By 1875, they had moved in with the family of their son, James
E. Brown, and his wife, Hannah, in Coventry, Chenango County, New York NE31. William and Emily had relocated back to their hometown of
Oxford by 1880 UN13.
Susannah
may have been the mother of Richard
Padgett; Robert and Susanna lived next door to Richard and Maria Padgett in
Oxford, Chenango County in 1850 UN10. He
would have been the son who was born between 1820 and 1825. Richard was born in
February 1822 UN14 or about 1821 UN12, 1822 UN10, UN11, UN13, NE29, NE31, or
1823 NE30 in Chenango County NE29, NE30,
New York UN10, UN12, UN13, UN14 to a father who was born in
New York and a mother who was born in Vermont UN13, UN14. Richard Padgett, age twenty-three of
Oxford, married Priscilla M. Wilbour, age seventeen,
on May 27, 1847 in Oxford, Chenango County, New York SM5. His wife’s name was probably Priscilla Maria, for it was
written on the census records as Maria UN10, UN13, UN14,
Moriah UN12, Mariah NE31, Percila NE29,
Pricilla UN11, and Precilla NE30 (variants of “Maria” in 1850, 1870, 1875, 1880, and 1900, and
variants of “Priscilla” in 1855, 1860, and 1865). Richard and P. Maria Padgett
were the parents of Susannah Padgett, born in Oxford on June 15, 1848 SM5. Richard and Maria lived in Oxford, Chenango County, New York
in 1850 UN10, 1855 NE29,
1860 UN11, and 1865 NE30.
They moved to Norwich, Chenango County by 1870 UN12, and then to Butternuts, Otsego County, New York by 1875 NE31. They lived in Morris, Otsego County, New York in 1880 and 1900
UN13, UN14. Richard Padgett died on December 26,
1910 in Morris, Otsego County, New York NE27.
His gravestone, located in Riverside Cemetery in South New Berlin in Chenango
County, New York, is shared with his wife, Maria, and their daughter, Susie
Warner; their birth and death years are engraved on the stone and state that
Richard was born in 1822 and died in 1910, Maria was born in 1830 and died in
1908, and Susie Warner was born in 1848 and died in 1910. A photo may be found
on the Find a Grave website.
Susanah Padgett,
the daughter of Robert and Susannah Padgett, died on June 15, 1831 and was
buried on an “old abandoned plot on Bliss Willoughby” GA5. The Bliss Willoughby Farm refers to a farm owned by Bliss
Willoughby (born in 1767) “on the road from Oxford to Guilford” GA2.
Susanna
died on July 4, 1867 in Oxford, New York and was buried at the Shapley Burial
Ground BE5. Shapley Cemetery is located in an area
south of Oxford, New York, south of County Road 35, north of Gospel Hill Road, and
east of Dutcher Road. Her gravestone stated that she was eighty-one years,
eight months, and fourteen days old at the time of her death on July 4, 1867,
which, if this information was correct, would indicate
that her birth occurred on October 21, 1785. Another source stated
that Susannah Padgett, the wife of Robert Padgett, died at age eighty-one on
July 4, 1867 and was buried on an “old abandoned plot
on Bliss Willoughby”, which was called the Hovey Farm at the time of the survey
of that cemetery in 1930 GA5.
This cemetery may be located near Hovey Road.
