Samuel Edwards was probably the son of John and Sarah; a birth record from Wenham, Essex
County, Massachusetts states that “Samuell the Son of John Edwards By Sarah his
wife was Borne on the 18th of august 1715” MA26. This coincides with his age at the time of his death
(sixty-eight in 1783) according to his gravestone, which indicates he was born
about 1715.
John and Sarah Edwards were the parents of six children whose
births were recorded in Wenham, Essex County, Massachusetts over the years 1694
through 1715 VI41, however, because two of these records refer to John
Edwards, Sr. and Sarah, one record refers to John Edwards, Jr. and Sarah, and
the remaining records refer to John Edwards and Sarah, it is unclear if there
were multiple couples with the same names. Thomas was born to John and Sarah on
September 12, 1694, Deborah was born to John Sr. and Sarah on July 22, 1696,
Samuell was born to John Sr. and Sarah on April 16, 1706, Mary was born to John
Jr. and Sarah on September 30, 1710, Jerusha was born to John and Sarah on
August 10, 1712, and Samuell was born to John and Sarah on August 18, 1715 VI41.
Because he was forty-three when he married Huldah Estabrook MA26, he may
have been previously married. There is a marriage record for Samuel Edwards,
but it refers to a Samuel Edwards of Littleton and Ruth Lee of Concord, who
were married by Reverend Daniel Bliss on May 9, 1743 in Concord, Middlesex
County, Massachusetts MA26. It is unclear if this was the same Samuel Edwards who later
married Huldah Estabrook, but in the marriage record to Huldah, Samuel was
called “of Acton”, which is about six miles southeast of Littleton. Samuel and
Ruth Edwards were the parents of two children whose births were recorded in
Concord, Middlesex County, Massachusetts; these were John, who was born on May
18, 1744 and died in June 1744, and Ruth, who was born on February 13, 1748 MA26. Ruth
Edwards, the wife of Samuel Edwards, died on May 7, 1756 in Concord, Middlesex
County, Massachusetts MA26.
The marriage intention for Samuel Edwards of Acton and Huldah
Estabrook of Concord was filed in Acton, Middlesex County, Massachusetts on
January 20, 1759 MA26. Samuel Edwards of Acton, Middlesex County, Massachusetts married
Huldah Easterbrook of Concord on February 14, 1759 in Concord, Middlesex
County, Massachusetts by Reverend Bliss MA26. Samuel Edwards died on January 10, 1783 in Ashby,
Middlesex County, Massachusetts MA26. The gravestone for Samuel Edwards,
located at Ashby First Parish Burial Ground in Ashby, Middlesex County, Massachusetts,
states that he died at age sixty-eight on January 10, 1783; a photo of the
gravestone can be found on the Find a Grave website.
Huldah Estabrook
(Abraham, Martha) was born to Abraham Estabrook and Martha on April 1,
1726 in Concord, Middlesex County, Massachusetts MA26. This aligns with her calculated birth year of 1726, according
to her age at the time of her death (eighty-seven in 1813) as inscribed on her
gravestone in Ashby, Middlesex County, Massachusetts. On June 30, 1755, Huldah Estabrooks and her
sister, Martha Estabrooks, wrote to the Judge of
Probate regarding her deceased father’s estate AM1:

Huldah
Easterbrook was the mother of Huldah Edwards and Calven
Edwards MA26, and was likely the mother of Abraham Edwards, who was called
the brother of Calvin in the Calvin Edwards’ probate record MA64. Abraham and Calvin Edwards were clockmakers. Abraham Edwards of Ashby was called a “self-taught
clockmaker”; he was probably related to another clockmaker named Samuel Edwards
who originated from Ashby and later settled in Gorham, Massachusetts about 1808
NU3. Huldah Edwards was
born to Samuel and Huldah Edwards on December 11, 1759 in Concord, Middlesex
County, Massachusetts MA26.
Abraham Edwards was born
in 1761 in Concord and died at age seventy-nine in Ashby on July 1, 1840,
according to his gravestone, which is located at Ashby First Parish Burial
Ground in Ashby, Middlesex County, Massachusetts; a photo of his gravestone can
be located on the Find a Grave website. He married an individual named
Rebecca; Rebecca Edwards, the wife of Abraham Edwards, died in July 1813
in Ashby, Middlesex County, Massachusetts MA26.
Abraham then married an individual named Lydia. Samuel O. Edwards, the son of
Abraham and Lydia Edwards, died on September 5, 1825 in Ashby, and less than
one month later, John Edwards, the son of Abraham and Rebecca Edwards, died on
October 1, 1825 in Ashby MA26. He
may have been the Abraham Edwards who was called the father of Andrews Edwards
in the marriage record for Andrews Edwards (a dentist who was age fifty-four of
Concord) and Eliza A. Heard on June 15, 1851 in Wayland, Middlesex County,
Massachusetts MA63; this indicates that
Andrews Edwards was born about 1797. The Ashby
death register states that Abraham Edwards died on July 1, 1840 MA26. Abraham
Edwards of Ashby, Middlesex County, Massachusetts died intestate and Daniel
Shattuck of Concord, Middlesex County wrote a memorial (a petition) to the
Judge of the Court of Probate which stated MA64:
that
said Edwards left a widow who is now insane and is confined in the Hospital at
Worcester, and that the wife of your memorialist is the oldest child of said
deceased now living in this commonwealth, and that said deceased left one son
who wishes not to administer on said estate, but wishes your memorialist
appointed administrator…
The administration of
Abraham Edwards’ estate was granted to Daniel Shattuck on August 11, 1840;
Andrews Edwards (a machinist of Concord) and Nathan Brooks were sureties for
the bond of administration MA64.
Abraham’s widow was Lydia Edwards of Ashby MA64. Lydia
Edwards, called the second wife of Abraham Edwards, died on September 8, 1842
in Ashby, Middlesex County, Massachusetts MA26.
Calven Edwards was
born on May 21, 1763 in Concord, Middlesex County, Massachusetts MA26. Calvin Edwards of Concord and Mary H. Milton were called the
parents of Mary Edwards, who was born in Ashby and died as a single person at
age seventy-six years and one month of lung fever on January 9, 1869 in Natick,
Middlesex County, Massachusetts MA26;
this indicates she was born about December 1792. Calvin Edward died on March
16, 1796 in Ashby, Middlesex County, Massachusetts MA26. The gravestone for Calvin Edwards, located at Ashby First
Parish Burial Ground in Ashby, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, states that he
died at age thirty-two years and ten months on March 16, 1796; a photo of the
gravestone can be found on the Find a Grave website. The administration of the estate of Calvin Edwards of
Ashby was granted to his widow, Polly Edwards, on May 10, 1796; Abraham
Edwards, yeoman and John Abbot, gentleman, were sureties MA64. The
inventory of his estate, conducted on June 2, 1796 by Isaac Gregory, Jacob
Damon, and Benjamin Colman, stated the “Inventory of all the Estate whereof
Calvin Edwards yeoman late of Ashby died Seized as Shewn to us the Subscribers,
by Abraham Edwards, and owned, by the two Brothers Abram Edwards,
and Calvin Edwards Decst in Equel Shares” MA64. The committee who conducted the inventory of Calvin’s
estate were obliged to separate and divide the real estate held jointly by
Calvin and Abraham MA64. The inventory included, amongst several other items MA64:

The form
from the office of probate which ordered the division of his estate amongst his
widow and his children, dated April 18, 1797 contained two pre-written
paragraphs with instructions regarding the distribution of assets to the
decedent’s children, but those two paragraphs had been crossed out, which
passively indicated that there were no surviving children MA64. However,
Calvin and Polly did have children, as demonstrated by the guardianship bond
issued to Abraham Edwards on April 18, 1797 for Samuel, Elijah, Calvin, Polly,
Betsey, and Patty Edwards, who were “Minors under fourteen years of age &
Children of Calvin Edwards” MA64. Polly referred to four of these children in her account of
expenses, naming Calvin, Polly, Betsy, and an infant child MA64, who was
likely Patty.
Hulda Edwards was enumerated in 1790 as the
head of the household in Ashby; she lived with two additional women UN4; in 1810, just after the household of Abraham Edwards, Huldah
Edwards was again enumerated as the head of her household in Ashby, and she
lived with one girl UN6. The gravestone for Huldah, the wife of Samuel Edwards,
located at Ashby First Parish Burial Ground in Ashby, Middlesex County,
Massachusetts, states that she died at age eight-seven on October 26, 1813; a
photo of the gravestone can be found on the Find a Grave website.
