Richard Cox may have been the Richard Cox who was
christened on February 10, 1688 at St. Andrew Holborn Church in London,
England, to parents Richard and Judith Cox (“Richard son of Richard Cox and
Judith born in Welch buildings and bapt ye 10.th”) LO1. These possible parents, Richard and
Judith, were probably the same individuals recorded in the Christenings of St.
Andrew Holborn Church on January 16, 1686 (“Ann
ye daughter of
Richard Cox Smith & Judith his wife in Vine streete bapt ye 16.th”) LO1. There are
two streets with the appellation of “Vine Street” in London, and both are less
than two miles from St. Andrew Holborn Church. Vine Street to the southeast of
the church is just north of the Tower of London, and Vine Street to the
southwest of St. Andrew Holborn Church is north of Piccadilly, just a stone’s
throw from St. James’s Church, Piccadilly, Westminster. Perhaps the Richard and
Judith Cox who may have been the parents of Ann Cox and of Richard Cox (who
married Elizabeth Scarlett) were also the parents of four children who were baptized at
St. James’s Church, Piccadilly: John, born on October 2 and baptized on October
5, 1691, Thomas, born on May 11 and baptized on May 20, 1694, another John,
born on June 3 and baptized on June 17, 1695, and
William, baptized on May 16, 1697 EN4. It is unknown if the Richard Cox who was the
husband of Elizabeth Scarlett and the father of Rebecca Cox was also the son of
Richard and Judith Cox of London, as discussed above. Richard
Cox may also have been related to John Cox, who was called a Friend “lately
Come from Ould England” who produced a certificate to
the Center Monthly Meeting in Chester County, Pennsylvania on the 4th day of the 7th
month, 1708 which was accepted US11.
He
may have been the Richard Cox who married Margaret Potts. The records of the
Abington Monthly Meeting dated the 26th day
of the 3rd month, 1712 state that Richard Cox of the Kennett Monthly
Meeting in New Castle County married Margaret Potts, having twice already
declared their intent to marry US11.
The records of the Kennett Monthly Meeting in Chester County, Pennsylvania
state that “Richert” and Margret Cox were the parents
of Anna, Sarah, Richert, Jonathan, twins Joseph and
Benjamin, and John US11. Anna
Cox was born on the 29th day
of the 8th month, 1713, probably in Chester County, Pennsylvania US11. Sarah Cox was born on the 15th day of the 12th
month, 1715, probably in Chester County, Pennsylvania US11. Richert Cox was born on the 17th day of the 2nd
month, 1718, probably in Chester County, Pennsylvania US11. Jonathan Cox was born on the 11th day of the 6th
month, 1720, probably in Chester County, Pennsylvania US11. Joseph Cox was born on the 18th day of the 2nd
month, 1723, probably in Chester County, Pennsylvania US11. The monthly meeting held at Gwynedd in
Chester County, Pennsylvania on the 26th day
of the 1st
month, 1745 recorded that Joseph Cox and Catherine Watson declared their second
intent to marry and were then cleared to marry US11. The records of the Uwchlan Monthly Meeting in Chester County, Pennsylvania
state that Joseph and Catharine Cox were the parents of Hannah, born on the 2nd day of the 2nd
month, 1746 (and died on the 11th day
of the 5th month, 1747), Hannah, their second daughter, born on the 6th day of the 9th
month, 1747 (and died on the 1st day
of the 10th month, 1747), Mary, born on the 8th day of the 9th
month, 1748 (and died on the 4th day
of the 7th month, 1754), William, born on the 14th day of the 8th
month, 1750 (and died on the 23rd day
of the 8th month, 1750), Hannah, born on the 5th day of the 10th
month, 1751, Margaret, born on the 6th day
of the 1st month, 1753, Benjamin, born on the 7th day of the 2nd
month, 1756 (and died on the 2nd day
of the 5th month, 1757), Benjamin, born on the 8th day of the 7th
month, 1758, Richard, born on the 29th day
of the 1st month, 1761, and Elizabeth, born on the 25th day of the 3rd
month, 1763 US11. The records of the
Goshen Monthly Meeting in Chester County, Pennsylvania state that Joseph Cox
died at age ninety-three on the 17th day
of the 7th month, 1814 US11. Benjamin
Cox was born on the 18th day
of the 2nd month, 1723, probably in Chester County, Pennsylvania US11. The monthly meeting held at Gwynedd in Chester County,
Pennsylvania on the 26th day
of the 9th month, 1745 recorded that Benjamin Cox and Elizabeth Watson
declared their second intent to marry and were then cleared to marry US11. John Cox was born on the 9th day
of the 8th month, 1725, probably in Chester County, Pennsylvania US11.
Richard Cox lived in Wellington or Warrington Township,
York County, Pennsylvania OS1. The Concord Monthly Meeting minutes stated that Richard Cox was
“of New Garden” when he and Elizabeth Scarlett declared their intent to marry
on the 7th day of the 9th
month, 1726, but the marriage records of the Concord Monthly Meeting stated
that when Richard Cox married Elizabeth Scarlet on December 15, 1726, he was a
yeoman of London Grove in Chester County US11, PE2. The names of thirty-nine
witnesses were written below their marriage record, and included Humphrey
Scarlet, Ann Scarlett, William Cox, Thomas Cox, John Scarlet, and Rebeca
Scarlet, and most
of the record has been transcribed below US11:
Whereas Richard Cox

the County & Privince afore said an Spinster

The notes of the
Warrington Monthly Meeting in York County, Pennsylvania, indicated that on
September 15, 1759, they received a letter from the New Garden Meeting, which
had been dated June 30, 1759, which stated that the children of Richard Cox by
his first wife had a birthright among friends, and mentioned that one of
Richard’s children was named Nathaniel CO14.
It is unclear if this particular Richard Cox was the
same Richard who had married Elizabeth Scarlett, and who was also the father of
Rebecca Cox.
Elizabeth
Scarlett (Humphry, Anne) was the mother of Rebecca Cox OS1. Elizabeth “Scarlet” of Chichester was called a spinster daughter
of Humphrey and Ann Scarlet when she married Richard Cox on 15th day of the 10th month, 1726 PE2. She probably died sometime before September 16, 1745, the date
her father wrote his will, as Humphry called Richard Cox his son-in-law, but
did not mention Elizabeth PE7.
