No parents conclusively identified |
William Phipping called himself a baker in his will WI44. The baptism record for his daughter, Joan, and the burial record for his wife, Judith, indicated that he and his family resided in the village of Wedmore, because he was called Willmi Phippen de Burgo and Willmi de Burrow SO1, HA40. The specific locality was was used to differentiate between other families with the same surname in the parish of Wedmore, such as “de Sand”, “de Cocklake”, or “de Heathhouse”. He was the brother of Joseph Phipping and the father of “Judah” (Judith), Elizabeth, Francis, and Joane WI44. This brother, Joseph, may have been the Joseph Phippen who married Elynor Marten on August 2, 1603 in the parish of Wedmore, Somerset, England HE21. Their children were baptized in Wedmore, and they were Christoper, who was baptized on August 17, 1603, Isabella, who was baptized on December 5, 1604, Joseph, who was baptized on October 12, 1606, and George, who was baptized on March 16, 1610/11 and was buried on March 24, 1610/11 HE19, HE20.
Judith Phippen may have been the “Judith dr. of William Phippen” who was christened on September 25, 1617 in Burnett Parish, Somersetshire, England JE5.
Elizabeth Phippen married John Addams and was the executrix of her father’s will WI44. Her marriage record was not located in the parish register of Wedmore.
Francis Phippen may have been Francisca, daughter of William Phippen, who was baptized with two children on February 10, 1627/8 (“Baptizati fuerunt… Francisca filia Willmi Phippen…”) SO1. She was mentioned in her father’s will dated September 22, 1647 WI44.
Joan Phippen may have been Joanna, daughter of William Phippen de Burgo, who was baptized with another child on January 9, 1630/1 (“Baptizat[i] fuere… Joanna filia Willmi Phippen de Burgo…”) SO1. She was mentioned in her father’s will dated September 22, 1647 WI44.
The parish record for Wedmore, Somerset, England stated that Judith Phippen, the wife of William, was buried on December 10, 1637 (“1637 Septembris 1637… 5 Sepult fuit Judith Phippen Uxor Wmi de Bur…”) SO1. The ending of this phrase was likely “Willmi de Burrow” HA40. William Phipping of Wedmore, Somerset, England wrote his will on September 22, 1647 which stated that he was a baker and named his daughters, Joane, Francis, Elizabeth, and Judah (who was then in New England), his son-in-law, John Addams, and his brother, Joseph Phipping (who was then in Ireland) WI44:

The parish record for Wedmore, Somerset, England stated that William Phippen was buried on October 5, 1647 (“1647 Octobris 1647… 5 Sepultus fuit Willmus Phippen de Wedmore”) SO1. His will was proved on November 9, 1650 on the oath of Elizabeth, the wife of John Addams and the executrix (“Nono die mensis Novembris Anno Domini millessimo sexcentessimo quinquagessmio Juramento Elizebethæ uxoris Johannis Addams et Executricis”) WI44.
The will of another man named William Phippen dated May 16, 1624 and proved July 30, 1624 has been transcribed below to provide more context of the Phippen families who lived in Wedmore in the early 1600s EN3. He did not appear to be closely related to William Phippen (d. 1647), unless he was perhaps his uncle. His will stated that the residence of William Phippen (d. 1624) was in Sand, which is just south of the village of Wedmore, and that had a lease of land with an additional house in Lympsham, which is approximately eleven miles northwest of Wedmore EN3. His will named his sons, Edward, John the Elder, George, Thomas, William, James, and Peter; James and Peter were also his executors EN3. He bequeathed his house in Sand to his son, William, and he bequeathed the use and profits of his tenements in Sand to John the Elder, George, and Thomas EN3. He appointed overseers of his will, whom he called “my bretheren”, and these men were John Urch, George Phippen, Richard Urch, and John Tutton EN3. John Urch alias Fry, Thomas Urch alias Fry, John Tutton, and John Petheram were witnesses to his will EN3. His probate record stated that George Phippen was the natural and last brother of the deceased William Phippen EN3. The parish register for Wedmore had marriage records for John Urch alias Fry, Thomas Urch alias Fry, Richard Urch, John Tutton, and John Petheram, but no marriage record was found which linked any of these men with a woman with the Phippen surmame, so it is likely that William Phippen used the word “bretheren” in the sense that they were fellow church members. No marriage record in Wedmore was found for his brother, George Phippen. Below is the transcription for the will of William Phippen of Sand (d. 1624) EN3:

[On the thirtieth day of July in the year of our Lord one thousand six hundred and twenty-four, a Commission was issued to George Phippen, natural and last brother of the said deceased, to administer the goods, rights and trusts of the said deceased according to the terms of the said will during the minor estate of James Phippen and Peter Phippen, sons of the said deceased and executors etc. of the property &c. Before John Todd, vicar of Wedmore, who swears by the force of the Commission in that part elsewhere issued]
Inspired by the work of John Insley Coddington (“The Wheelers of Bedfordshire and New England” CO42), who extracted the baptism, marriage, and burial records of members of the Wheeler families from the parish registers of Cranfield, Bedfordshire, England (which were transcribed by F.G. Emmison), I decided to chronologically arrange the records of the Phippen families of Wedmore, and then I attempted to assemble these records into family groups. The first group is simply the raw data arranged chronologically, and the second group contains my deductions and guesswork regarding the family groups.
