William Claiton, Sr. was most likely the father of the William Claiton of Boxgrove and Chichester who married Jone Smith in 1631 in Boxgrove, Sussex, England CH36, and he may have been the “Wyllm the sone of Rychard Cleton” who was christened on February 24, 1589/90 in Walberton, Sussex, England CH38. The parish of Walberton is just five miles east of the parish of Boxgrove. A birth year of 1590 would mean that he may have married sometime between 1610 and 1620; if he did marry in that time frame, his children would have been born between 1610 and 1640. Therefore, he may have been the father of Jone Cloiton, William Cloiton, and Thomas Clayton.
Jone Cloiton married Edward Frost on July 26, 1631 in Boxford, Sussex, England CH36. She was probably the mother of Edward Frost, the son of Edward Frost, who was baptized on May 13, 1632 in Boxgrove, Sussex, England and was buried on July 15, 1633 CH36. Jone Frost, the wife of Edward Frost, died shortly after the birth of her son, and was buried on June 3, 1632 CH36. Edward Frost remarried to Jone Edwards on April 28, 1634 CH36.
William Cloiton married Jone Smith on October 30, 1631 in Boxford, Sussex, England CH36.
Thomas Clayton, the son of William Clayton, was christened on April 21, 1616 in Boxgrove, Sussex, England WE36, EN4.
Elizabeth Claiton, “the wife of Willia[m] Claiton th’ elder” was buried on October 16, 1638 in the parish of Boxgrove, Sussex, England CH36, WE36. “William Claiton sen” was buried on April 8, 1644 in the parish of Boxgrove, Sussex, England; his burial record was directly above that of Joane Claiton’s, who was called “the wife of William Claiton iun” WE36. The abbreviation “iun” meant “jun” or “junior”, indicating that the husband of Joane Claiton was William Claiton, Jr. and his father would have been William Claiton, Sr.
