This map of the village of Keene was copied from A History of the Town of Keene From 1732, when the Township was Granted by Massachusetts, to 1874, when it became a City GR4, by S.G. Griffin. Thomas Shapley, Junior’s house is block number fifteen, and it was located south of Packetsfield Road and on the east side of Main Street. This was probably the house in which Johannah Shapley lived as an elderly woman, before she remarried to Thomas Applin. The map was drawn as it had been in about 1800, and it was copied from the Annals of Keene. George Sturtevant compiled the data from surveys and interviews of elderly people who were able to remember what the town was like when it was newly formed. A few examples of buildings were the schoolhouse (6), the old printing office (18), and Ralson’s Tavern (23). There was a blacksmith (65), horse sheds (80), a meeting house (62), Draper’s Bake House (42), Cooper’s shops (32), Blake’s Tavern (7), and Bemis, the watch maker (24). Neighbors of Thomas Shapley were Widow Goodnow (16) and Eli Metcalf (14).
