Samuel Sawyer (William, Ruth) was born on November 22, 1646 in Newbury, Essex County, Massachusetts to William and Ruth Sawyer MA26, AP2, CU8. “Sammuell Sayer” stated that he was about eighteen years old in a deposition at the Ipswich Quarterly Court on March 28, 1665 DO14. He married Mary Emery on March 13, 1670/1 in Newbury, Essex County, Massachusetts MA26, AP2, EM1.

Samuel was made a freeman of Massachusetts on May 12, 1675 AP2, EM1, and at some point, he became a lieutenant AP2, HO11. Samuell Sawyer of Newbury took possession of a stray blackish dun horse which was found on his land, and in an Ipswich record dated September 19, 1676, this horse was appraised at at three pounds, six shillings by Israel Webster and Peeter Godfrey SA21. He may have been the “Sam. Sayer” of Newbury who was twenty-nine when he took the oath of allegiance in 1678 DO18, and the Samuell Sawyer who was twenty-nine when he was deposed on February 6, 1678 DO19, but this would indicate that he was born in 1649 or 1650.
