Levi Hale was born about the year 1800 in New York UN10, UN12, UN13 (he was enumerated as Levi “Hail” in the 1850 census), or about 1809 in New York UN11. In 1880, Levi stated that his parents were born in Vermont UN13. Levi probably married Polly sometime before 1830. He was the father of George W. Hale, according to George’s death record MI5. Levi and his family relocated to Lorain County, Ohio after October 1849, because his son, Albert, was born in New York in October 1849. He was listed as a farmer in all censuses which reported occupation, and in 1870, he was still the head of his household, with four of his sons assisting him on the farm or working as a laborer. Levi, Polly, and their son, Adolphus, resided with thirty-year-old Elbert (Albert) Hale in 1880, who was the head of the household.

·         1880 US Census: lived in Bangor, Van Buren County, Michigan.

Polly Coats (Stephen, Polly) was born on June 26, 1809 in Benson, Rutland County, Vermont to Stephen and Polly Coats VE7, VE12. Polly consistently reported to the census enumerators that she was born in Vermont, and she was forty years old in 1850 UN10, fifty years in 1860 UN11, sixty-two in 1870 UN12, and sixty-nine in 1880 UN13, so she was born about 1808, 1810, or 1811. The enumerator of the 1880 census recorded that she was born in New York, but her parents were born in Vermont UN13. Polly Hale lived in the same town (Henrietta, Lorain County, Ohio) as Stephen and Caroline Coats (her brother and sister-in-law) in the census years of 1850 and 1860 UN10, UN11.

Polly “Hail” or “Hales” was the mother of Richard, Sarah, Pollena, Lucinda, Stephen, George W., Adolphus, Albert, and John Wilbur Hale. Richard Hale was born in 1831 MI4, UN10, NE30, UN12 or 1833 UN13 in Jefferson County NE30, New York MI4, UN10, UN12, NE30. He was called a seaman and a sailor UN11, UN13, NE30. He lived with the family of Stephen and Polly Nutting in Henderson, Jefferson County, New York in 1850 UN10, whose daughter, Melissa, he later married. Richard and Melissa Hale lived in Henderson, Jefferson County with Windfield, William, and Louisa Hale, ages four, three, and one, respectively, in 1860 UN11. Five years later, Richard and Malicie were enumerated in Henderson, Jefferson County with Stephen Nutting, Richard’s father-in-law, and George Hale, their four-year-old son NE30. The three children who were present in Richard and Melissa’s household in 1860 were not listed on the 1865 New York State Census. Richard, Melissa, and George Hale had relocated to Deerfield Township, Van Buren County, Michigan by 1870 UN12, and they lived in Covert Township, Van Buren County in 1880 UN13. Richard Hale, the son of Levi and Polly Hale, died at age sixty on June 23, 1891 in Covert Township, Van Buren County, Michigan from heart disease VA10. This death record conflicts with a newspaper article regarding his death, which stated LO5:

On Tuesday evening of last week Richard Hale, of Covert township, was killed at the Toquin crossing of the T. & S. H. R. R. by being thrown from his carriage. He had started for a physician for one of his neighbors; his horse took fright and ran away, and at crossing the carriage was overturned, he thrown out and his neck broken. Deceased was about sixty years of age, a veteran of the late war and highly esteemed. He was the father of Geo. Hale…

His gravestone, located at Covert Cemetery in Covert Township, stated that he died on June 23, 1891 at age sixty years, nine months, and twenty days, which if correct, indicates that he was born on December 3, 1830. A photograph of his gravestone can be found on the Find a Grave website. Melissa Hale’s Van Buren County, Michigan death certificate stated that she was the daughter of Stephen and Polly Nutting, and she died on April 5, 1915 MI21.

Sarah Hale was born in New York in about 1832 UN10. A marriage application dated April 25, 1854 in Lorain County, Ohio recorded the intent of Horace Murray to marry Sarah Hale OH3. Sarah probably died before 1860, because Horace “Murry”, but not Sarah, was enumerated in the household of Levi and Polly “Hales” in Henrietta, Lorain County in that census year UN11. Pollena Hale was born about 1834, Lucinda Hale was born about 1838, and Stephen Hale was born about 1843, all in New York UN10. They were not enumerated with their parents in 1860. A license for a marriage application dated December 21, 1854 in Lorain County, Ohio recorded that John S. Rice intended to marry Lucy Ann Hale OH3, but it is unclear if this Lucy Ann Hale was the daughter of Levi and Polly. This John Rice may have been the John Rice who was enumerated with John Brown, who were both shoemakers, in Wellington, Lorain County, Ohio in 1860 UN11. A shared gravestone or memorial marker for Sarah E. Murray and Lucinda C. Hale, located in Thomas Cemetery, Bangor Township, Van Buren County, Michigan, appears to state that Sarah died on July 13, 1856 and Lucinda C. Hale died on August 1, 1863 at the age of twenty-four years, nine months, and twenty days; a photo of this gravestone can be found on the Find a Grave website. Stephen Hale may have been the Stephen V. Hale whose gravestone in Thomas Cemetery, Bangor Township, Van Buren County, Michigan indicates that he was killed on May 18, 1864 at the age of twenty-one years and eleven months; a photo of this gravestone can be located on the Find a Grave website. George W. Hale was born on October 4, 1843 in Henderson, Jefferson County, New York FE1, UN20, MI5.

Adolphus Hale was born in November 1845 UN14, or about 1845 UN10, UN11, UN16, 1846 UN12, or 1848 UN13, MI23 in Jefferson County MI23, New York UN10, UN11, UN12, UN13, UN14, UN16. He lived near Elbert and Levi Hale in Bangor Township, Van Buren County, Michigan in 1880 UN13. Adolphus Hale, age thirty-two, married Clarisa L. Stewart, age nineteen, on November 7, 1880 in Bangor, Van Buren County, Michigan MI23. He (as Adolphus UN14 and Adolph UN15) was called a widower on the 1900 and 1910 US Census records, when he was enumerated in Covert Township, Van Buren County, Michigan as the brother of “Wilber” UN14 or “William” UN15 Hale who lived with Wilber/William and Eva Hale UN14, UN15. In 1920 as Alfred Hale, he lived alone in Covert Township UN16. According to his Van Buren County, Michigan death certificate, Adolph Hale was born on November 8, 1845 to Levi Hale, and he died in Bangor Township on November 25, 1925 from a cerebral hemorrhage; his deceased wife’s name was Clara Hale. His obituary stated that he died at the residence of Steve Boynton in Bangor and was buried next to the graves of his wife and child at the Thomas Cemetery TU7.

Albert L. Hale was born about 1848 UN15, 1849 UN10, or 1850 UN11, UN12, UN13 in New York UN10, UN11, UN12, UN13. He was called Elbert Hale in 1880 when he lived in Bangor Township, Van Buren County, Michigan with his father and mother, Levi and Polly Hale UN13. He may have been the Albert Hale who was a boarder in the household of Mary Gallup in Burdell, Osceola County, Michigan in 1900; this Albert was born in October 1849 in New York to parents who were also born in New York, and he was unmarried UN14. In 1910, he was enumerated as a patient (“inmate”) at the Van Buren County Infirmary in Hartford Township, Van Buren County UN15. His Van Buren County, Michigan death certificate stated that he was born on October 23, 1847 in New York to Levi Hale and Polly Coats and died on April 23, 1917. His gravestone at Covert Cemetery in Covert Township stated that he was born on October 23, 1849 and died on April 23, 1917 (a photo of which can be viewed on the Find a Grave website). His death was caused by a “Broken neck & Fracture of Skull, accidental, Fall from roof onto cement walk”. A newspaper article stated IN24:

Crawling through the window of his room at the county infirmary three miles east of Hartford last Sunday night, Albert Hale, aged 69, a former well known resident of Covert, plunged to death on a cement sidewalk twenty feet below. His deady [sic] body was found by Keeper William Stackengast at five o’clock Monday morning. It was lying across the walk on the east side of the building, his head and body bruised by his fatal plunge. He had apparently been dead several hours. So far as known there was but one witness to the tragedy, Perry Parker, another inmate of the institution, states that during the night he heard Hale open his window and saw him crawl out on an adjoining roof. Thoroughly frightened Parker crawled back to bed and did not report the incident… Hale formerly resided at Covert but had been an inmate of the infirmary for several years. He was a victim of epilepsy and it is believed he suffered an attack after retiring to his room Sunday night. In the delirium following the attack he is thought to have crawled through the window to an adjoining roof and plunged to the ground below. Dorf Hale of Covert, a brother of the dead man, came to the infirmary Monday and took the body to Covert for burial.

John Wilbur Hale was born in February 1853 UN14 or about 1853 UN11, UN12, UN13, UN15 in Henrietta, Lorain County MI23 Ohio UN11, UN12, UN13. As Wilber Hale, he was a boarder and a servant in the household of Charles and Mary Burton in Covert Township, Van Buren County, Michigan in 1880 UN13. He married Eva Rosetta Safford in Covert Township, Michigan on June 20, 1880 MI23. At the time of their marriage, both parties lived in Paulville, which was the previous name of Palisades Park located on Lake Michigan in Covert Township RO28. Wilber and Eva Hale and their children, Jesse, Ellen J., Roy, Ida, and twins Esther and Chester, lived in Covert Township with Wilber’s brother, Adolphus, in 1900 UN14. Three of these children were removed from their custody on July 25, 1901 CO41:

…upon complaint of County Agent Crago, Wilbur Hale and wife of Covert, were arrested upon a charge of drunkenness and being persons of scandalous and notorious characters, the object of the arrest being to get possession of their children… Hale and wife did not wish to stand trial but consented to release the children, the county taking three, Ella, aged 11, Ray [sic] aged 10 and Ida, aged 7. A pair of twins aged 3 was left with the parents upon condition that the parents reform and that they provide a suitable home for the children, which they have not done in the past. Mr. Crago brought the children home with him and will place them in the school at Coldwater.

In 1910, “William” and Eva Hale were enumerated in Covert Township with their children, Esther, Chester, and Levi, and Wilbur’s brother, Adolph UN15. The Van Buren County, Michigan death certificate for John Wilbur Hale stated that he was born on February 2, 1853 in Ohio to Levi Hale and Polly Coats and died on August 18, 1924 in Bangor Township from arteriosclerosis MI21.
