James Davis was born about the year 1736 US11. According to a copy of a marriage record for his son (Jessee Davis) in the records of the Center Monthly Meeting in Guilford County, North Carolina, James Davis married Patience Miller and was the father of Jessee Davis US11. The records of the Holy Trinity Old Swedes Church in Wilmington, Delaware, state that James Davis married Patience Bishop on May 30, 1754 BU8. James Davis of Randolph County, North Carolina wrote his will on August 16, 1800 NO16:

Whereas I James Davis of the County of Randolph State of N. Carolina being weak of body but of sound mind do think proper this sixteenth day of August in the Year 1800 to make the follow distribution of what property I am blessd with -

and first my Will is that all my Just debts be paid

James Davis died at about age sixty-nine years on March 15, 1805; the records of the Center Monthly Meeting in Guilford County, North Carolina state “James Davis one of the early setlers in Randolph County North Carolina Died the 15th of the 3rd month 1805 and was buried on his own premises aged about 69 years” US11.

Patience Miller (Robert, Ruth), the daughter of Robert and Ruth Miller of East Caln, was born on the 20th day of the 1st month, 1730/31, according to the records of the Bradford Monthly Meeting in Chester County, Pennsylvania US11. Patience, the wife of James Davis, was called a child of Robert Miller in a record of the inventory of Robert’s estate dated August 11, 1761 PE7. Patience Miller was called the granddaughter of Joseph Haines in his will, which was dated October 27, 1762 and in which she was given “the Sum of Ten Pounds Currant Money of Pensylvania to her and her heirs for ever” PE24. Patience, the wife of James Davis, was mentioned in the will of her mother, Ruth Miller, on May 18, 1785 PE7.

With Charles Bishop, Patience was the mother of Ruth Bishop, and with James Davis, she was the mother of Rebekah, Eve, Rachel, Jesse, and probably of Hannah, Amor, and Job Davis. Petitions to the Chester County, Pennsylvania Orphan’s Court demonstrate that Patience married Charles Bishop, with whom she was the mother of Ruth Bishop, and that Patience later was called Patiance Davis, the mother of Ruth Bishop PE7. Charles Bishop died sometime before March 12, 1753 CH21. The administration of the estate of Charles Bishop was dated April 13, 1753, in which Patience Bishop, Robert Miller, and Thomas Coates, all of Chester County in Pennsylvania, were bound for the sum of six hundred pounds and the adminstration of the estate was granted to Patience Bishop PE7. The inventory of Charles Bishop’s estate was conducted on March 22, 1753 by William Darlinton and Joseph Bishop, Jr. and was valued at over ₤155 PE7. “Patiens Bishope” was called a “relect and Wido of Charlas Bishope Desed” in a receipt dated March 12, 1753 for payment of twenty pounds “for the Remainder or Resedeu of Rent” which was due to Jeremiah Ponsel (this surname is uncertain) from Charles Bishop for the use of his mill and cow CH21. Another account of charges regarding the estate of the late Charles Bishop, of which Patience (Bishop) Davis was the administratrix, included dates ranging from April 13, 1753 (the date the administration was granted to Patience Bishop) until September 15, 1753 CH21. This document indicated that Patience had remarried; while the document itself was undated, the accomptants were James Davis and his wife, Patience Davis, who was called “late Patience Bishop” CH21.

Ruth Bishop was born sometime in or after 1748. A petition by Warrick (or Warwick) Miller (who called himself the son of Robert Miller) dated September 15, 1761 to the Orphan’s Court held at Chester for Chester County, Pennsylvania on behalf of Ruth Bishop, the minor daughter of the late Charles Bishop of West Nantmel (West Nantmeal Township) who was then under the age of fourteen, stated that Charles Bishop died intestate and Ruth required a guardian PE7. Another petition from Warrick Miller to the Chester County Orphan’s Court dated December 15, 1761 stated that George Carter had been appointed as Ruth Bishop’s guardian but that he refused guardianship; thus, Warrick Miller requested a replacement guardian PE7. Another petition from Joseph Pierce dated June 15, 1762 to the Chester County Orphan's Court stated that Joseph Pierce had been appointed as Ruth’s guardian, and “at ye. Particular Request of Patiance Davis, Mother of ye. Said Ruth Bishop”, Joseph Pierce requested that John Townsend also be appointed as a guardian for Ruth PE7.

Their second marriage intention had been declared to the Deep River meeting on the 7th day of the 2nd month, 1785 and during the following meeting held on the 7th day of the 3rd month, 1785, they were reported married US11. He appointed David Davis and Aaron Stalker as the executors of his will, which was witnessed by John Stalker and Thomas Stalker, and was proved at court in Randolph County, North Carolina in November 1834 NO16. This will was filed under the name “Amos” Davis, which is incorrect, as demonstrated by the signature of Amor Davis on his will NO16.
