Heinrich Fishel, Sr. (Johann Adam, Ursula Catherine) “Henry” was born on July 25, 1774 in York County, Pennsylvania to John Adam Fischel and Catherine Thomas Fischel, and was baptized on July 31, 1774 at the First Moravian Church in York, York County, Pennsylvania YO5. His baptismal sponsors were Michael Fischel, Henry Lanius, and John Fischel YO5. An alternate spelling of his surname was “Fischel”. In 1779 when he was five years old, his parents relocated to North Carolina RE17, YO5.

Henry was probably in North Carolina in 1810 or 1811, because his son was born there at that time, but he may not have been enumerated in North Carolina in 1810. A search of the 1810 census, regardless of state or territory, revealed a Henry Feizle from Strasburg, Shenandoah County, Virginia, Henry Fissel from Dover, York County, Pennsylvania, and Henry Fissell from Tyrone, Adams County, Pennsylvania UN6. No known man named Henry Fishel, or any reasonable variant of that name, lived in North Carolina. There were three different men with the name “Henry Fishel” who lived in Paradise, York County, Pennsylvania at the time of the 1810 census UN6. In fact, of the twelve heads of households with the Fishel surname (and its variants) who lived in York County, Pennsylvania in 1810, nine of these individuals lived in Paradise, and there were just two other men with the Fishel surname who lived in different counties in the state of Pennsylvania at that time, Henry Fissell of Tyrone, Adams County and John Fishel of Versailles, Allegheny County. Henry Fishel, the subject of this biography, may have been one of these three men from Paradise, Pennsylvania, but this would have meant that he moved from North Carolina back to Pennsylvania, where his paternal grandfather settled.

Three men named Henry Fishell were enumerated during the 1820 census who also resided with a young boy who was in the proper age range, because at that time, Henry Jr. would have been about ten years old UN7. These men lived in Rush Township in Ontario County, New York, Sugar Creek in Stark County, Ohio, and Posey in Franklin County, Indiana UN7. Another two men named Henry Fishel and Henry Fishel, Jr. lived in Washington Township, Columbiana County, Ohio who were obviously father and son, for “Henry Fishel Jr.” was listed directly below “Henry Fishel” UN7. Neither of these two Fishel men of Washington Township were the subject of this biography, because Henry Fishel could not have been called “Junior”, as his father’s name was Johann, and in this census record, the man named Henry Fishel did not have a son of about the age of ten in his household. The 1820 census which listed “Henry Fishill” in Posey, Indiana is the most likely candidate, because Posey is approximately fifty-four miles from White River, Indiana, the location where both Henry Sr. and Henry Jr. eventually settled.

Henry Fishel purchased land in Johnson County, Indiana on December 20, 1825 HO26, PR18; it is unclear if this was the same land patent mentioned in the General Land Office Records which was issued on July 10, 1826 and recorded that Henry “Fichell” purchased 53.46 acres in the west half of the northwest quarter of Section 31, Township 13 North in Johnson County, Indiana GE4. On April 17, 1833, Henry “Fishal” purchased 54.02 acres of land in Johnson County, Indiana GE4. This was the west half of the southwest quarter of Section 30, in Township 13 North GE4, which was north of Banta Creek. Other Fishel men who purchased land in Johnson County, Indiana were Henry Fishel, Jr., who purchased land on October 31, 1831, and Christian Fishel, on November 16, 1831 HO26. Henry “Fishal” purchased 54.02 acres of land in the west half of the southwest quarter of Section 30 in Township 13 North in Johnson County on April 17, 1833 GE4. On September 2, 1834, Henry purchased eighty acres of land in Johnson County, the west half of the northeast quarter of Section 22 in Township 13 North GE4, which was almost kitty-cornered from his son’s parcel of eighty acres.

He was most likely the father of Christian Fishel. Christian Fishel was born about 1806 UN11 or 1807 UN10 in North Carolina UN10, UN11. He probably married Rebecca sometime before 1840 or 1842, because the eldest child living in their household in 1850 and 1860 was Mary Fishel, born about 1840 UN10 or 1842 UN11 in Indiana UN10, UN11. A man whose name was recorded as Christian “Fisher” married Rebecca Kisling on December 20, 1840 in Johnson County, Indiana RI14. A Johnson County, Indiana marriage record dated December 19, 1840 between Christian Fishel and Rebecca Kisling may have been the date of their marriage application RI12. Christian and Rebecca, who was born in Virginia about 1816 UN11 or 1818 UN10, lived next to the households of Henry Fishel, Sr. and Henry Fishel, Jr. in White River, Johnson County, Indiana in 1850 UN10, and they lived next to Catherine Fishel and Henry Fishel in 1860 UN11.

At the time of the 1850 census, Henry was seventy-five years old, and his wife, Polly, who was born in New Jersey, was seventy-nine years old. Polly may have been the mother of Henry Fishel, Jr., but she also may have been his second (or third) wife. Catherine Fishel, a woman of forty, resided with Henry and Polly; she was born in North Carolina, as was Henry’s son, Henry Jr., who lived next to his father and was thirty-nine in 1850 UN10. Catherine Fishel may have been a daughter-in-law to Henry Fishel, Sr., because had she been Henry’s daughter, her surname would not have been “Fishel”, unless she never married. A boy of the age of twelve, Jonah Fishel, who was probably Catherine’s son, also lived in the household UN10.

“Henry Fischel” was mentioned in a letter written on February 14, 1851 by Charles Barstow, a Moravian missionary, to the Corresponding Secretary of the Home Mission Society; the relevant details have been reproduced MO4:

I have… preached eight times in the following places… twice at the Bluffs of White river (in Morgan county), at the house of Henry Fischel, who, as well as br. [brother] Chas. Spach, was formerly a member of our church in North Carolina. Br. Fischel, together with his wife and two sons, Henry and Christian Fischel, expressed a desire that I should repeat my visits as often as practicable and that we might form a society there.

Henry Fishel, Sr. probably died before 1860 in Johnson County, Indiana.

·       1820 US Census: he probably lived in Posey, Franklin County, Indiana with two boys under ten, two boys and one girl between ten and fifteen, and one woman who was forty-five or older.

·       1830 US Census: lived in White River, Johnson County, Indiana with two men and one woman between the ages of twenty and thirty and one woman between the ages of fifty and sixty.

·     1840 US Census: lived in White River, Johnson County, Indiana with one boy under five years old, one man and one woman, both between thirty and thirty-nine, and one woman between sixty and sixty-nine. This was clearly a multi-generational family.

·         1850 US Census: lived in White River, Johnson County, Indiana.
